They could probably get away with just 15 / 15 Pro / 15 Ultra. I wonder if the 14 Plus sales are worse than the 13 mini.
They are due to how close the price of the 14 Plus is to 14 Pro (and 13 Pro, which might be cheaper than 14 Plus in some areas)

Apple is competing with itself and canabalising its own sales by creating too many "steps" on the value ladder and only having $100 between every "step".

Apple is reportedly "seriously" concerned over the sales performance of the iPhone 14 Plus, the 6.7-inch non-Pro variant of the iPhone 14 lineup. As a result, it is considering ways to restrategize its iPhone lineup for next year.

iphone-14-lineup.jpg

The iPhone 14 Plus is the newest addition to the iPhone lineup and replaces the 5.4-inch mini iPhone. The iPhone 14 Plus features the same design, cameras, and performance as the standard iPhone 14 but with a larger display and battery. According to a post by yeux1122 on Naver, who has shared both accurate and inaccurate information in the past, Apple is thinking of ways to reevaluate how it treats pro and non-pro iPhones for the iPhone 15.

The post outlines two possible strategies reportedly under consideration at Apple, with the first being to further differentiate the pro and non-pro iPhones, which was previously rumored by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Secondly, Apple is considering reducing the price of the Plus model of the lineup, which starts at $899, according to the post, which cites supply chain and industry sources. A price reduction of the Plus model means the standard ‌iPhone‌, which starts at $799, could also see a price decrease unless Apple wants to shrink the pricing gap between the two models.

In the last few years, Apple has shifted and reevaluated its iPhone lineup a few times. Starting with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple began offering small and large-sized iPhones before branching out and offering four models, two standard and two high-end models, with different materials, colors, and camera features. Starting with the iPhone 13 Pro, for example, Apple began to offer the same camera systems on the 6.1-inch Pro and 6.7-inch Pro Max model, unlike in previous years where more advanced camera features were reserved for only the largest iPhone.

With the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, Apple chose to offer two standard and two high-end models with matching sizes: two 6.1-inch models and two 6.7-inch models. Both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature the same cameras and designs, the only difference being a physically bigger battery in the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 15 is still a year away, so it's too early to know what strategy Apple will use. In one sign, however, that it's looking to unify the entire lineup, Dynamic Island is expected to come to all iPhone 15 models. What do you think about this lineup trend for all their products?

Air, Pro, Ultra —> only difference between them size of screen and battery and of the weight of the device.

1- iPhone Air 2023 5.4” same hardware and features as the pro except of course the battery so lighter for those who feed up with the heavy smartphone wave

2- iPhone Pro 2023, 6.1” all the pro feature but being actually the regular iPhone no more cutting down on the quality as people want the best)

3- iPhone Ultra 2023, 6.7” same as the pro excepted the battery

1- iPad Air 2023 8.9”

2- iPad Pro 2023 11.9”

3- IPad Ultra 2023 12.9”

All the same features as the Pro except battery and screen size

1- Apple Watch Air 2023 41mm

2- Apple Watch Pro 2023 45mm

3- Apple Watch Ultra 2023 49mm

1- MacBook Air 2023 13.3”

2- MacBook Pro 2023 14.2”

3- MacBook Ultra 2023 16.2”

All the same features as the Pro except battery and screen size

The same pattern for the rest of the products like Macs and the Displays (24”, 27”, 32” all max refresh rates and and technology)

Agreed, Apple really needs to do some spring cleaning this year. An iPhone 15 mini, normal and "max" would be enough.

If the mini can't hit a decent price point, I guess the SE can live on as well.

I think we're at a point now where we have too much choice, and people just can't be bothered anymore.

14 Pro and 13 Pro are just too high value per dollar to justify getting a 14 Plus.

14 Plus and 13 Pro come in at the same price right now -Why chose the one with dual cameras and no ProMotion display? For a battery and display that's bigger?

14 Plus is a mid-tier iPhone with almost-Pro pricing.

Who's paying almost $999 for a mid-tier iPhone when you can get an iPhone Pro for $999?

A few people have said it and I’ll echo the same. A smaller iPhone is necessary whether on a yearly cycle or every other year. The name “mini” doesn’t sit well with people, it’s not flattering. Call it the iPhone Air instead focusing on lightness and usability. In a dream scenario, I’d have a small pro model but the likelihood of that is zero.

Apple should consider bringing back the iPhone Mini with better battery life, camera, and so on. Call it the iPhone Pro Mini.

Also, the non-pro iPhones should strictly be reserved for the Apple event in the Spring.
I would like an iPhone Air. I dont need the most awesome of everything but would still like a premium much lighter device.

This is a good idea and fits in with the rest of the Apple lineup.

iPhone Air sounds more intriguing, and could be marketed as a new premium product rather than simply a Mini-sized flagship iPhone.

They could even price it at between $749-$779, especially if they could figure out a unique ‘Air’ feature.

I'm not saying this applies to everyone but the way I see it the problem is the features and price. If I go try and buy the 14 Plus, and then see the 14 Pro price, I'd say "man, for $100 I get all these features, but I like the big screen, crap I'll just get the Pro Max". OR, I say "Man, I like the size but I like the Pro features but not for that price, I'll just wait for the 15 Plus and it will have the pro features" and I hold on to my working phone for another year.

In both of these scenarios the iPhone 14 plus lost, the regular iPhone 14 though if someone doesn't want the big screen and they don't want to spend extra $200 for pro features, they'll jump on it.

Apple needs to stop trying to milk its fanbase - just give us a really decent iPhone 15, not Pro, not Plus, not Mini or anything else - hark back to the days of Steve Jobs - there was just one iPhone (okay already it had differing storage options...)
When are loyal iPhone users, going to start demanding more than an increase in camera tweaks, different colors, and a larger capacity? Apple USED to be about innovation. Now they are hedging on the buildup to a new release to drive sales. It is getting old. I have had a new iPhone from DAY 1 AT EVERY RELEASE. Now I am starting to pray for a new option outside of Apple (NOT Android) to make me feel valued instead of feeling raped.

Apple has struggled with its iPhone sales since it moved to a 4 model lineup, the Mini failed in their eyes and now the Plus is failing.
Perhaps like the butterfly keyboard they need to admit they screwed up and move on. It would be interesting to know if the 6.1” Pro outsells the Max. Because we know the none Pro 6.1” is the best seller practically.

Just drop the "Pro" name and go back to releasing only 2 phones a year instead of 4. The 14 and 14 Plus are so similar to the 13 Pro and 13 Pro max that it's completely redundant to even exist. Just let last year's model fill that cheaper price point and only release the Pro models each year but without the Pro name. It's getting ridiculous and stupid with so many unnecessary models.

iPhone Air - $799
Light, portable, add a unique feature.
iPhone - $829
The ideal iPhone for everyone.
iPhone Pro $999
The best high-tech value.
iPhone Ultra - $1199
Cutting-edge features.

Maybe even add back an iPhone Pro Max at $1099, but that’s a mouthful compared to the above. A 5.4” iPhone Pro could be intriguing, but would similarly make the lineup too convoluted.

After I got my iPhone 1, I would upgrade to the next version when it came out. Eventually, I would upgrade at the introduction of every other model. Now, I'm still on my iPhone 12 Pro. With every iPhone roll out, we get diminishing returns. The new features don't justify getting a new phone. At this point, I feel like I'm waiting for my 12's battery or external speakers to die.

Whole Apple line up too complex.

Should be easier to find what you need.

iPhone
iPhone Pro
iPhone Pro Max

MacBook (which is the current Air)
MacBook Pro 14
MacBook Pro 16

Mac (replaces Mac mini but in a keyboard form factor like Apple II)
iMac
Mac Studio
Mac Pro

iPad (which is the current iPad Air)
iPad mini
iPad Pro 11
iPad Pro 12

Done.

I go full Gorden Ramsey on the menu.

I got rid of the iPhone Plus and I renamed the two Air products, got rid of MacBook Pro 13, and got rid of the out of date tapered iPad design. I get rid of all this SE models.
This is very similar to how I think they should restructure their entire lineup as well, I too think they should drop the "Air" name from those products as it doesn't even make sense anymore. But I think the Apple Watch lineup is the way they should do every product. Just have 3 tiers for each product, a Premium (Pro), a Standard, and a Cheap (SE) model, but I think a few screen size variations within a tier is fine, but I think that would make things much simpler and easier to understand. It's already so close to having that but just so messy that it's frustrating, the iPad probably needs the most clean-up, followed closely by the iPhone.

The problem of iphone plus is not the size, it's the price too damn expensive while giving you last year CPU.

People will get the 14 Pro model if they want the greatest and the latest. For budget user who just want to buy an iphone, that will be last year iphone 13 Pro/iphone 13 but not iphone 14 (all same CPU)

Stop using older technology on a new iphone series, please. If you want to recycle your crap, just leave last year model in the line up and sell at a cheaper price. Giving the new phone with a new name while using older CPU is just plain stupid. That alone deserve bad sales.

The Pixel 4a is like the Mini. It has a 5.8" screen and you can still find them new on Ebay. I owned a Pixel 4a and sold it to Google because they gave me 90% of my trade in value after 2 years. I loved that phone.
The Pixel 4a is much larger than the mini, even larger than the SE2, and almost as large as the regular iPhone.

From largest to smallest, 4A, SE, mini:

This 15 Ultra is really a thing? (rumor wise, yes, I realize) - Will it offer a holographic interface ala Minority Report or a Siri with ChatGPT levels of response? Because doesn't the current lineup offer enough already and its getting harder to differentiate between them beyond colors?

I never got the purpose of the 14 Plus. I understand price point view, but here's how I looked at it. If it was about saving $100-$200 dollars, the carriers offer BOGO, free phones, or 24-36 month payment plans and you can get an iPhone with no job through them in the right circumstances. People who have families with multiple phones seem to have a system where an older phone moves to someone else when the new phone is purchased - people are rarely replacing 3+ phones at the same time (I said rarely). The $100-$200 difference wasn't the showstopper it may have once been. Made more sense to just get the Pro Max, plus the PM was available sooner.

All that said, Apple has a better view of their market and their current roadmap. Hope whatever they are looking to accomplish in the long term makes these current steps make more sense at some point.

That's what happens when your CEO is clueless and more about sales and less about the customer and how they will respond. Cook wants to squeeze every penny out of the devices and has diluted the lineup so much it makes it confusing for people who aren't tech savy. The 14 line was about worthless when the 13 pro can be found for cheaper and is the better overall device. Them putting last years chip in a new model and thinking it is going to fly off the shelves just because it has the apple logo on it isn't gonna cut it anymore.

Go back to 2 sizes for the phones and make the battery and screen the differentiating factors. Not everyone wants a tablet in their hands and shouldn't lose out on features that have 0 to do with a larger screen size just because apple wants to sell more expensive devices.

One iPhone with three cameras in four sizes: 5” iPhone mini (smaller than 13 mini; think “actually mini”), 5.6” iPhone (slightly bigger than 13 mini; toward normal sized), 6.2” iPhone Plus (slightly bigger than iPhone 14; plus size), 6.8” iPhone Max (a true phablet sized iPhone). All fullscreen. No pro branding. No iPhone numbered marketing. Clean and simple premium iPhones in a range of accessible sizes, five colours options and four storage choices: 128/256/512/1TB with USB-4. Add five additional colours (total of 10 colours) after twelve months. Update phone every two years.

Combine that we two budget iPhones with home buttons in the style of SE1 squared-off design. 4” and 5” choices in 128 and 256 storage sizes. Available in black or white. One rear camera. Regular LED display.

Ideal iPhone lineup then:
One premium full-screen iPhone with three rear cameras and OLED display in four screen sizes. And a budget common sense down to earth iPhone SE in two screen sizes. Get rid of everything else.

Sell a pricey iPhone with nearly no improvement over it s predecessor and than Apple is stunned that it doesn‘t sell like hot cake? This baffles me.

People wait for a serious update, containing at least USB-C and no one wants to buy a notch anymore and waits for the upgraded version with the pill shaped cutout.

The revenge of the mini.

Seriously though it's not hard to see the issue here and it's pricing. Anyone who's interested in a 15 Plus will look at the price and see that it isn't much more to get a Pro. Or they could save with a regular 15. The Plus just isn't offering enough to justify to cost.

So is the Plus even necessary? I think it is but price needs to be brought down. It would also be interesting to look at releasing the regular iPhones separately to the Pro line up to generate some hype around them and help spread sales over the year. Say regular iPhones moved to a March release date and the Pros September. Launching both lines at the same time means the regular iPhones just don't get much attention. The iPhone mini could also replace the SE with updates at irregular intervals similar to what they do with the iPad mini.

Here's my lineup:

$499 - iPhone mini (replacing the SE)

$699 - iPhone
$799 - iPhone Plus

$999 - iPhone Pro
$1099 - iPhone Pro Max
