You're going to get a decade out of this box that's a relatively small investment for any sort of business. It's certainly going to be less than your rent over that period of time.
You really shouldn’t be looking to get a decade out of any workstation/server equipment. That would end up being more costly in time and power consumption than it is to replace it with a modern platform. Whilst a year is an exaggeration if you are in the market for this because of its compute power you should probably also be prepared to replace it in a few years too.

It's not hard to grasp and it'd be nice if it did but I'm just not sure it's fair to look at it and go "NO NVIDIA" when you probably could use it. I'm talking about machine learning and science applications of course.
Sure, you can use it. But, personally, if I have to use (which means also administer) linux on some machines, I will simply switch the whole workplace to linux (no time to support two architectures if I don't have to). This is why it's really stupid from Apple not to have a server machine, a decent workstation supporting nVidia etc. A HW vendor has to offer a reasonable portfolio of products (not all of them necessarily highly profitable), otherwise people simply chose a more complete solution elsewhere. Just my 5 cents...

Today's Apple doesn't care about scientists. Their definition of pro users is video editing / media creation / photography, which are really not the highest demanding fields computational-power wise. :-(

Because some people like to run Mac OS (which they run on all other machines at their work). So hard to grasp?

Isn't CUDA just a proprietary standard for NVIDIA? They are not the only ones in ton that do parallel programming. But if you need CUDA, well

Remember when a pro Mac desktop tower was affordable to so many more people?? G3 or G4 tower with fold down side door anyone? Ah those were the days.

I do wish this came in at some lower prices for base configurations. Though we're not even talking anywhere near a comparable technology. Heck, my phone is probably more powerful than my $2500 mirrored drive door G4. I certainly will never miss the wind tunnel effect!

All the idiots stating that the Mac Pro is only for high end pro animation studios and the like. I have always had Mac towers, I love OS X but don’t like the iMac form or MacBook. Apple always had a base entry tower for designers like myself G3, G4, G5, Mac Pro 3,4,5. They were affordable, expandable, etc. However Apple are now only interested in the people willing and able to spend 1000 bucks on a sodding monitor stand. Screw you too Apple!
Yeah the old G5 macs were used widely in Digital Prepress but i don't see any printing company buying these new Mac Pros. The high end iMac now occupies that old G5 price range.

My only complaint is 2 thunderbolt ports and 2 usb ports.

I am barely making do with 4 TB3 ports and 4 USB3 ports on my imac Pro.

So is that a valid complaint? I am totally interested besides that, but can't think of any workaround to the huge amount of external audio gear I have in the studio.

4 ports on a 6 thousand dollar computer is indeed ridiculous.

Missing the point. It's totally modular and you can add what you want. I'd prefer a PCIe USB3 and future card expandability with no ports hanging out everywhere else. Add what you want!!!!!!

OMG. All the incessant bitching about price. This thing is a friggin steal at $6k!

March your little whiny butts on over to hp.com, and custom configure yourself an HP Z4 (nice machines btw) with identical specs to Apple's entry level config (or as close an equivalent as possible) and then ask yourself if you have any clue how much workstations cost!

I just did that very thing... Matched up an 8-core Xeon CPU, 32GB RAM, GPU, PCIe based SSD, etc. Was honest and remove things like standard 1TB HDD, CD drive, keyboard, etc. to match the config of new Mac Pro. The result? HP Z4 = $7221.00.

Now shut up and get back to work.

Gotta laugh at those who are railing against the people who complained or said Apple didn't care about Macs anymore. Really? You think it was your good will and willingness to accept whatever they pump out that got you a decent upgrade after 6 years of them sitting on their hands? Can't win with the zealots

Looks pretty decent. Still nothing here that should have taken them 2 or 3 or 6 years. A half way decent machine on the path to this a few years ago would have been great as an interm. x86 motherboards designs are offered by all of the major outsource manufacturers as well as Intel, they could have gotten a quick start.

.... so.... about time.

Of course, I also owned several XServes and an XServe RAID and that ended well... so we'll see how long they keep this up. I worry that the market they are chasing with this product already left in droves and isn't coming back.

now about my stupid 2018 MBP keyboard which keeps failing

What I love about MacRumors forums:

2013: The new Mac Pro looks cool but I hate it because it's underpowered and not expandable. Give me something more powerful and expandable and I literally do not care what it looks like!

2019: The new Mac Pro might be ultra powerful and highly expandable, but I hate it because it looks terrible!

Oh MacRumors forums, why can't I quit you?

MacRumors...Come for the information. Stay for the adorable moans-n-whines!

This is fair however most of the audio engineers / recording studio people I know are happy to have the option to spend more on a Pro machine like this.
Yeah it would be nice to have a more stripped down tiers of it for cheaper but then we'd have people complaining "I wish they had something in the 3999 range that gives me x, and y but without z"
They can't possibly please everyone. Most people I know involved in serious music production either uses a MBP or Mac Mini and makes it work despite some inconveniences or will spend the $$$$ to have something that is almost limitless. A lot of them are still using the 2008-2012 Mac Pros and have been waiting for this.
Thank you and that is me. I don't care about costs. I am fortunate in that I make a living from music production and I want a no compromise, fully expandable machine and it matters not whether I have to spend 10k or 30K. This is what us heavy pro audio users have been asking for. If you cannot afford it, buy in at the many other entry points Apple have created for us and allow us to get our order earlier. My MP 2010 has lasted this far, I expect this machine to last until 2030. Thank you Apple. Great job.

People complaining in 3... 2...

Who needs to complain when your preemptive criticism of those pointing out the price demonstrates you are already triggered by the price?

For what it's worth, I used to be a professional user who could justify the price due to work needs and the ROI of purchasing a $6000-$20000 machine. Not anymore but it'd be nice to have, say, a basic Mac with the same expandability as these beasts with lower tier standard parts and a starting price of closer to $2000. That would be insanely "grater" than this.

I think the point is that for the Mac Pro there is neither an entry level option nor a truly high performance option. For a comparison, a HP Z8 starts at USD 2489 for an entry level machine while you can also buy a 2x 28-core XEON CPUs model with 3TB of RAM nvidia or amd graphics, ssds, hdds, whatewer you might need...

Anyway, the crucial thing about the new Mac Pro will be how often will Apple be able to update it... What is needed is an update with *each* update Intel or AMD does to their product lines... which especially with the custom GPUs will again not materialize with Apple I am affraid. We have seen this in the past too many times. :-(

So this means you can stop mentioning the lack of a new Mac Pro in almost every news thread. Hope you enjoy your $6,000 purchase.
Wanna know what’s more annoying than mentioning Apple products in an Apple forum? Being rude for no reason. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is what many of us have been waiting for, so those of you who like to complain can suck it.

Have you been waiting for an obscene overpriced computer?

Apple prices are insulting when:

1- An iMac Pro deliver the same specs with a 1tb SSD and monitor for 5k. THe Mac Pro is 6k 256 SSD and no monitor.

2- Look at the BOXX machines. You can get similar- better specs for half the price of a Mac PRO. An 8 core with 32 ram and 512 SSD cost 3k.

3- WHen they intend to charge 1,000 for a monitor stand. This is pathetic.

Even when you buy a Ferrari, they do not ask you, hey if you want the steering wheel is an extra 10k.

Apple greed is obscene.

No one, but that's why their comparisons don't work. apples to oranges
You used the 1.5 TB RAM upper limit as the justification for the $6000 price of the base 8 core model. Nobody would put 1.5 TB of RAM to an 8 core CPU, hence that justification does not follow logic.

This is great! A bit overkill for me (what am I going to do with 1.5TB of RAM? 32 GB is enough for me), but great!
Simple, you are going to *not* populate those RAM slots... and let others have the RAM they need ;-)

Sounds intentional.

That’s what I thought too, until I checked the rear of the monitor. There, they stay in phase. Weird inconsistency.

They are on the side holes too, just angled in a little. It's a nice quirk and i think maybe a little playfully intentional.

I like your thinking. But, oddly, they didn’t carry this playfulness over to the monitor (rear) as well. There, the layers have holes with identical pitch and things remain “in phase”. Weird inconsistency.

No big deal. Just very un-Apple like, is all

I understand. My point that I'm making is that it's overkill for me but I understand the need to have more RAM. Please don't think I'm or hating or complaining about it, because I'm truly not.

No big deal. It’s not like I’m calling “Grater Gate”. Just very un-Apple like, is all
