what if i want to join the upgrade program, can i reserve online? (i'm still under my 2 year contract from my 6 plus)
Under contract with who? Sounds like you want to join the program, so you will have to fulfill any requirements with your carrier for your 6 plus unless you were to add another line.

just tried the site and it still allows you to reserve via carrier financing. i guess if you reserve IUP, you have to pay by IUP and not pay full price to resell

Apple needs Foxconn to open more factories. The demand for the iPhone is way outstripping their capacity to supply.

Not 100% true. I reserved an AT&T 32GB Black 7 Plus this morning at 4AM MST via the iUP website. Sold my 7, went directly to Apple and they sold me the phone outright. I paid cash and threw my T-Mobile SIM in and it worked. No questions asked. Showed the rep my reservation QR code and was in and out in 15 minutes.

so essentially you're paying $400+ to rent the iphone from apple if you upgrade next year.

And what's wrong with paying $400 to rent a phone in order to get a new phone the next year? My work and personal life rely heavily on the iPhone, so yes, I would like to have the latest and greatest phone in order to stay on top of my busy life.

Also, any financial savvy person knows: lease depreciating assets, buy appreciating assets. And don't ever be foolish enough to pay cash when there's a 0% APR option available (assuming no major hit to credit). Or even better, a contractual commitment rather than a loan (carrier plans over iPhone Upgrade Program).

Why would I pay $800 now for something that'll be worth $400 the next year? How about I pay $400 for an $800 device over the course of a year (so 0% APR), and use the $400 I didn't spend on an S&P ETF to earn a 3-5% annual rate with the same risk as the American economy? (Actually, depending on your brokerage, you could even invest $760 that first year, and deduct $40 from that account monthly to pay to lease the phone to eek out even more gain).

How low Apple has fallen....

Having to restrict the reservations to the upgrade program members, or else not having stock to supply both them and the general public?

Seriously, how low... hope it falls lower.

Must be hard for person like you this time of the year.

The $650.00 is a complete trap. You have to pay FULL retail for the iPhone of your choice first, then once you receive your new device, you send in your old iPhone, which takes THREE months to apply only as a bill credit. Allegedly, you can request the $650.00 to be applied your credit card.

The point is, Verizon wants you to pay full retail first, which is a joke. And your previous iPhone has to be in 'Good working condition.'

This wasn't true for me, not sure where you got this information. All you have to pay upfront is tax, like any other device payment plan, and then pay the monthly fee until your credit is applied after the 2-3 months.

Holy cow. Are you kidding me with this article?? People were gaming the reservation system for the IUP to get to the front of the line???

That makes the third time Apple has burned IUP members like me, and shame on you people who cut in line.

i won't be using my upgrade - fight amongst yourselves for my slot.

to paraphrase the late, great Bon Scott:

I got the jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack
I got the jack

Nope. I didn't pay the full price...Ipaid sales tax and I'm paying monthly on Verizon DPP and I'm getting $650 back over 24 months that offset the monthly payment starting 1-3 months after trade in (the first payment includes multiple months depending on how long it took for the credit). If it's not for you fine but for me it was a good deal.

It's the exact same thing people are doing when they sell a phone themselves to upgrade or when they use their carrier to do the upgrade swap. Characterizing it as renting a phone from Apple is disingenuous. If you decide not to upgrade on any particular cycle you'll simply pay off the device in the next 12 months and own it outright at that point. Just like with a carrier.

Quite easy actually, I'm an Android user where there aren't restrictions of any kind.

I did this and the IUP reservation system only asked for my Apple ID to confirm the time/location of the reservation and i paid full price for it.

No they weren't. There's no credit check when reserving the iPhone through the regular reservation.

Again, I helped 4 people do this. If you selected IUP as your payment method online when reserving, it required the full social security number and process. I saw it with my own eyes. This was during pre-order. So maybe it changed after launch, it when you did it during pre-order, you most certainly did the credit check right then and there.

I wonder if this affects buying the phone on the website and choosing "In Store Pickup" and getting a pickup reservation.

That's how I got my phone yesterday; paid in full online and then went to pick up my 7+ Black 128GB.

It would suck if this option was taken away from buyers as it was quite awesome; I like buying in person so if the phone has any defects out of the box, I can exchange it there and then.

guys dont buy into the hype. wait another year.

We iphone 8 users are going to laugh at you rocking the old iphones with the big bezels as the new iphone wont have a home button.

so essentially you're paying $400+ to rent the iphone from apple if you upgrade next year.

Or, and this is a different way to think for those that have a phone that needs upgrading, if you get on the iPhone upgrade program, the benefit is a yearly upgrade. So they can have a new phone every year.

So it's kind of a win/win.

Or maybe that's just how I see it cause I want a new phone every year.

But maybe that's just me...

Did you trade in your device? How much is your monthly fee if you don't mind me asking? That's how was it explained to me in the store. I will give Verizon a call. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

Another forum commented on this as well. This is how it was explained to me in the store. I will give Verizon a call tonight. Thanks for the information. Unless it has to do with a specific plan.
