I agree that the choice for many is really between Xr and used X. Price is roughly the same. Pro for Xr: Larger, better chip, color options, more advanced computational photography including bokeh mode. Pro for X: Better display, dual camera, 3D touch (though that I don’t really care about personally).

The cameras aren't comparable. You're still going to get higher quality from the XS than the XR. So better screen, better photos, better battery life, better body material, better waterproofing, and more for that extra $249.
And this is where all the BS starts. These models are too confusing and you are mistaken on a couple things. The battery is 1.5 hours better on both (per the keynote). The cameras are IDENTICAL aside from the 2x second lens. (The XR does portrait mode now with a single lens per the keynote). SO in the end its slightly better materials, a 2X lens and OLED which no one cared about for over 10 years....and a smaller screen than the XR. Yeah I call that pure greed especially on the XS MAX PLUS EXTRA MEGA SUP.....Apple needs a new marketing team PERIOD.

For people who were expecting $699, for $50 more, Instead of a possible A11, we got A12, instead of First gen not quite good enough Face ID, we got Face ID 2.0, instead of possible crappy iPhone 8 camera, we got the iPhone Xs Single Camera, instead of no Wireless Charging, we have it built in.

So apart from the 326 PPI Retina, Xr is better than what I expected.... except....

iPhone Xr should be using the same Intel baseband modem as the Xs. While Xr don't get 4x4 antenna, which is fair since it is expensive to make, there are NO reason why Apple has to take LAA off Xr. It SHOULD BE STANDARD across the new iPhone. LAA will dramatically improves speed in congested area like Cities, and allow faster speed for everyone else, it is one of the most important technology for carrier to improve their capacity.

No more original X at a reduced price. SE removed from sale. And only the 8 and 7 still available. At least the line-up is starting to become a little cleaner haha

If you care a lot about price, I think you should buy used. There are so many used iPhones out there and even the 6 works just fine. Get the battery replaced and you are good to go. I think Apple has a handle on the used market and has realized that used iPhones have really become their entry level device.

This seems like the phone people should and will get. No worries about burn in of OLED phones, bigger than the smallish Xs, wireless charging, good price.

Smart play by Apple.

I think it is a bit sad that apple didn't surprise us with a $100 price drop on all devices. It wouldn't mean that much less profit margin for apple but it would mean a MUCH better position against the competition and, at least what I think, would drive the sales a lot more. But what do I know - I don't work in marketing...

Well, google's new Chrome update has extensive 3d touch support...

I think 3D touch is EXCELLENT - adding tactility to a touch experience is excellent, they just are price gating the feature.

Force touch is great on the track pad and a worthy replacement to 3D Touch (which I till today thought was the same thing...)

Why? It's the size of a Plus phone. The base Plus phone model was $800. The iPhone 8 is still there for those of you who want a smaller screen.

/I have an iPhone 7 and am not planning on upgrading this year because I'd rather get an Apple Watch than a new phone (I haven't ever had an Apple Watch but the 4 looks like the right time to jump in).
Plus still has a wider screen. The XS Max is one to get imo

That was one of the worst Apple events I have ever seen... and not even a , " oh and one more thing"???? That tells you how crappy it was.. I have no reason to even think about updating, glad I just sold my X, face ID IS HORRIBLE... glad to be back to my 6S plus with Touch ID WITH BETTER BATTERY LIFE than the X.... maybe next year Apple !!
Yeah okay bud

I'm in on this, 128GB for $799. But MAN, I wish that blue phone was well.. blue! What grown person wants a baby sky blue phone? Ah well. Black it is.

I like the XR a lot, but I do question the need for the XS, and you can tell people are going to be confused just by these posts here already. I think two models is fine, this one and the Max.

Bigger phone = more bandwidth interface with your tech, to channel Elon Musk.

I really don’t like what Apple has done here. This is not the iPhone 8’s successor. Apple effectively introduced the X last year to increase prices to and above the $1k mark. Since I would guess the majority of sales and financed through either carriers or Apple, they thought to themselves $5 more here or there will not affect sales negatively. This XR just feels too cheap and will go the way of the 5c eventually.

Personally I will keep the 7 Plus until it can’t keep up with the apps I use or 16:9 support is killed off altogether. The XS Max just wont improve my life in any way and I could care less about being seen with the latest phone.

I'm probably in the minority here but I think the XR will be a hit. Not everyone wants or cares about OLED; I personally much prefer the LCD screen on my 7 compared to my wife's X. The XR will be a nice upgrade for me; faster FaceID, all the new internals of the XS, better battery life than the 8Plus, a 6 inch screen with the same PPI as my 7 and still in a decently sized body (hopefully single hand use is good) and a great single-lens camera. The 128GB is also the sweet spot for me, 64 is kinda small and for my use I'd never need 256.

The only negative for me is the late October availability but it makes sense for Apple to do that, get as many impulse buyers on the XS as possible.

I'm trying to figure out the camera differences between the Xr and the Xs. It looks like the Xr uses the same sensor/aperature as the wide angle camera on the Xs. It lacks the telephoto camera, plus has a smaller flash assembly. Both have image stabilization. Do we know if there are other differences? Will the advanced computational photography elements they discussed like smart HDR also work on the Xr?

Will these have a glass back so you can charge wirelessly?
Looks like it, the Apple page lists it as a feature....although I am surprised as I though it was all aluminum. Could they have figured a way around the metal back issue technically?

Why would they discontinue the iPhone X? Is it just to make people spend more money to get the improved camera on the XS?

What's cheap about it? It's a big phone, it's all screen, it has the latest greatest mobile SoC on the market with the A12, it charges wirelessly, and looks great.

I still do think they’re the same thing. What’s the difference?

I’m really liking the XR. I don’t care about OLED. I don’t object to the price. I love the colours (I want the red one). I’m not seeing what the XS offers that’s worth another third of the price.

But Face ID — can I bear to part with Touch ID?
