Come on.

On any given day there are many human beings that are suffering. Just because it isn't on CNN doesn't mean suffering doesn't exist.

Maybe someone who buys the iPad 2 is going to invent something that saves people from the next earthquake.

Again - just what you said about the Japan earthquake shows that people value the dollar sign ($$$) more than just about anything else.

I get that - however these are extenuating circumstances. Yes, there are people in need all over the world at any given time. However there are also ongoing efforts to aid these people in some cases. Other cases due to political reasons, they can't be helped. Something unprecedented such as the tsunami requires efforts over and above what aid is already available.

I for one am cancelling my ski weekend and donating what I would have spent to relief efforts.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Apple products - I can see 4 from where I sit.

Interns aren't going to get enough experience. Shoot, call is when I did some of my scariest cases. Cases that gave me the confidence to realize I can do this. I'm willing to bet that medical error arises more from excessive sign-outs and patient hand-offs than from sleep deprivation. I can't even count how many times I received sign-outs consisting of, "Patient X is a 49-year-old male here for CHF exacerbation. He's been really stable. Don't worry, you won't get paged about him." Dude! That's bad for patient care!

Same here - rather be indoors at Northpark than outdoors at Knox w/ iJustin!

Totally agree. In a busy, high-energy environment I can STILL run hard and keep sharp for 36 hours straight on 6 hours sleep. And I'll be 43 at the end of this month. But I think a lot of people can, certainly those people who go into medicine. Sloth and/or a cavalier attitude has to be a greater issue with deficient patient care than sleep deprivation, because sleep deprivation can be overcome for the length of a call shift.

Got mine! Woot woot!!
Best Buy, waited two hours with some friendly people. Really enjoyed myself!
My first iPad! I'm excited!
Glad I didn't stay up 'till 4 am ET to order one!

well, that's it. Didn't get one. Waited in line for 2 hrs 45 minutes in 49 degree weather at the Manhassat, NY store. Those store workers were incredibly unprepared and disorganized.

Granted I only got there at 4 pm, and there were 200 people on line in front of me. They kept talking about handing out vouchers for different models, but they only started preparing the vouchers (matching each individual box to a sticker and then a card) at 5 PM. What were they doing all day?

I waited outside the entire time, the line moved slow as molasses, moved up by 10 feet every 30 to 40 minutes.

I feel like such an idiot. This was such a stupid idea, last time I stand on line for an Apple product.

Congrats to the rest of you that got one.

Unbelievable

Bastards! Apple saw that there were almost no lines so they changed ther online shipping window to 2-3 weeks to force people into lining up on the stores. Damn they ARE evil.

LOL Called my local Walmart in Wood River, IL and they said they had 10 , this was at 4PM So I got there around 4:20 and I was the first in line. By 5PM there was 5 people there. I waled home with a White 64GB iPad and a Cashmere Leather cover. I am happy, at least for the moment ;-)

I was the FIRST in line at a Target store to get my iPad. They had 3 in stock, but luckily it was the model I wanted. I arrived around 3pm, just two hours before they stared selling them (take THAT iJustin). The third person who waited in line and got the last one arrived at 4:30. Maybe 2-4 people came after that and were turned away. I guess not many people know about the iPad in southern Louisiana. Lucky me!

In two days they will be every where!

How does it feel to be a puppet of Steve? He could have released this the same way he released the new Macs!

And look no one even cared about the new Macs!

This shows you the way Apple is going, iPads, iPhones and iPods, NO more Macs!

What a waste!

To be fair, the new MacBook Air supposedly sold 1 million last quarter. iPads and iPhones appeal to the Windows crowd as well as the Mac crowd, though, so it tends to lead to bigger crowds.

That said, the iPad 2 release was big. Even Tice's Corner mall in New Jersey had a long line around 4:30 when I drove past it. It's usually pretty dead (I like to go to the Genius Bar there instead of Manhattan if I can). Apple obviously orchestrated this both by having no online pre-sale, and by starting sales at 5:00PM on a Friday. Perhaps the "dud" of the Verizon iPhone release prompted it. The latter was understandable since it was just a release of an 8 month old phone on a second dopey network (i.e. not a big thing in the grand scheme of things). iPad 2 is actually an improvement, albeit incremental.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, the earthquake pushed this to the back of the news. :(

Perhaps they actually sold a lot online? In any case, don't be surprised if that 2-3 weeks is a bit quicker in reality.

If you can wait a week or two, you'll be able to walk in a store anywhere and get one.

I can't say that I'm not bitter after standing in line for nearly 3 hours and then being turn away. That being said, it was my choice to go to that store on this opening day for a product that is by no means a necessity for me.

Still, I wish the store manager was more organized and had vouchers ready at 3:30 PM when the line was already past 150 people long.

The other issue that stings is that through the window I saw MANY people being 2 or 3 ipads. They should have limited it to one per customer. Oh well, hopefully in month I can pick one up.

Must be nice to have that kind of disposable income.
Two words for you: (1) CREDIT (2) CARD

Really? This many people on an incremental update? I'll pass.
For those that didn't buy iPad 1, this isn't an "incremental update" — it's the best tablet on the market and time to plunk the money down. Also, there are those (me) that wanted to have two iPads in the beginning (for me & the wife) but decided to just share for a year ... time to buy iPad 2 and stop sharing.

Shut up, troll. Dang — go somewhere else, you negative f-er.

I too waited 2.5 hours only to hear all sold out when I was tenth in line. Then it really bothered me that so many people walked out with two. No lines for me after today. Never again. It kind of puts a bad taste in your mouth. Maybe I will wait a few weeks before going back to the store.

It is nice.

I work 50+ a week, lots of late nights, long hours and weekends plus I am required to travel a lot and spend days/weeks away from my family and friends.

So why am I not allowed to enjoy what I worked hard to earn?

So yes, it is nice to have disposable income.

Would you give someone $900 for the 1st spot in line?

Close to sell out for me. White was the only color left at my store in N.Y. Apple is hiring some stunning women to work the lines so I took my white and silver voucher with a smile.

cluster frak

my first and last time waiting in line, the manager was totally disorganized and when asked "is this they way Apple Corporate says to do it, she said yes. I find that difficult to believe. are they that poor in inventory control?? is it that hard to know what shipments are in transit to a given store???

You're just wrong. There is a wealth of research on this, some of it dealing specifically with medical residents.

One of the first things to go when you're sleep deprived (or drunk, or outfitted with an M.D. ;) ) is the ability to realize you are impaired...

I meant to stop by the mall to see what the lines looked like, but started watching basketball and forgot. I'm sure it was pandemonium. No more standing in lines for me. After doing it last summer, I refuse to repeat that experience.

Now that was a huge line at the Apple Store. My count was roughly 300. I'm guessing The first to run out was the white 32GB WIFI with all 3G models running low but they seemed to get through to the end of the line. They couldn't have had many if any left. You can't see the front of the line from where I stood.
