Go back to the days of 6 and 6 Plus and run a similar play. Two models, 6.1”/6.7” no differences other than screen size. Exact same specs between the two. Premium materials, top tier specs. Keep the last years models for the cheaper price points.

we didn't start hearing about how disappointing the sales were on the mini's until what, March? and this isn't even the first story about the plus flopping, clearly more people want small phones than focus groups will show, but also, Google (or HTC, or LG) would love to do what apple considers "disappointing" sales

There is nothing wrong with the 14 plus. Not every one wants or needs the pro features. I only brought the pro because the plus was released 6 weeks after the pro and I didn’t want to wait. Staggering the release dates has impacted sales.
What's funny is they used to sell us the "Pro features" as standard features until they realized they could charge more for them in a premium lineup. There's a reason no one felt compelled to upgrade a phone for 3-4 years except for the bleeding edge tech nerds because phone tech was advacing so rapidly. Mobile tech has plateaued, there's no reason we can't put the best features in all of the devices at this point.

For years, Foxconn has been the exclusive assembler of the iPhone Pro line. With the upcoming generation, TrendForce reports indicate that the iPhone 15 Pro Max – or iPhone 15 Ultra – will also be assembled by Luxshare.

Before that, Apple will likely ask Luxshare – or another of its manufacturers – to produce some of the iPhone 14 Pro models to ensure it can meet the standards the Cupertino firm expects. That said, TrendForce says that Apple wants an alternative to assembling its most-demanded phone without changing the country, as Luxhares only produces Apple-related accessories in Vietnam, and its iPhone factory is located in China.

This report also shows the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak in the Zhengzhou plant, as the estimated shipments of iPhone 14 devices in 2022 have been lowered to 78.1 million units. Previously, it was expected that Apple would ship around 80-85 million units this year. TrendForce expectations are still better than the ones shared by Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple analyst expects about 70-75 million iPhones to be shipped during 2022.

Thats a noticeable decline in iPhone 14 sales.

Agree but add a smaller phone in that lineup as well.

At 899 it was massively overpriced. The android competition (pixel series) blew it apart spec wise, and for anyone firmly in apple land , the other options available were better.

iPhones are turning into very pricey items these days and little improvement year over year to warrant trading up unless your phone is like over 3 years old.

Come on iPhone 15 Pro Mini, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Us nerds on this forum who love the mini would yes. But most people won’t.

Hopefully though this means they’ll reassess the mini form factor and maybe make even a standard iPhone again or a SE. For me any mini is better than none.

No high refresh rate screens, last years processor, no dynamic island and they’re surprised people already ponying up for a near $1000 phone are just going for an extra $200 to get the Pro?

I skipped the Plus almost solely because it had a 60hz screen. Also I’d be losing the 2x zoom from my old 7 Plus. The silliest move they’ve made is making the wide angle lens the one included in the base model iPhones.

Should have made an SE Plus with the design of the 8 Plus for an extra hundred and it would have sold like hotcakes.
I wanted a much bigger screen and went from the SE2 to the 14 Plus, and I'm delighted with it. I couldn't care less about the extra features in the Pro - I don't need any of them. As for the higher refresh rate, I'd much rather have the extra battery life.

They do need to keep smaller models for people who want them, though. It would have been good to have kept the Mini around.

And even with the good carrier trades, they keep stretching out the terms, so it's barely worth it to pay the device off and do the deal. Problem is the plans for the manufacturers are different than the carriers. Apple wants you to upgrade as often as possible, but carriers just want to find ways to lock you to them

Too many model variations for a yearly release. Apple just needs 3 phone models. Personally I think all phone makers should be on a 2yr cycle this 1yr cycle. Not enough time to innovate

Yea they delay the + to nudge people to Pros and then wonder why no +s sell

hark back to the days of Steve Jobs - there was just one iPhone
One iPhone… in a market frequently demanding different things.
It would be a terrible mistake to go back to that.
Even Steve eventually learned that diversity in a product line was a good strategy with the Mac and the iPod.

The reason is simply 1 year is not enough for car companies to develop a new engine. Engine development take time and car renewal cycles are not yearly.

There is also no yearly need for a new car engine since you are limited at how much speed you can drive safely, unlike phone chips where you get new app use every year that requires a more powerful chip. A phone you buy in the summer of 2023 and plan to keep for 3-4 years should not have a chip from 2021.
Yeah that’s correct. My point exactly. You often buy a new car with an old engine. They are not updated yearly.

The chip on the other hand. Most would not realise what chip was in their phone and a chip 2-3 years old would not negatively impact the average user. Yes they should use the current one but if using a 1 year old chip keeps the price down the average user would be happy.

They can’t be that surprise, that the 14 doesn’t sell, when it is a 13 with no notch.
The 13 Pro is better and cheaper

Maybe you are in the EU, I’m not sure?

I am not yet fully convinced that it’s coming for sure to the US models
Apple’s desire for nickel and diming (mFI license revenue) and being petty are always surprising to me.
As every time anyone mentions this: mFI revenue is nothing in Apple’s total revenue. Obviously, selling more smartphones because USB-C is an upside would exceed the lost revenue for mFI. The real reason is that probably Apple thinks it’s a net negative (more customers would be annoyed because of USB-C than happy, so fewer sales).

Whole Apple line up too complex.

Should be easier to find what you need.

iPhone
iPhone Pro
iPhone Pro Max

MacBook (which is the current Air)
MacBook Pro 14
MacBook Pro 16

Mac (replaces Mac mini but in a keyboard form factor like Apple II)
iMac
Mac Studio
Mac Pro

iPad (which is the current iPad Air)
iPad mini
iPad Pro 11
iPad Pro 12

Done.

I go full Gorden Ramsey on the menu.

I got rid of the iPhone Plus and I renamed the two Air products, got rid of MacBook Pro 13, and got rid of the out of date tapered iPad design. I get rid of all this SE models.
Terrible.
The budget$329 iPad is literally the best selling model. Discontinuing it for something closer to the iPad Air would be absolutely ridiculous.
The MacBook Air is Apple’s best selling Mac, and also a very recognizable name. “MacBook” might be more elegant, but it’s not as recognizable and it’s slightly more confusing for average consumers.
“Oh you want a MacBook?”
“Not that MacBook.”
Well that’s the MacBook.”
“Well I want the other MacBook.”
Choosing between “Air” or “Pro” is way easier. Plus Apple has tried the “MacBook” name twice, and both times it was completely cannibalized by the Air for plenty of reasons, branding being one of the biggest ones.
Redesigning the Mac mini is literally pointless and would do nothing except annoy people who actually use them for rack mounted servers and such.
Discontinuing both the Apple Watch SE and the iPhone SE is basically shooting Apple in the face.
Both are amazing gateway products into the Apple ecosystem, thats the point.
Cutting off those devices, and any customers who might have purchased them is literally the worst possible decision for trying to hook customers in to services in the future.
I think Apple’s line-ups could definitely use some clean-up don’t get me wrong, but just discontinuing products to discontinue products isn’t it.

To be honest, I’m also surprised. The problem with the mini is that no one wanted a small phone. And with the Plus, Apple (and me, and I’d say most people) probably overestimated the market window for a big phone which is already expensive but not top-notch. I’d say a single default phone (no mini or Plus) + Pro/Pro Max seems to be the most optimal structure for Apple. Lowering the price of the 15 Plus would hurt them in two ways: considerable gap with Pro Max and lowering the price of the standard 15. So I see two realistic outcomes:
  • Apple removes the 15 Plus, maintains prices for the rest of the lineup, and maybe try to get into the “cheap big phone” market with the next SE.
  • Since it’s likely that Apple will increase prices for the hypothetical 15 Ultra, they could maintain pricing for the 15, 15 Plus and 15 Pro, so the 15 Plus would seem like a better deal, and the upsell gap would be way higher.
