...You can still initiate both from the keyboard but there's something special about 3 finger swiping upwards on your trackpad and having it show you every open window on your computer...

I always hoped we'd someday be able to converse with our computers the way we converse with one another, à la Star Trek, then they lost sight of that and started traveling down this highway of rubbing and sensually massaging our computing equipment instead.

I hoped maybe this was going to be the new way we all communicate but when I tried my new three fingered swipe hello gesture at a local café the woman proceeded to beat the crap out of me with her iPad 2.

Fortunately it was lighter and thinner than the previous year's model so there was far less bruising than I would have otherwise had.

… if I buy a new MBA with Lion, does that add Lion to my App Store account and allow me to install Lion on my MBP? …

Please see Mac OS X Licensing from Mac App Store.

… want all the junk files and crap out of the system …

As you could clean install Snow Leopard then migrate, assume that you will be able to install Lion over a clean Snow Leopard then migrate.

That actually is true 32 bit processors are no longer supported. Not a huge deal since that's just the first gen "Core Duo" machines. It will still support 32 bit apps of course, but he was right about the systems.

Apologies. I meant that support for the 64-bit kernel is not a requirement.

… flash plug-in run just fine.

Not totally fine …

3.Java is still very much supported, just no longer installed and maintained/updated by apple. …

I see screenshots etc. showing Apple providing the installation of Java for 10.7.

organizations already get an image.

For Lion, I have not yet seen from Apple any information about an image. Let's review this some time after the release of 10.7.

On the Apple page they advertise FaceTime with Lion but if you go to the page "All Application and Utilities" http://www.apple.com/macosx/apps/all.html You'll see FaceTime is not listed.

Please send feedback to Apple requesting clarification.

… is it that much more memory intensive? …

Unofficially, a few months ago: [Phoronix] Early Benchmarks Of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

Revisit that site after Lion is released. If not there, benchmarks will be elsewhere.

Don't expect any pre-release benchmark to be a perfect match for what's released.

One of my posts has gone from #203 to #198 197. Mods are modding at full speed it seems. Censorship is criminal in my view.

Not necessarily censorship. In a different topic, https://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=12865607 is an example of very kind moderation that merged multiple posts.

Apple doesn't have a particularly good record of supporting the previous OSX with its new software. Though, Apple did improve after SL was released.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ... some people here are acting as though they're being forced to upgrade at gunpoint...

YOU DON'T HAVE TO UPGRADE!!!

Snow Leopard will continue to receive security updates and such whilst Lion is the 'currently supported' OS.

These same people act as though their life depends on it... stop panicking; there's always this nonsensical panic before a new OS is about to be released and each time people act as though it's the end of OS X as we know it. Pretty much each time everything is just fine and we get used to it: it's called progress.

Please, calm the hell down.

I was thinking that it might be interesting to post a poll to see how many current OSX users intend to purchase Lion. I haven't seen anything in it (yet) that would cause me to want to spend the money - even if it is reasonably priced.

Good idea. I'm a bit hesitant and I upgraded to Snow Leopard on day one with no problems at all. Now, however, I'm running some painfully glitchy programs (DeltaGraph6, EndnoteX4) that I fear will implode if handled roughly.

Also, I've yet to be convinced on the increased useability or stability in the new version. I will wait a little while until I hear some reviews then likely upgrade.

I have 3 words for you. OpenGL 3.2 stack. As apps upgrade to it, I think we'll have plenty to play around with over the next few months. It's going to be pretty amazing in terms of game performance.

From what I've read mostly on this forum is that very few Apps have taken advantage of OpenGL - what is it about "3.2 stack" that might change that?

Note: It is a bit of a pain skipping over all the personal affronts being made in this thread to get at some real information.

I also await Lion. I will probably do a 2 step process on this. My Macbook Air seems the most ready for the change. May hold off on the Macbook Pro, though. If only because I do have a certain older program or two that is on it, that I'm not sure requires the Rosetta support.

You should read what you write: it's works for almost everyone, and those people for who it doesn't work get screwed. It's fine when the most important think you do with your Mac is download the latest Lady Gaga album, some people rely on their machines to get things done and don't want a widely untried system.

You know the same thing can be said pretty much with any operating system that exists out there.

You mean other than the fact that I haven't been able to get Time Machine to do a full backup on my iMac in over 4 weeks, since I put Lion on it, and I finally had to wipe the backup drive and start over last night? Long night, worrying about my pictures, music and documents.

I had the same thing happen on 10.6.8.

In the case where backups don't work and you have to start new backups from scratch, I'd definitely start the new backups on a new partition or copy the previous backups before wiping that disk. You don't ever want to be in a situation where you have no backup at all.

I see screenshots etc. showing Apple providing the installation of Java for 10.7.

When I upgraded from SL to Lion GM and launched PS CS5.5 for the first time, Lion popped up and said "you need to download java to proceed, yes?) and then installed java automatically and launched PS.

Can't wait to upgrade my new Macbook Pro to Mac OS X Lion! But I will be away for a week next week. Oh well we will still have 30 days to get it for free after it has been released right?

All this rumble about install Lion at launch or wait for 10.7.1 is just nonsense. And here's why:

1. If you download Lion means you have Mac.
2. If you have Mac means you have Time Machine.
3. If you have Time Machine nothing can go wrong. Even with the worst scenario (which I doubt judging by the GM stability), you can just switch back to 10.6.8 and keep going.

So, again, why wait ?

Stella,
Not sure what you mean here.... I had 10.5 on my other MBP forever and never had any issues with software. It also gets regular updates. I've always had the impression Apple has been pretty good about keeping a version or two back compatibility going.

I'm guessing you must have run into some problem before????

Like yours? You've just been attacking other people's observations blindly. You're like an anti-Apple fanboy.

Ah, no. I'm arguing a point, if you actually read my posts. Here's a some simple evidence: Look at any post here that criticises the Lion release, suggesting that it will be buggy. It gets down ranked, and the opposite for posts that support it. So why is Lion any different to previous Mac OS releases or any other bit of software? It will be hideously buggy, but most people here don't think, they just support Apple in a knee-jerk fashion.

So, tell me, why will Ion not be buggy and why shouldn't the first release be avoided as per usual? And watch this post get down ranked, LOL.

gone are Spaces..... it seems so much slower to switch between desktops using Mission Control and harder to keep track of where the open apps are

welcome iOS with Launchpad, not easy to find an app quickly using icons/symbols

scrolling up with a mouse wheel is actually going down and vice versa, drives me nuts...

Okay. Spaces are almost exactly the same and I don't understand how switching between them is any harder. In 10.6 i used cmd+# to switch (cmd+1 cmd+2 etc) in 10.7 i use cmd+# to switch (cmd+1 cmd+2 etc). it is -EXACTLY- the same. The only difference is instead of hitting f8 to zoom out and see all your spaces they show up when you use expose.

As for launchpad, just don't use it? I don't understand. I used it once to look at and haven't used it again. It's just a shortcut to your /Applications folder as far as I can tell.

Mouse scrolling can be put back to normal in system preferences.

Question, if I want a Macbook with Lion installed when do you think it will be available, at launch or a few months after?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; ru-ru) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Can't wait. Unbelievable.

Two kinds of Mac Users

There have always been two kinds of Mac users.

1. The Mac users who are excited about all the features of the Mac Computers, Mac OS and Apple software. They always want the latest that Apple has to offer and can't wait to get their hands on it.

2. The Mac users who use the Mac because it is the most reliable and stable platform for the software they need to perform their job. They tend to be more cautious and wait until the dust settlers before jumping into a new piece of hardware or a new operating system.

For example: I was going to wait a few weeks, but I am instead buying a second Mac today (with Snow Leopard), for the express purpose of using it for eCommerce Website development. I will be installing MAMP and a fairly large number of specialized web development applications on this machine. This would not be a good time for me to test a new OS.

I am a student who is getting ready to purchase a Macbook Pro. I am trying to figure out whether I should order it before the launch of Lion, or wait until I can buy with Lion pre-installed.

Given that the article mentions potential product delays due to desire for pre-installed systems, I'm leaning towards ordering sooner rather than later. What I need to know is if there are any potential disadvantages that I could face by ordering before Lion's launch. Any insight from the forum would be appreciated! :)

Why "sell" it in a retail store if its only available as a digital download?

Apple is all about Hype, they've got to get people whipped into a frenzy.

It's just what Apple does, they are addicted to their own hype and self importance.

Then there are "The Gullibles" they buy anything Apple
