"All the campaigns against leather are some of the more idiotic manifestations of animal care and eco-consciousness.
Firstly, cattle hide is a waste product. No one raises cattle for their hides, and they are only processed after slaughter for meat.
Secondly, leather is one of the better biodegradable materials (of the sustainable ones). Even leather chemically tanned with chromium salts performs much better than plastics.
Replacing leather with leather-like products is utter nonsense. All vegan, vegetable, etc. leathers are simply plastic - mostly polyurethane with additives (usually PU is more than 70%). Advertising something like this as an eco-friendly material should be banned. Already pure plastic is more eco-friendly because it can be recycled - the "plant-based" ones are usually only suitable for incineration.
Any claim that moving away from hides saves CO2 is just plain rubbish. Leftover hides from meat production have to be disposed of anyway - leather goods/accessories are straightforwardly reprocessed waste.
Of course, the above does not apply to fur, nor to exotic skins, where one actually breeds animals intentionally."
