That's a bit different because PC prices are going down. Like I said, what makes this situation so similar to the oil companies is that Apple has announced record profits while increasing the prices on their machines during an economic crisis.

Well, its not really a great comparison seeing as you can shop around for a computer while prices in Big Oil are generally very very very similar.

I guess you didn't read in the report where it says their average selling price for Macs decreased.

I am surprised there hasn't been a backlash similar to the one when oil companies boasted about record profits during the worst part of the economic crisis while in the mean time, the gas prices were off the charts.

That is a difference between oil and computers. If you don't paying for Apple computers you could get a Dell or an HP or build one yourself. If you don't like paying for oil you could ...

Besides, the government is not funneling billions of dollars to Apple.

The gross margins were awesome. Roughly twice those of Dell. That cushion is what allows Apple to keep designing insanely great products.

All these netbook haters dont buy a netbook when apple comes out with a netbook. I think you guys dont like netbooks because apple dont have one yet. Thats so biased.

Yup, clearly everyone on these forums suckle at the teat of apple and are just mad that apple hasnt released a 9" screen with a cramped keyboard

I just hate netbooks in general, in the sense that I'd never want one at all, i dont have a problem if others want to use them.

What exactly is your reasoning behind the underlined statement?

App store with over 35 000 and 1 billionth download coming in a few hours. Apple has really revolutionized the mobile space with the App Stor on the phone which is why we seeing so many other app stores from other companies. I was suprised to see a lady in her 60s in the Apple Store today asking that the app store wasn't connecting properly on her ipod touch, she was really excited about the apps, well done Apple, its things like this we like to see.

But you can't shop around for OS X machines.

Who is forcing you to buy an OSX machine?

Thats like saying, "you cant shop around for a ferrari (they are sold exclusively right?)".

You dont NEED OSX, you want it.

edit: @ goona, and yet we see people complaining about lack of innovation......

That simply means they are moving more of their lower end product than the higher prices, so called, Pro models.

Yeah but they never actually increased prices, they even started offering a laptop under a thousand dollars.

Oh the irony... - Software is the key ingredient for a great mobile experience.

But for the persistence of the iPhone Dev Team and other jailbreakers and unofficially apps makers there would be no App Store and no App Store means fewer iPhone sales. Few iPhone sales means Apple profits would have been less than stellar the past few quarters. Apple owes them some gratitude for not playing by Apple's rules.

As for Mac sales. Apple blames pro sales on the economy. Maybe, but more likely is that the new Mac Pros are even more expensive than usual. I'm sure they sell a few more Mac Book Pros too if they offered a matte screen option.

I love Apple, but sometimes they are too smart for their own good. There are times when consumers will adapt such as switching the iPod from FW to USB2, and then there are times when you have to give consumer options...like matte screens.

Some people need a Mac to run OS X only software. I mean no ones forcing people to buy gas either. They could just walk or ride a bike. Because common consensus here seems to be that when it comes to OS performance

PC = walking
Mac = Car

Plenty of users here can go on how their workflows are so deeply entrenched with their software under OS X. Please don't tell someone that is making their livelihood to just go use Windows.

I also started to think, what type of backlash can Apple have?
Well... there could be sudden iPod/iPhone fatigue, which has nothing to do with the quality of the products, just that people sometimes get tired of things that everyone has. Like, I dunno, the Walkman.

As for Macs, I can't think of any major potential backlash there... unless they run into a huge dip in quality (Chinese goods can be a little screwy). People hold Apple's stuff to higher standards due to the premium pricing and scrutinize every nook and cranny for faults, so there is much less tolerance for goofups there than if, say, Acer would have major quality issues with some netbook model.

Even more ironic is the fact that Steve started out the Mac with a group of people that called themselves "Pirates or hackers" Life has it good turn arounds, eh?

People never got tired of the Walkman, Sony just failed to transition to digital music and left room for Apple to sneak in.

Sony is dead. They failed the transition to digital music and left the door open to Apple. They failed the transition to next gen consoles and left the door open to Microsoft and Nintendo. Now they will be stuck playing catch up.

And who was it that choose to buy into the OSX world? (assuming that they werent forced by their business, unlikely given windows dominance in the professional world).

Apple has always been about locking in users to some extent, if you couldnt see that when you bought into it, im truly sorry.

Well, you do the math... in 2005 they had a 29% gross margin, a net profit of 9%, which leaves 20% having been spent on operating costs. They spend 4% on R&D (circa $500 million in 2005), so that's 16% left (in other words not far from Dell's entire gross margin). So unless Apple has the highest paid employees in the world, there is ample room for filthy amounts of advertising costs.

Well, why don't YOU do the math with ALL the associated costs? Where did you get the idea that R&D is the only cost? Your comments betray a lack of knowledge of the business world.

Not the Walkman brand in general, I'm talking about the cassette Walkmans from the early 80's, long before the mp3 days. I was in high school at the time so I remember the rise and fall of the Walkman (not to mention Nintendo Game & Watch or Rubik's Cube) very well. One day it was like someone had flicked a switch and the Walkman fad was gone in a puff of smoke.
Well, why don't YOU do the math with ALL the associated costs? Where did you get the idea that R&D is the only cost?
Where did YOU get the idea that I said anything of the sort? I said right there in the snippet you quoted that they spend 4% of their revenue on R&D, so how could I possibly also have said that it's the only cost?

No one forced people to buy into the automotive world either. They should have just stuck to using PCs ( walking/riding bikes in my analogy). They WANT gas, they don't need gas.

This in the markets where OS X is dominant. I'd love to hear Digital Skunk chime in.

This is sadly what I have to tell my switcher friends that abandon the supposedly sinking Windows ship only to have to crawl back to Windows.

Can I just ask you guys (in general) were exactly these kind of comments come from?

Sony partakes in MANY more markets than just music and consoles.

As for the "PC = walking, Mac = car" comment, come on man, really. Windows is a good operating system, the reason I dont like it at all is because I don't like the user experience. It still works well though.

Premium brands often are. It's not their customers that are short on cash or worried about the future... Porsche recently reported excellent numbers. ...

That really is true. The recession only hits some people, leaves others alone. After all 5% unemployment is "normal" and we in California are up to 11%. Sounds bad but it's only a 6% difference. 94% of the people did not see a change in status.

WalMart and Apple are both doing well and I assume the 10 zillion wallmart employees are doing fine too.
