For me as long as I like Apple's hardware and have the money for it, I don't see the reason to go buy a PC. I have the ability to run 3 different OS on machine without having to resort to hacking. Best of both worlds.

No one forced people to buy into the automotive world either. They should have just stuck to using PCs ( walking/riding bikes in my analogy). They WANT gas, they don't need gas.

Ok, eidorian made good points, but this post.....

I want to laugh, but I dont know if I should cry instead.

Not the Walkman brand in general, I'm talking about the cassette Walkmans from the early 80's, long before the mp3 days. I was in high school at the time so I remember the rise and fall of the Walkman (not to mention Nintendo Game & Watch or Rubik's Cube) very well. One day it was like someone had flicked a switch and the Walkman fad was gone in a puff of smoke.

Where did YOU get the idea that I said anything of the sort? I said right there in the snippet you quoted that they spend 4% of their revenue on R&D, so how could I possibly also have said that it's the only cost?

You said 4% for R&D + Apple employee salaries = tons left to spend on advertising. Did you mention ANY other costs before leaping to the advertising conclusion? No, you didn't. My comment stands.

I hope this puts to rest the market share issue. APPLE DOES NOT CARE.

Oh it deffinatly will, until this thread is no longer on page 1 of "new posts" then its back to business as usual with the doomsday predictions and such.

It is an internet forum after all:p

Look at it this way

Mac OS X only software = CAR
OS X = oil

PC = walking/riding bike.

Mac > PC

When you said, "you don't need OS X, you WANT it". That's obviously false since a lot of people need OSX to run their OS X only software like how people with cars need gas. Of course like you said, no one forced people into OS X, but no one forced people into cars either. In the face of it, Apple is boasting about record profit on oil when gas prices are at record high.

Bit convoluted, but I am sure you understand what I'm getting at.

I'm having some trouble with the car vs. walking analogy as well. Given my experiences I want to accept it but my mind says otherwise. I don't want to expand upon it with my own ideas either. Though the desire is great.

Probably busy in R&D at the time. I mean, there must have been a good reason for Sony to fall behind in this respect
Pride and arrogance of being at the top with the PS2 and Walkman? You'll notice this continuing trend with the PS3 and to an extent with Blu-ray.

In my personal experience Sony's quality has been going downhill since the 90's.

I mean, how can that analogy hold up if some people live 1 hour away from the place of work/study....
I don't like walking in the winter to my branch. It's only 1 mile away. ;_;

Otherwise I've never driven anywhere until the past year. I still feel that driving is a terrible vice of mine.

Admittedly a terrible set of analogies there. What is being sold at record highs right now from apple? If we are going to be talking in the realm of Apple only theres options across the board in their usual price ranges.

Edit: Lol eidorian, exactly, I kinda understand what hes trying to say, but my brain is kicking and screaming NO, NO!

Ah. Does that mean they'll stop running ads that target the competition's market share now? I could've sworn that the incessant namedropping of "Vista" had something to do with trying to steal some of the PC's marketshare, but I must have been imagining things.

Seriously. Have you never seen a keynote address where Steve Jobs marvels over the iPod's enormous market share? They're all about market share when it's big, but they pretend to be too cool to care when it's not.

Didn't the price of mini and mac pro in the latest refresh go up?

That's pretty much what being a fan of Apple is all about really. Like when they removed Firewire, everyone convinced themselves that they don't really need firewire or currently that they don't really need blu-ray. or when iphone first came out that they didn't really need copy paste, mms, sms forwarding, attaching multiple photos in an email etc.

Look at the end of the day, they care more about making money. Apple will never have more marketshare than Microsoft, never. They know this themselves which is why they are milking the segment they have and getting as much money as possible. Marketshare is irrelevant if you not making money, case in point Apple making more profit than Nokia even with less marketshare than them. As for the Vista bashing, Apple is just converting new people to Macs, they know Microsoft has the most marketshare, so they target them, its called competition, live with it.

Exactly. That's why Dell is pretty much dead after those stupid Apple-related remarks by its CEO back in the 90s...MS will follow the same path sooner than later.

And yet Dell is still being kept alive by Apple users buying their inferior monitors instead of the superior Apple ones.

Not with my money, of course...Apple-only since Apple IIGS's wonderful 13" RGB monitor...

MS IS DEAD. DELL IS DEAD.

And Blu-Ray is, INDEED, a borndead bag of hurt. Apple is wise to stay away from such a useless piece of technological crap.

Well, you have me on the mini and the pro, but who is forcing you to buy either.

Im particularly interested in your thoughts on the underlined. Do you think everyone who expresses no interest in either does simply because the almighty apple doesn't offer them? (well for FW, its one device)

I for one have never used FW (though Id love to try it out if reintroduced before i buy my first mac, the macbook). I was having a discussion with my guitar teacher in class about the new macs because he always strongly suggests macs for recording (loves garageband for hobbyist students). I mentioned that there is no FW on the macbook, and he was dissapointed but I got collective blank stares from the rest of the 24 people in the class. Anectdotal yes, but from my experiences (which by no means is an authority) it seems like most average computer users dont even know what FW is. Now do you think it is possible at ALL that those people that "convinced themselves that they dont really need firewire" actually didnt really NEED FW to the point that it would constitute them not buying the macbook? Just some food for thought.

As for Bluray, ive never given a damn about it. Ill only use it once DVD is officially dead, but to me it seems like a middle man to take up time between the DVD age and when streaming/ downloads become the main distribution method.

I am surprised there hasn't been a backlash similar to the one when oil companies boasted about record profits during the worst part of the economic crisis while in the mean time, the gas prices were off the charts.

Oil is sort of a necessity, you don't really have the choice whether to buy or not, and so become resentful when they post really high profits. Apple on the other hand make luxury products which no one has to buy. So when they make huge profits my reaction at least is well done.

Can I just ask you guys (in general) were exactly these kind of comments come from?

Sony partakes in MANY more markets than just music and consoles.

As for the "PC = walking, Mac = car" comment, come on man, really. Windows is a good operating system, the reason I dont like it at all is because I don't like the user experience. It still works well though.

Sony has lots of competition from companies like Samsung and Microsoft. The days are sony are not numbered like some think but they need a tweak on their business model to stay with the competition.
For years no body could touch Sony, remember the walkman. They came out with so many models and new products every 18 months and not one company could even come close in matching their sale numbers. yep sounds like apple today with their ipod line.
Apple needs to enjoy it now and take full advantage of today. Because they all too well know what its like to be bumped off the top of the list.
With new phone technologies in the horizons companies will start focusing on them and having products that will take advantage of the technologies.
I fore see many more itune style stores through internet stores like amazon, buy, and others where music and software can be purchased.
When these sites and equipment hit developers will be feasting on not having the stricter restrictions Apple may impose.

Like I've argued before, you can spin it so that oil or a car isn't a necessity either, or that OS X is indeed a necessity for those whose livelihood depends on it just like the car and oil.

So expect a revolt from the >8% of the market who are dependant on OSX?

I'm having trouble believe that you're the same person from your previous posts. Why the sudden change in personality and dialog?

Target Disk Mode and the sustainable, low CPU transmission bandwidth of FireWire are facts that are sadly not very well known.

Then again I can go and ask someone what USB is and get blank stares as well. It's the rectangular one right? If I can even get that answer.
