STOP for a moment and realize something before you go out and dump your wallet out:

* iPad's never were weak in the hardware department - they are terrible in the software. Games/Apps aren't limited in terms of what it can do but how you can do it with an iPad which just sucks compared to a real productivity device

* The pricing of these things are more than a real competent laptop. These things are just toys compared to real laptops that can do real work.

I don't care if these things have Face ID. The fingerprint was good enough. Just the pricing on these things are atrocious - all that for scribbling some art and watching youtube. Price is outrageous.

I have 2 iPad Pro 12.9, more than 4 iPads from all the years and let me tell you the 12.9" doesn't even get used. Collecting dust because once I tried hard to fit a good productivity workflow using solely the iPad, it was like jamming a square peg in a round hole. I just went back to a real PC desktop for power use and a laptop for some light work + smartphone for on the go...

Until apple decides to stop using the same junk iOS they do on the phones but enlarge it on the iPads, I will never ever again buy another iPad. Waste of money! The best thing about these new iPads is the form factor it's much more sensible especially with the pen attachment. With one single USB-C, you're gonna need more dongles and it's not the same as a real laptop with USB-C - this one is just gimped when it comes to what you can do with it.

Trillion dollar company needs ways to keep growing - this is pure business and apple is no fan of your wallet. Wipe off that grin on Phil Schiller's face and you will see they are not a company that cares about their customers....or their wallet.
I agree. I’ve had two full size iPads and one mini. They always get less and less use over time. The os is just super limited I’d rather use a real computer. It’s just a big toy is all these are imo.
Apple won’t release a laptop style os until it’s milked all it can out of the mobile os platform I think. When sales come to a very slow crawl they will have to have a huge overhaul on the software side. It’s alwys been the limiting factor that won’t make these really laptop killers. I won’t be spending a grand on a big toy anymore till they do.

Bwahaha! That camera sticking out like a sore thumb! Watch the tablet wobble like a rotten tooth on the table!
And wouldn't it be great if this thing could run a proper OS. What would you use it for? Browse the web? If you want to write things, you need the keyboard. And then you might as well get a Macbook.

What are tablets for??

Didn't get to watch the event. Can you finally connect hard drives to this thing now?

LOL, just NO. 1TB but seriously, just NO.

edit: before you gripe about how I took the most expensive model - you can get a cheaper surface pro 5 or even the 6 and it would destroy this iPad "pro" in productivity. The biggest deal breaker on the surface pro is the battery/entire device is throw away/non-replaceable and they even got the balls to make the SSD blade in the surface pro 6 model non-removable unlike the 5 version. But then again, all these iPads are throw away as well...

Although I agree the 1TB version is a tad pricey...I would argue against your assertion that the surface pro would destroy the new iPad pros in productivity. That is a very subjective opinion. I am a professional artist, and have switched to using the iPad Pro exclusively for all my content creation. I cannot wait to get my hands on one of these babies!

Extremely wise - One of the few left that can see past that apple reality-distortion field.

These look like great devices, but make me happier with my 10.5” purchase last year. Got $100 off at Best Buy for device that runs as great as it did when I bought it. It’ll be interesting to see where the iPad and Mac lines will be in 3-4 years when I’ll be ready to upgrade again.

If you feel the tool is exactly what you would need to produce the best results, that iPad is for you. I'm not saying it's pure junk - but the pricing is just apple-esque as in if you are missing an additional anus, let them rip open a new one for you.

The iPad is nothing more than a consumption tool for majority - and if it was meant to do just one thing such as drawing, it's way overpriced IMO!

My husband uses his iPad Air All. The. Time. for pretty much everything. I haven't touched my iPad Mini in months. We have an entire Apple ecosystem, complete with iPhones, iMac, MBP. I will never use an iPad for most of the things I do on the Macs simply because the iPad is not capable of doing them (Matlab? Parallels? Endnote?) or it's really not convenient (I don't feel like typing long texts without a dedicated keyboard - and yes, I do realize I can pair any BT keyboard with an iPad, but then again...see #1). Some time ago I got a Kindle Paperwhite for light reading, which I used to be doing on the Mini, but battery life and weight are just undebatable. Also, the Mini has just become really really really slow.

For me, Macs and iPads complement each other. I can live without an iPad, but absolutely cannot live without a Mac. But, an iPad is a nice addition and CAN be more than a toy. It all comes down to what you do with either device. For many, an iPad can indeed be their standalone computing machine.

Lately, I've been looking into upgrading my Mini, particularly for photo development/editing for when/which I don't want to take out the Macbook. The Pencil is extremely intriguing for this (I'm a graphics tablet user on the iMac, so I've always been missing the stylus on the Macbook, and while the Macbooks' trackpads are leagues ahead of any trackpad on Windows Laptops, it's still not my favorite input method).

But at this price point I probably will have to pass. I'm not going to buy the 10.5" as a compromise. I was ready to buy the new Pro at a similar or slightly increased price point, but $150 more is a hell lot of money for a student.

You are just locked into your thinking. Trapped in your bubble. Clinging to what you know, and afraid of change. That’s all. Do you even know how many professionals have ditched their laptops in favor of iPad pros? Do you? Obviously not. Cause it’s a lot! So they are all wrong? Hmm? Just admit that you prefer a laptop and leave it at that. Cause you sound extremely ignorant, and frankly foolish pounding the table with your blanket statements saying the iPad Pro is a toy. Seriously foolish. Us professionals who use them don’t take offense to posters like you...we just find it funny. I’m trying to help you here. You sound like an old curmudgeon complaining about kids on your lawn. Lol.

I get that you can hook it to an external monitor, but has anyone seen if the inclusion of USB-C enables the iPad, itself, to be natively used as a second monitor?
Say, hooking it to an MBP as a second screen? Yes, I've got Duet Display, but the recent overhaul to accommodate the change to underlying video functionality really left me disappointed. Was hoping there'd be native support for it with this?

I hate this argument. It all comes down to what a person needs to get their job done. What works for you does not work for everyone else. That doesn't mean people are old or trapped in a bubble, it means they have different needs than you. If you can get by, and a lot of people do, than great. But there are still way too many limitations in iOS for others.

People have been complaining about Apple pricing since the beginning. It’s nothing new, and definitely not an iPad specific thang. It’s across the board on all their products. People grumble about it, but they buy them anyway, because they appreciate the build quality. The seemless integration of hardware & software. The fact that they just work. I think your bias against the iPad and your inability to see it as nothing more than a glorified iPod Touch blinds you a bit. Well, more than a bit. Lol. Look, I am not trying to convince you. Stay in your bubble shaking your fist in the air. Meanwhile, me and many other professionals will gladly buy the new pros. A full version of photoshop is coming. The new pencil is sweet. They are slimmer and more powerful than most laptops. It’s a dream machine for us. And no amount of shade from anyone will dissuade us of this fact. And I don’t think anything I say or anyone says will convince you. Just don’t stress about it. Hope all is well in your world. Peace ✌️

Agreed!

Back when I got my iPad Mini, I got it primarily for reading. I had/have to read a lot of PDFs, which is no fun on a computer and I didn't want to print hundreds of pages, each time. I travel a lot and being able to save weight of books, is crucial. The added bonus of having something to watch your personal movies on on long-distance flights as well as being able to do light computing (you know, emails, web browsing, you name it), was an added bonus. The previous iPad was too big and heavy for what my main purpose would have been, so I was overjoyed when the Mini came out.

Over time, my need to read that much decreased, so I used the iPad Mini less and less. I did use it for outreach presentations all the time, still. We also have swapped paper and pencil for iPads for field work (professional context). I stopped using it mostly because it's become really slow.

My general use case changed since I got the Mini. I need to do less reading, but I picked up my photography hobby again. Being able to edit photos has just recently become more interesting on the iPad with LR mobile, which wasn't available for the longest time, making an update very compelling.

Just because YOU don't use an iPad as more than a toy, doesn't mean no one does. Don't look like an ignorant fool.

That’s my point! I was referring to the posters attitude towards iPads as toys. Saying how they aren’t for serious work etc etc etc. I have nothing against anyone saying the iPad is not for them. What I take offense to, is this blanket statements from people saying how it applys to everyone. That nobody can use an iPad professionally, cause it’s just absurd. So yeah, in that sense, I think these people are living in a bubble. Again, not cause they don’t use an iPad...but because they say that nobody can seriously use them. That they are just toys. You don’t see me trashing people who use laptops! Like you, I believe whatever tool gets the job done is awesome!

You miss the point. The iPad works for some, it doesn't for others. Doesn't legitimate umbrella statements like "this is just a toy" and "real professionals would never".

It’s ridiculous that the current iPad Pros stay in the lineup but get no price reduction. Even more ridiculous is the iPad mini didn’t get killed or updated and no price change. Good grief.

I have ordered the 12.9” 1TB wi-fi+cell, keyboard and pencil. I am hoping will nicely provide almost the portability of the 10.5” with the larger screen 12.9” screen I prefer to use. Will keep my present 12.9” iPad Pro as a second screen on my desk, as I am getting to like working with a two iPad Pro set up - while my 10.5” is great for working in the car, on economy seat flights, or for watching a video in bed.

It is a lot of money, but the iPad Pro is my main work device by far.

The majority for which it is just a consumption tool will not buy such an expensive device. For those, there are cheaper options even within the Apple ecosystem.

Overpriced for drawing? Do you know what for example graphics tablets cost?
