That was one of the worst Apple events I have ever seen... and not even a , " oh and one more thing"???? That tells you how crappy it was.. I have no reason to even think about updating, glad I just sold my X, face ID IS HORRIBLE... glad to be back to my 6S plus with Touch ID WITH BETTER BATTERY LIFE than the X.... maybe next year Apple !!

It's "cheaper than the 8 Plus" says Phil... yes, but more expensive than the iPhone 8 it really replaces. So once again, Apple hikes the prices across the board...

Yes, and loses 3D Touch. So, it's not better than the iPhone 8 in any way.

No brown, no buy
For that perfect match with the brown Volvo V90 :D

Apple is really out to lunch on this pricing - but you can't blame them - if people were 'happy' to pay $999 why not push it to $1100

Agree, the iPhone X was £1000 and it’s the most popular smartphone. They’d be mad not to make more hay whilst they can. I feel the Xr will have the same fate as the 5c.

Was it just me or was the whole event super awkward?

Because they didn't have much new to reveal and they knew the pricing would garner mute response.

So they padded the whole event out with fluff. Its like a sandwich packed with lettuce.

I wasn't expecting much to begin with and i still ended up being unimpressed.

The lack of 3D Touch is telling. Evidently, it's not the way forward, and hasn't been widely adopted. Releasing this phone without it, certainly won't help with that.

It may or may not be indicative of where they're going. They had to create a new type of LCD display for a corner to corner screen all while making a less expensive iPhone X with very few other compromises. 3D Touch was left out on this model but it's been kept in the OLED models.

The language Phil used does say something about the future of 3D Touch though: "like we do on the iPad". They probably don't have any plans to bring 3D Touch to the iPad. I wonder if the Apple Watch Series 4 has 3D Touch. It's another all new display. If they left 3D Touch out there too, then I think we can assume that 3D Touch will be killed off the next time the OLED iPhones get a newly engineered display.

It's too bad, I think it had a lot of potential and really suffered from lack of discoverability — a solvable UI challenge.

Whats impressive about it? It's not even 1080p.

It's an s-series phone with the A12, so they didn't cripple the performance. I really expected an A11, which is typically how it goes with these sort of things. And engineering that LCD is actually impressive. I understand there's give and take, and it is still a step below the flagships, but it's also priced below the flagships accordingly.

And don't act like 1080p on a phone is the same as 1080p on a big screen TV. They are fundamentally different viewing experiences and form factors. Don't be disingenuous. You know PPI is what actually tells the story, and ~330ppi is plenty respectable — same as the iPhone 8.

Priced above even the higher end of Ming's estimates. He really blew it this time with absolutely none of his predicted price points in the ballpark.

Oh well, the Xs isn't worth $250 more than the Xr to me and I need a new device to replace my iPhone 6 Plus so the Xr it is.

This phone is literally 90 percent of the XS at 249 lesser price. It even now does portrait mode on a single lens. So for 249 more you can get the XS with a smaller OLED screen and 2X camera. Wow...what a blatant cash grab by Apple on the XS and XS max.

Larger, better quality screen in a smaller form factor, better battery life, faster processor, Face ID, wireless charging capability, and other changes aren't improvements? It loses the 2nd camera with the 2x optical zoom but other than that hasn't lost anything vital. The loss of 3D Touch is disappointing but honestly, a lot of people don't use it. I do but I could manage without it.

What is the PPI of the iPhone 6/7/8? Is it 326 or less?
326 on the iPhone 8.

The battery life of this thing is going to be incredible. They said 1.5 hrs longer than an iPhone 8 Plus.

Has all the high end components of the Xs series (only single camera of course and a battery sipping LDC) but for $250 less than a Xs and $350 less than a Xs Max - with the colors this thing should sell like hotcakes once they get them in stock. JMHO...

The other thing, with the reduced (but still retina) pixel count (and huge battery life) this is going to be the gamer's device - best performance for that A12 GPU.
on the pixel count - I put the OLED and LCD in front of my wife and she couldn't tell the difference and will NOT pay $250 more - since we are tekkies we can definitely tell the difference but Apple LCD displays are first class.
