I have been using an ESR clear case since October 2023 and while it is not a “piss colour” as yet, it is steadily moving in that direction and should hit the mark some time this summer, once it gets more sun on it. 😋

In my experience with clear cases, the harder plastic they use, the slower they yellow, yet then they are also really tricky to take off. Apple’s MagSafe clear case is the worst of the bunch, IMO, as it is quite hard, leaves the iPhone bottom exposed and still yellows, albeit slower than some other cases.
If you wait long enough it will turn different shades of Sweet Tea, just like my clear Pelican case; the soft rubber bits have discolored but the hard plastic back is still nice and clear tho.

Hear me out: maybe they could license MB-Tex or one of the other convincing, durable fake leathers that European car manufacturers use.

There are TWO and ONLY TWO materials that are acceptable for car seats. Those are real leather, and high quality cloth. Sadly, nobody is selling cars with high quality cloth seats any more, at least outside of Japan. They used to be everywhere, but the last car I had with them was a '95 Chevy Tahoe. Probably the nicest seats I ever had were in my '83 Toyota Cressida.

The pleather/naugahyde/call it what it really is vinyl seats they're putting in cars now are absolutely horrible.

I have one of the less than $15 silicone cases from Amazon on my $1000+ phone and guess what...it has survived multiple corner and face drops without any issues. Been using them on my iPhones for at least 10 years.
That's fine, you do you and I will do me.

I don't get why people use a case at all. Like buying a car & wrapping it up in moving blankets every time you drive it.
Because my phone is too slippery. If I didn’t have a case I’d be dropping it at least once a week. The titanium is nice and all, but when it comes down to it I don’t sit and stare at the materials of my phone all day; it sits in my pocket 90% of the time and I’m looking at the screen the rest of the time. If a case makes it grippier and saves me the downtime of replacing the screen due to a drop it’s absolutely worth it.

Not a lot of people in the forums who have been complaining seem to be actual owners of the product, based on what they say. So it seems to me that the energy behind the topic is coming from somewhere other than actual owned experience.

If you read the comments, many of the complaints were always less about fit, finish and quality of the product than they were about their sentiment that Apple is "greenwashing," a hot-button issue for people who disagree with some politics and accuse apple of "virtue-signaling" at every opportunity.

I'm not saying that's where all the complaints are coming from, as there have been actual customers complaining about the material (as well as there have been people who are entirely satisfied with the product), including the same photos from the same source that have been reposted here many times. It just seems to me that the anger about this product is related to more than the product itself.

Finewoven is made from polyester which is made from oil. It’s even worse than leather! Think of all the dinosaurs that had to die… and they’re an endangered species too. /s

Still don't get it why people don't just buy a $10 cover from a third party that lasts the entire lifespan of the phone. Is the Apple logo on the back of the case that important?
Back in the day, I did have a genuine Apple leather case for my iPhone XS and it felt great. Really good quality, and I got it on sale (although still not worth 3x the price.)

Apple has stopped production of FineWoven accessories, according to the Apple leaker and prototype collector known as "Kosutami."

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kosutami explained that Apple has stopped production of FineWoven accessories due to its poor durability. The company may move to another non-leather material for its premium accessories in the future.

Kosutami has revealed accurate information about FineWoven accessories in the past. The leaker unveiled Apple's plans to introduce new Apple Watch bands made of a "woven fabric material" over a month before they debuted, as well as matching iPhone cases. Kosutami also revealed the very first images of FineWoven accessories shortly before the event in which they were officially announced. MacRumors understands the source of this latest information regarding the cessation of production to be the same as these previous FineWoven rumors that were ultimately accurate, so it should be taken seriously until we know more.

Apple stopped selling leather accessories in September last year, replacing them with a more environmentally friendly "FineWoven" material that the company describes as "luxurious and durable microtwill" made from 68% post-consumer recycled polyester. FineWoven iPhone cases are priced at $59, MagSafe Wallets at $59, AirTag holders at $35, and Apple Watch bands at $99.

Accessories made of the material have been very poorly received by customers, citing poor durability and disappointing quality. FineWoven accessories in new color options were noticeably absent from Apple's spring refresh. If Apple has indeed stopped production of FineWoven accessories, it may be some time before the company's existing stock inventory begins to noticeably deplete.

that was quick

Didn't stop an early Apple from sending $27 million in new Lisas to the landfill (which was a remarkable product, just too ridiculously expensive).

Thanks for the link.

I saw an article on Tim, who had been hired to dump Macs which were 'leftovers', back in 1998 or something. Can't find anything on that, unfortunately. Could it be that Tim/Apple has all those publications removed from the Internet?

Sometimes it’s just convenience for people. You are at the store buying a phone and buy a case for it while you’re there.

Well, prematurely wearing synthetic cases are bad for the environment, and FW will probably be replaced with a different material, hopefully one which isn't synthetic, so I'm curious how you drew that conclusion.
That’s a question for Apple

Had one of these iPhone cases and it didnt last very long. Also made the phone more slippery than without even having a case at all.

While I would agree with you that a lot of the complaints on these forums are of the "Apple woke" variety (and it's like, wow, you think vegans are annoying, that's so original, tell me about your interesting personality), Apple is not going to cancel a product line just because people are complaining about "virtue signaling". They obviously aren't satisfied with the quality.
