Yeah yeah, the best (insert anything Apple here) we have released yet.

I know the coolaid.
They’ve made a point of discussing that they’re now using transformer ML models. That’s a major difference. You may not care about the reality of what’s under the hood and what it takes to do that on a handheld device, but it’s is a major update.

Transformer models are considered the latest and greatest in the ML (I refuse to call ever damn thing AI) field.

If the Favourite Songs playlist works anything like the Likes Songs playlist I used to have on Spotify I'd be quite excited.

Sometimes you just want to preserve a song you hear on continuous streaming for repeated listening without adding it to your library straight away.

This really doesn't feel like a feature though that should require an OS update.

As someone suggested above, Apple really should start updating some of its core apps directly through the App Store.

Apple announced that iOS 17 will be released on Monday, September 18 for the iPhone XS and newer. The free software update includes a wide range of new features, but not all of them will be available right away, according to Apple.

Below, we have listed three features that Apple's website says are "coming later this year" as part of a future update, such as iOS 17.1 or iOS 17.2. In addition, Apple shared a PDF this week outlining even more iOS 17 features that are now labeled as "coming later this year," and we have listed those additions below.

Journal App

An all-new Journal app will allow iPhone users to reflect on their day and memories, complete with text, photos, music, audio recordings, and more. The app will provide personalized suggestions based on recent on-device activity.

Collaborative Apple Music Playlists

A new Collaborative Playlists feature for Apple Music will allow multiple people to add, reorder, and remove songs in a shared playlist.

AirDrop Transfers via Internet

If you send content like an image or video to another user via AirDrop, the transfer will be able to continue over an internet connection if you leave AirDrop range, so long as both you and the recipient are signed in to an iCloud account.

More Features Coming Later This Year
  • React to a message with any sticker through the Tapback menu in the Messages app.
  • A catch-up arrow for group conversations in the Messages app.
  • Sync additional settings with Messages in iCloud, such as Text Message Forwarding, Send & Receive accounts, and SMS filters across devices.
  • Play or pause a podcast or Apple News+ audio story in the Apple News widget.
  • Favorite Songs playlist in Music app.
  • Intelligent form detection and enhanced AutoFill for PDFs.
  • Audio Focus feature for Apple Fitness+ that prioritizes the volume of either the music or the trainers' voices depending on your preference.
  • Apple ID proximity sign-in with an existing signed-in and trusted iPhone or iPad.
Apple is already testing both iOS 17.1 and iOS 17.2 internally, according to our website's analytic logs. iOS 17.1 is likely to be released in October, while iOS 17.2 should be available in December, based on Apple's previous software release cycles.

Well this is not iOS 17 this is iOS 16 and a half.

I mean there is no point in releasing a new OS if the features are not in, just release the fixes as a minor update and when you are ready release the full os.

I think it’s time to move away from the yearly OS release.
So, you'd rather miss out on finished features for months until unrelated features are finished?

Especially if the features are not ready. I mean they have known for a year what was going into 17, so what's the problem?

It’s just a lot to hold back. Apple has been getting in the habit of announcing stuff in “beta”, that then never gets released or is released half baked years later.
I think they probably have just one team that can write good reliable code. With all of the other software problem Apple has had, this one team is the only one that can work on new features. Or maybe the one good team is working on infrastructure code. Whatever the case, they need software engineers that are more experienced than kids in High School. But alas that costs more.

I really hope the Journal app comes to the Mac too. I don't see it being useful unless I can type on a real keyboard on my computer when journaling.

But then you can't use the new and improved autocorrect and help train it on your deepest darkest thoughts.

Apple engineers are well paid (well, the ones that aren’t contractors anyway…).

I'm disappointed that Standby mode only works while charging. With an "always on" display capable device, why not allow this function while not charging?

Wait iOS 17 isn't ready? I thought they were releasing the update next week? What do they have done then?

So basically everything??…then why even “release” iOS 17 right now lol

When an OS is not ready they should wait till all features are ready.

Just release security patches in the meantime.

Apple announces what is going to be "in" the next update at the Developer's conference. This allows developers to plan ahead for features within their own app. They also know that the tech heads will get excited about feature announcements as well, but the main purpose, hence the WWDC timing, is for the developers.

For 90% of the general public, the features released when the operating system makes it to their phone, is just the "next update" and they won't know or care if a feature makes it in now or in four months when their phone updates again.

I do agree about the yearly release not needing to be "a thing"

If it's not ready then don't announce it.
It's for the developers not for the general public. Developers would be pissed if they didn't get to know about features until Apple was releasing them to the general public.

Almost feel they should change their whole OS release/tabulating system.

Agree, I feel like it spreads the work too thin and takes too many subsequent versions to make features truly useful!

Apple really ought to consider moving the Journal and Music (and other 1st party) apps as App Store apps, so they are not at the mercy of iOS updates and they can get fixes faster.

This has already been out since at least beta 3! It works great, I always found the music is way too quiet. This is especially useful during the HIIT session where you really need music to motivate you to push.
Check the iOS 17 Release Candidate. Apple might have removed it before public release if they've punted it to "later this year." Let me know. Thanks!

Is this Favorite Songs playlist coming in Apple Music supposed to mimic the Liked Songs playlist on Spotify? I do love that. I use both Apple Music and Spotify and enjoy parts of both.
