well... the sooner it launches the better. Not so that I can buy it, but so that I can try it out and test it and evaluate it. To be honest, I don't think I'd actually bother upgrading any of my existing machines to Lion. I don't want to mess with their stability and performance. But I'd be happy to be a new computer at some point that has Lion pre-installed!

Why "sell" it in a retail store if its only available as a digital download?
For those with easy access to an Apple store, they may want to take advantage of faster internet, if theirs is slow, as well as genius assistance.

They have removed Front Row in Lion?? WTF?

Wont be purchasing Lion then, my wife would kill me if she couldn't sit and watch trailers and films in bed on her macbook.

Very odd decision.

yep, gone is Front Row, unfortunately

gone are Spaces..... it seems so much slower to switch between desktops using Mission Control and harder to keep track of where the open apps are

going into full screen mode and back is inconsistent and the apps fly off their original desktops (in a way it's cool but a little chaotic)

welcome iOS with Launchpad, not easy to find an app quickly using icons/symbols

fortunately the Dock is still with us, at least ith the GM

i'll miss Snow Leopard, personally i think Lion is over publicized and hyped up for what it is

maybe in time we'll get used to it and me over myself

eish

scrolling up with a mouse wheel is actually going down and vice versa, drives me nuts...

a lot of grey everywhere, oh poor old lion

Missing the Point

I haven't read every post, but I've read most of them and I think that everyone is forgetting that since there is no physical media that means the likelihood of stability is greatly improved. The reason that 10.X.1 comes out so quickly is that Apple finds bugs in the initial release, but it has already gone to the "presses" so to speak.

Because of that, they work hard and put together the .1 release and correct many of the issues. However, now, they have quite literally up until release time to get things right. There will, of course, still be bugs, but I doubt they will be as bad as others have experienced in the past ...

Just my two cents

Well i'm able to watch 1080p with Plex on a MacBook 3,1 with GMA 950 without any problems and Snow Leopard UI is very responsive with it. Actually Snow Leopard is more responsive with GMA 950 without dedicated memory (GPU itself sucks) than Lion with ATI 24xx, 26xx with 128/256 it's own memory and way better GPU

That's not bugs, that's worse. Hell even Vista was ok on GMA 950, Windows 7 was ok too, Linux with all the mambo jambo enabled works fine too.

I'd like to justify this, but i can't.

P.S. It's not all bread and butter on the latest i7 iMac i recently bought too and by the time they release it (if nothing is changed, fixed) there will be thousands of people having same problems.

That is sad to hear, but it isn't the least bit surprising. Apple seems to have been slacking as of late. Xcode and FCPX are perfect examples of this. Even smaller apps make xcode freeze up repeatedly. Apple always seems to use Mac Pros when they demo things, but not everybody develops their apps on mac pros. This thing is virtually unusable for anything major on my '08 MacBook. This isn't a performance computer by any stretch of the imagination, but it shouldn't take 10 minutes for google chrome's source code to finish loading, and then freeze repeatedly upon compiling, with the occasional crash. FCPX has been bashed enough already so I'm not going to bother.

On a side note: One of my posts has gone from #203 to #198 197. Mods are modding at full speed it seems. Censorship is criminal in my view.

Among them Apple's own Aperture, Pulp, Steam (Steam alone crashed about a dozen times today alone while it was downloading games) and Firefox. Basically, everything that opens a couple of network connections appears to be very crash prone on Lion -- my guess is that Lion's networking subsystem is not nearly as mature as it should be.

Firstly, I will point out that Window's never suffered from the issue of developers having to re-write some programs for an updated OS. That seems to be less prevalent in the Windows world.

I bring it up because the lack of updates to Steam, Aperature, Pulp and firefox to support Lion are probably the reasons why it's acting wonky.

One thing I can gurantee you, you have never worked with software development.
And 95% of people who use an OS don't develop software either. *LTD* have a very decent summary of his opinions on the OS. And I totally agree with him. Lion GM does seem to be very stable from what everyone has said. Sure it has not been totally benchmarked yet by the masses. But from early indications it looks very good.

And if all 250 features work (mostly bug free) then it will be a very hard act for the competition to follow. At the moment it looks like the desktop/notebook OS race is a one horse rase. And that horse is just trying to beat it's old personal best every time it races itself. Sure if W8 is good it can enter the race too. But that is yet to be seen.

And *LTD in that post did not say he worked in software development. And what he said did not make me think he wanted me to think he did. I think no one likes him around here cause he has the guts to speak the truth. Be it good or bad. With a lot less bias then others.

Bummer … what can i do, not going to switch back to Windows anyway :D

Maybe from the viewpoint of a blind Apple fan.

From the perspective of reading forum posts, however, it's clear that the "It just works" slogan isn't what it used to be. Waiting for Apple OSX 10.<whatever>.2 seems to be better advice than "wait for service pack 1".

(Better because Microsoft fixes things monthly, so "wait for a couple of Patch Tuesdays" is better advice for most people than waiting for a service pack.)

I really wish people would stop calling Apple software updates "service packs". If you have not figured it out yet this is an Apple-centric website. Where better then to find Apple fans. I guess from your view point Apple fans are blind but from my view point Apple has given me freedom from the Microsoft chamber of horrors that they call software. I, for one, am glad that Apple has gotten rid of Rosetta in Lion because that forces me to gladly uninstall Microsoft Office 2004 that is currently installed on my Mac computers at home.

Apple has its issues with both hardware and software, as any product built by humans does, but on the whole they provide the best user experience of any tech company. I have been using Apple products since 2001, after switching from Microsoft, and the reason I continue to use and buy Apple products is due to their user experience. I use Microsoft products at work. Every time that I use a Microsoft product at work only re-enforces one of the reasons why I continue to exclusively use Apple products at home.

Agreed. Windows 7 may be great, but it's going to take quite a bit more than just one OS release before I have any faith in Microsoft's software development abilities. ;) Mac OS's reputation is one of reliability and security, which to me is pretty important.

Hmm. I have the Macbook mid 2007 vintage, the last with the GMA950 and SysProf is telling me that it is revision 2,1. Is yours the same or does yours have the X3100 onboard? Even with Plex, 1080p only barely runs if the framerate is fairly modest, mostly it is a slideshow.

I am NOT advocating for Microsoft, as I work in a cross platform environment, with OS X, Win 7, and Linux. Personally I enjoy them all for their various strengths.

That said, after Win 7 SP1 was released, the OS is actually very nice. Fast, stable, reliable and ultimately customizable, you might be pleasantly surprised. It's security is every bit as good as Mac.

Usually the only people who are not at this juncture, are the rather narrow minded individuals that hang onto to grudges and resentments as a way of life.

I'm pretty sure it has GMA 950 :). Late 2006 and Mid 2007 are both GMA 950 and Late 2007 is X3100.

About playing it's not always great, but most 1080p files it's ok (few drpped frames here and there, but not a slideshow).

You mean other than the fact that I haven't been able to get Time Machine to do a full backup on my iMac in over 4 weeks, since I put Lion on it, and I finally had to wipe the backup drive and start over last night? Long night, worrying about my pictures, music and documents.

Fact is, Snow Leopard works just fine, and given hindsight I would have left Lion alone on a non-dedicated non-dev machine/partition until at least 10.7.1.

Ah, that's not just a lion thing. I re-installed Snow leopard (not even a clean install either), and now it won't backup to my time machine.

It's not even viewing it as a different computer either and wanting to do a separate backup (it did that once to me where it insisted it should start a new backup for a "different" computer. I forget what I had done then). But for some reason it wants to backup everything again and my hard drive can't contain that and I can't get myself to erase the old backups.

Quite frankly from your post, Lion seems junk. Definitely wont be bothering with it.

There's a lot of ignorant misinformation going on up in this thread.

Spaces is not technically gone. It's been replaced, along with Expose as we know it, and upgraded into a new feature called Mission Control. It combines all the awesome elements of Spaces And Expose and combines them into something completely more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lion is fast and awesome and amazing. If you have a trackpad or magic pad, Lion will change the way you use your computer and multitask for the absolute better. It is absolutely amazing and powerful and gorgeous.

...and Spotlight and the Apps folder are still with us. There's no need for anyone to use Launchpad if it doesn't suit them.

Isn't this customizable in system preferences?

Why so upset over no CD????

I don't care how I get it as long as I get it. I just don't get why the CD is so important to an individual. I can understand why some government agencies and corporate customers won't like it and Apple may have to give them install disks or disk images to make some — many of these organizations need a physical product in inventory.... but for the average customer... who cares unless you don't have internet????

organizations already get an image.

What if you don't?

Then obviously the implementation and evoking of the new features like Mission control and Launch Pad will have less of an effect on you. You can still initiate both from the keyboard but there's something special about 3 finger swiping upwards on your trackpad and having it show you every open window on your computer, organized by desktops(spaces).

It's a blast three finger swiping left to right to change from space to space. It's very fast and very responsive. amazing, really.

Not to mention inertial scrolling inside Safari or the new way it handles the back button. Two finger swipe left to go back a page in safari. A picture of the page appears instantly after swiping left and is reloaded once the animation is complete. It's seemless and awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

It's a step in a different direction of how multitasking is handled. It's user friendly in many ways but makes you feel powerful and godlike in others.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ... some people here are acting as though they're being forced to upgrade at gunpoint...

YOU DON'T HAVE TO UPGRADE!!!

Snow Leopard will continue to receive security updates and such whilst Lion is the 'currently supported' OS.

These same people act as though their life depends on it... stop panicking; there's always this nonsensical panic before a new OS is about to be released and each time people act as though it's the end of OS X as we know it. Pretty much each time everything is just fine and we get used to it: it's called progress.

Please, calm the hell down.
