I do hope that the “explainer” in this new popup gets vetted. Otherwise, we could see a message like:

Dear User, you wouldn’t like to see you or your family get hurt, would you? Facebook will look after you. You don’t want to wake up to find a horse’s head on your pillow, do you? Allow us to take care of things.

this. But we need another alternative. Perhaps Apple should create a social network with how they view privacy and security
That is the last thing that Apple should do. That would be a huge... no make that giant target for the anti-trust brigade. then if Trumpo repeals section 230 before he is thrown into jail Apple could be in deep do-do. Tim Apple should stay the well away from the putrid sewer that is Social Media.

Apple should release iMessage and FaceTime for the web and for Android and obliterate WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger in the process. That'll teach Zuck and his cronies.

To be honest, I don't mind ads, in fact I like watching ads, but they need to be different everytime. Not the same ads over and over again. If I was looking for, say, water bottles on the web, I most likely know what I want already by searching or have even bought it, I don't need facebook to keep selling me more water bottles.

I want random ads to inspire me.

If Apple really wants to give users a “choice”, it shouldn’t be limited to advertising. Give me a choice of app stores or default messaging apps.
You already have that choice - choice of phone, operating system, messaging apps, App stores....

It's not up to Apple to give you what you want. You can always exercise your ultimate right as a consumer and go elsewhere if you can't live with the Apple ecosystem.

This will end up as a standoff between users and app developers because app developers will make it so users have to agree to allow them to be tracked if they want to use the app. No track, no use app. Question will be who will be able to hold out the longest.

Facebook's Criticism

Earlier today, in a blog post and a full-page ad published in three major newspapers, Facebook claimed that Apple's tracking change will have a "harmful impact on many small businesses that are struggling to stay afloat."
Regardless of what Apple may be doing or not, can it get more ridiculous than this? Since when Facebook became Robin Hood of small businesses?

Why would Apple or anyone do that? The whole point of a "free" social networking platform is to make obscene amounts of money tracking and selling users' data. Facebook, Twitter, Tik Tok, etc. have NO interest whatsoever is "enabling" you to communicate, express yourself, connect with family and friends, or anything else they say. The one and only reason is to monetize your data. Creating a social networking site that DOESN'T spy on you and steal your data would not be a sustainable business model (unless users paid a subscription fee, which they would not).
That's really at the heart of the matter. If your business model is reliant on your being able to monitor and track users behaviour without telling them what you're doing (or worse, allowing them to know what you're doing), by serving up advertising for other companies, and then monetise that data and sell it on to others, usually against the users wishes or best interests, not provide them with an opt out, and to factor in the fines you might get for breaching data protection or privacy legislation as a legitimate business expense, then there's something very wrong with your business model and you should probably not be doing that.
That Apple aren't going to allow them to use their platform to run their shonky business model, and to protect their users and customers from greedy, nefarious, complacent, dishonest and duplicitous outfits like Facebook is a completely obvious thing for Apple to do and no-one should be surprised that they're not going to allow it. Zuckerberg and the rest can cry all the way to bank.

Lol at Facebook pretending to care about small businesses.

They say Apple care only for profit on this issue but Facebook is complaining for the same reason. If those small businesses stop using Facebook then Zuckeberg would be losing a lot money as well.

People need to get off their high horse when complaining about Facebook and their tracking activities. Macrumours tracks your activities and there is nothing you can do about it. You either accept the cookies that track you or if you disagree you simply do not use the website. And yes, there is nothing you can do about it if Macrumours class the activity as 'Essential' because only some things in a cookie can be disabled. Anything that is classed as 'Essential' can not be disabled. I would guess that 99.9% of the websites in the internet do this, they have an 'Essential' section of a tracking cookie that cannot be disabled and as yet I do not see people complaining about Macrumours activites.

In another thread on the subject, a forum member posted a screen shot of their mobile phone showing that when conntecting to Macrumours website, there was 35 (i think it was 35) tracking instances registered by an app the member uses to see what is going on behind the scenes. So people, engage your brains properly before you spout of your tirade against Facebook and others because websites are just as bad as well.

True. Also, lol at Apple pretending to only care about users privacy. it's mainly about business for them as well. Apple gets no money out of Facebook and other social media Apps (that people and companies actually really use to survive and acquire customers globally), and wants to force IAP and subscriptions, just so they can get a heft slice for themselves.

Facebook tracks you when you're using completely unrelated sites, even when you are not a registered Facebook member.

Macrumors does not do that.

You think that do you. Maybe you should go read the sites privacy policy because if you did you would see this:
  • Data from Tracking and Ad Technologies. We collect information during and after your interaction with the Site. This is done by data collection technologies, such as web beacons and cookies. These data collection technologies allow us and the advertising networks we use on the Site to understand your activity on and off the Site. This information includes the content and ads viewed or clicked on, the frequency and duration of your activity; your navigation of the Site and other sites, and any purchases from affiliate links.

What exactly do you think 'during and after your interaction','..understand your activity on and off the site','..navigation of the site and other sites', mean???? Everything i've highighted in bold relates to a member LEAVING the site which means your activity off site is tracked and monitored by Macrumours and Macrumours 'affilate links' which by the way is something you cannot disable in the websites cookie because 'affiliate links' are classed as 'essential'. Therefore you either agree to be tracked and monitored by this website or the other alternative is not to use it, hence no tracking can take place of you.

*snip*
And you still seem to fail to understand the difference to what Facebook does: Facebook can track you even if you have never visited the site. MR might give you the choice to allow tracking or not using the site at all, Facebook does not even give you that choice.

Tesla proves you don't need to advertise.
Before the internet, blind advertising was successful; "Where's the Beef?"

Facebook needs to end, and send their employees to Tesla and Blind ad agencies.
Ads used to be far smarter and more entertaining too in those days.

Anyone who denies choice of the end user and transparency is on the wrong side of the fight.

We have CASL anti-spam laws in Canada to require consent to receive emails. Apple’s move here is on the same fundamentals of a users right to their own data.

No better way to find out who true friends really are.
I disagree here, we've been doing it completely wrong thinking that friends are best friends or not at all. Friendships are tier based starting from something like an acquaintance to a soul mate for example. I have friends that I don't talk to often or see that much for many reasons that keep us apart physically or we're just not that close but still keep in touch and support one another, Facebook was great at that.
