Anyone going from a 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus or 8 Plus to the Xr is in for a dissapointing viewing experience. 326 ppi looks like crap next to the Plus' 401 ppi. The Xr might have faster internals, than the 8 Plus but it's screen is a major step backwards. Liquid Retina? Fail.

Bummer. Guess it's time to buy an 8 Plus (no OLED PWM flicker) sigh.

Article says the Xr has an aluminum back but Apple's website is saying it has a glass back to allow wireless charging.

EDIT: Article has been fixed.

It's an s-series phone with the A12, so they didn't cripple the performance. I really expected an A11, which is typically how it goes with these sort of things. And engineering that LCD is actually impressive. I understand there's give and take, and it is still a step below the flagships, but it's also priced below the flagships accordingly.

And don't act like 1080p on a phone is the same as 1080p on a big screen TV. They are fundamentally different viewing experiences and form factors. Don't be disingenuous. You know PPI is what actually tells the story, and ~330ppi is plenty respectable.
Well I didn't think they would use the A11. You do realize the iPhone 8 was 699 with the latest chip and the iPhone 8 plus at 799 had the latest chip as well during release. I see no reason to think they wouldn't put the latest chip in their 750 dollar phone.

You still haven't told me what's impressive about the LCD. Many flagship phones on Android has way more PPI For a lower price. The S8 has a 2k screen and released for a cheaper price.

You are really going to call 330 PPI plenty respectable? You do realize the iPhone 4 had a 326 PPI screen? Need I remind you the iPhone 4 was released in 2010. So 2010 technology should be considered respectable in 2018 and I'm being disingenuous?

It retains most of the camera features of its bigger brothers. I think that's pretty impressive.
Most? I would disagree since its missing a major hardware component (1 of the lens).

This phone is literally 90 percent of the XS at 249 lesser price. It even now does portrait mode on a single lens. So for 249 more you can get the XS with a smaller OLED screen and 2X camera. Wow...what a blatant cash grab by Apple on the XS and XS max.

Exactly!

I just went through the comparison rundown on the site and it still retains portrait, bokeh, and depth changer: all upgraded elements to the Xs camera. Also front 1080p camera and smart HDR. The Xs definitely has wider lens and better zooming capability but all in all, not bad at all.

The cameras aren't comparable. You're still going to get higher quality from the XS than the XR. So better screen, better photos, better battery life, better body material, better waterproofing, and more for that extra $249.

This price wouldn't be so bad if they at least included the gigabit LTE. I mean I'm glad it has band 71, but come on.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that Xs only comes with 64, 256 or 512 GB. So if you worry about those 64, you have to opt for the 256, thus paying even more. The Xr, however, comes with 128 GB as well.

Yea but your listing incremental updates. Better, better, better, which no one is contesting. Everyone knows the quality will be higher on the Xs and Xs Max. But specific features such as portrait, bokeh, and depth changer are all going to be available on the Xr which is really quite awesome. No one in this generation of iPhone will be left out of the dust when it comes to camera features.

What in the hell was that? I'm so disappointed at the price point, I understand that it's got the latest specifications but I would've settled on earlier generation chipsets at a lower price. This is ridiculous! Apple has the opportunity to truly be worldwide and easily exceed Android marketshare if they wanted to but they refuse to do it.

I know it's often been said that they hate producing "garbage products" but the truth is we have many examples of companies creating quality products for a lot less. I do love the new design of the iPhone 10R but man what a disappointment. I was actually thinking they might let it go for $499 but I was dead wrong. Yes, some people will argue "Oh, just earn more" but it's not even about the money, it's about the price to performance/feature benefits. Why would anyone simply spend more for an Apple label?

Anyway, I'm incredibly disappointed. I do love the design more of the iPhone 10 R over the other iPhones but I guess I'll stick with Android for longer. Just as an example we have companies like Xiaomi, One Plus and others creating the same space grade aluminum phones with curved glass and they start as low as $189USD with a Snapdragon 625, 4GB RAM & excellent cameras for the price point. I'm not suggesting Apple has to go that low, but the point is you can get amazing phones for a lot less on the Android side and it should be possible for Apple to do it.

People truly underestimate the actual hardware cost of FaceID. Apple's only move to make this cheaper would be not including it, which is what the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 are. And, they have earlier generation's chipsets just like you're suggesting - and at a lower price. Why does something have to be newly released when essentially everything you're asking for is actually available already.

PPI is not "technology".

The person I replied to said "PPI is what tells the story" then proceeded to say 330 PPI is respectable. Hence, my comment that the iPhone 4 had 326 PPI.
No matter how you want to twist it, a 720p screen is still a 720p screen.

Well, google's new Chrome update has extensive 3d touch support...

I think 3D touch is EXCELLENT - adding tactility to a touch experience is excellent, they just are price gating the feature.

Better off buying used X

Why would anyone get the XS instead of this? Aren’t they virtually the same except for the screen resolution?

Screen resolution, screen tech (LCD vs OLED), less advanced camera (single lens vs dual lens), no 3D Touch.

Love the colors of the Xr. Feels fresh and reminds me of the 5C at the same time. I would love to get one, but not for $749. $499 and sold. They outpriced me ;(

Buying a new iPhone SE from Walmart for $139 right now. Gonna but two more to stock up. Love these little devices

Over 300ppi is enough, going over 400 its just waste of battery.

Why? It's the size of a Plus phone. The base Plus phone model was $800. The iPhone 8 is still there for those of you who want a smaller screen.

/I have an iPhone 7 and am not planning on upgrading this year because I'd rather get an Apple Watch than a new phone (I haven't ever had an Apple Watch but the 4 looks like the right time to jump in).

WRONG! That's an insult to anyone who likes the smaller screens. The 8 is a 10 year old design. It was dated when it was launched last year. Plus why buy an expensive 'old' phone? I love smaller screens but as an educated guy, why would a buy an old design and model just for that?

You know PPI is what actually tells the story, and ~330ppi is plenty respectable — same as the iPhone 8.

I would have been at least a little impressed if they had kept the 401 PPI from the 8 Plus screen. This has the same PPI as the display on the iPhone 4 from back in 2010.

From the keynote Phil said they worked on pixel anti aliasing, and other pixel blah blah blah on this new LCD screen. So with a lower ppi the screen can look as good as the current Plus screens. I will wait to see for myself.
