I love this new iPad and want to buy it. There is this nagging feeling though that all software is going to the web pretty soon and all that power does not allow me to work in G-Suite in an acceptable manner and I’m stranded with a ferrari that I can’t even use to drive to the super-market.
I’m really afraid for Apple in those coming years when the hardware will be more and more irrelevant.... Photoshop on the web when Speed is fast enough...

The majority for which it is just a consumption tool will not buy such an expensive device. For those, there are cheaper options even within the Apple ecosystem.

Overpriced for drawing? Do you know what for example graphics tablets cost?

Exactly! The iPad pros have liberated artists. It’s the ultimate digital sketchbook. Such an amazing amazing tool that’s well worth the price. Even if that’s all it did...but it does so much more. So much.

It’s ridiculous that the current iPad Pros stay in the lineup but get no price reduction. Even more ridiculous is the iPad mini didn’t get killed or updated and no price change. Good grief.

There are so many products and SKUs in the Apple lineup, its resembling the mess pre-Jobs return. Plus its becoming confusing for the “average” consumer. Ah the dongles live on.

Either revamp the entire line and discontinue the previous models or discount them. Though the new iPad Pros are beautiful, I have no interest, still sporting my 2017 iPP. These devices are seeing insane prices, how many does Apple plan on selling at those prices and for how long wil the market momentum for a tablet hold.

STOP for a moment and realize something before you go out and dump your wallet out:

* iPad's never were weak in the hardware department - they are terrible in the software. Games/Apps aren't limited in terms of what it can do but how you can do it with an iPad which just sucks compared to a real productivity device

* The pricing of these things are more than a real competent laptop. These things are just toys compared to real laptops that can do real work.

I don't care if these things have Face ID. The fingerprint was good enough. Just the pricing on these things are atrocious - all that for scribbling some art and watching youtube. Price is outrageous.

I have 2 iPad Pro 12.9, more than 4 iPads from all the years and let me tell you the 12.9" doesn't even get used. Collecting dust because once I tried hard to fit a good productivity workflow using solely the iPad, it was like jamming a square peg in a round hole. I just went back to a real PC desktop for power use and a laptop for some light work + smartphone for on the go...

Until apple decides to stop using the same junk iOS they do on the phones but enlarge it on the iPads, I will never ever again buy another iPad. Waste of money! The best thing about these new iPads is the form factor it's much more sensible especially with the pen attachment. With one single USB-C, you're gonna need more dongles and it's not the same as a real laptop with USB-C - this one is just gimped when it comes to what you can do with it.

Trillion dollar company needs ways to keep growing - this is pure business and apple is no fan of your wallet. Wipe off that grin on Phil Schiller's face and you will see they are not a company that cares about their customers....or their wallet.

I realize all those things. Hey, i'm willing to pay 600-800 for a nicer ipad then the entry level ones. These ipads will never replace a mac or pc for me because of what i do and needing so many windows applications or connected to other hardware. I've been using pc's since the 80s and perhaps take my knowledge for granted here but I couldn't live without one.

But sure, stop. Are people really paying up to 2k for an ipad? LOL Like I said, i wait and get one on discount. I don't need much storage. Don't need applecare. Don't need LTE. Don't need a smart kb i'll never use because why? I have laptops. An ipad is all about entertainment/drawing/reading for me. Tap screen and go. iOS is smooth unlike windows and surface and made for touch apps. It's a fun device to use. Just don't go overboard paying for things you don't need.

Even if that’s all it did...but it does so much more. So much.

You continue to miss the point / are only hearing yourself.

The point is, for some people it's a pro machine, and for other people, it's not. Just because you think it's a pro machine for your needs and others, doesn't negate the fact that it's not a pro machine for other people. So, he is justified to say it's not a pro machine, because he's speaking for himself and others like him, not the people who can use it as a pro machine.

(Btw, I'm getting the 11" iPad for professional photography / Lightroom CC and the future Photoshop CC, but it doesn't blind me to the fact that for some people it's too limiting).

We can agree to differ. My MacBook has hardly been used since the iPad Pro came out - and the last few months my iMac has hardly gets touched either, as 99% of my work is done using two iPad Pro’s.

Well this stinks. According to the Verge "but we’ve confirmed that it will not support external storage over USB-C". No access to external hard drives.

Possibly not a "never" thing, but a "not yet" thing. I imagine it will eventually be exposed by changes to Files - lots of changes if it is going to support erasing/formatting media, doing filesystem checks, etc.

Can it run Final Cut Pro X? Or Logic Pro X? Can I open files from a USB HardDrive with it? If not, this is nowhere near anything “Pro”. It should be able to do these tasks at a minimum to be called Pro.

Ugh. That’s not what I said at all. You are the one missing the point. I am not the one saying the iPad is for everyone and laptops are toys! Lol. I was merely responding to someone who DID say the iPad was a toy and not for any professional use EVER. Which is such a blanket statement. I never said an iPad is better for all. I am completely device agnostic! If you like laptops GREAT! If you can’t do what you want on an iPad cool! Buy a laptop and be happy! I have not posted one thing against laptops or anyone who uses them. Nor have I said the iPad is the be all end all for everyone. For the last time, all I was doing was defending the iPad against those who said it was a toy and not for any professional use. Which wasn’t a personal statement. They were saying NOBODY could ever use an iPad seriously for more than anything but content consumption. THAT is an absurd and false statement. Do you realize how many pros use iPads in the field? How many magazine covers were created on an iPad? How many writers use an iPad as their main computer? On and on. So I pointed it out. Cheers!

You are mistaken. He said:

It’s just a big toy is all these are imo. I won’t be spending a grand on a big toy anymore till they do.

You are imagining things. He did not say that it could not be used for any professional use. He indicated that "he" could not use it seriously. Just because some people can use it in their workflow, doesn't mean that everyone can. For the people who cannot, it's not a professional device. It does not mean they are stuck in the past. There's an entire world out there that is professional, which the iPad cannot meet the needs of.

For them, they have no professional use for it, and would be validated in thinking it's a toy.

Sure, there may be certain applications that don’t run on an iPad (or Mac) that limit some “pros” from using an iPad. But this continued fallacy that Pros can’t use an iPad is simply wrong. I have no issue producing professional documents in both Word and Pages, or Excel and Numbers. “Professional” documents are generally typed in only several fonts. So while the iPad doesn’t run the fully bloated Word, and have all 50 type-styles of “wingbats” font, most “professionals” don’t give a (choice expletive here). I can Run my Nikon from it, show clients images instantly, generate invoices, take payments - etc. yes, I have a keyboard (also not included on a Surface Pro). I like that it is NOT included because I can choose the one of countless options, that I want. And people who don’t desire one aren’t stuck paying for a useless peripheral. If an iPad doesn’t work for your professional needs, that’s cool. But I fly a $150 Million aircraft with an iPad Pro daily for a Fortune 500 Global Airline. And for the record, our effort to use the “pro” alternative with full windows failed. So stop with the lame label of “Pro” or “not Pro”. You merely demonstrate your personal ignorance of how other users on here conduct their professional lives.

Price is saddening! These aren’t just incremental increases. This is not the way to fix possible profit margin losses, if there even are any. Making people frustrated with your brand probably doesn’t help retain brand loyalty. But of course, they are sexy devices.

I am a professional that can use an iPad professionally. x-evil-x is a professional that can't use an iPad professionally. No where did he say or insinuate that "no one" could use an iPad professionally. You're all just projecting.

Again. “These are just toys” is an ignorant statement. And again, I never said, unlike the poster that there are professionals who the iPad won’t be the right tool for. I think I made valid points about the absurd opinion that the iPad Pro is just a toy. Tell that to the professional photogs, artists and writers who use it as their main device everyday. To me, what the poster said is as absurd as if I were to say laptops or desktops were toys. Okay, lol. I’m done.

They just announced an sd card adapter for it, so it sounds like a software limitation. I expect them to integrate external storage into the Files.app in iOS 13.

Have you read all the threads? I didn’t quote “x-evil-x”. I’m referring to the numerous “not for pros” or “not a pro device” - or “can’t be pro without Mac OS” . Remarks about “not Pro” or “not for pro” abound.

They have bifurcated the line. The regular iPads now support pencil, so they are more capable for “Everyperson” use, while the pros are now firmly in the “MacBook replacement” territory.

I don't really understand why these are so expensive. There's no crazy revolutionary new tech here.. FaceID maybe? Is it that expensive?

So you were speaking irrelevantly. Cool.

I’m a bit surprised by the benchmarking against laptops and consoles.
It’s like they’re preparing us for Macs with ARM chips. They spent a lot of time telling us how their mobile chip is more powerful and faster than the regular laptop or even console graphics. The next step would be: “you know our mobile chip is already on par or better, well here’s our desktop/high end chip: it blows everything away”
I’m curious how they’re gonna do it and whether they will be able to pull it off.
Microsoft tried and failed a couple of years ago, didn’t they?

I really thought they might put an ARM chip in the new MacBook Air today. Guess we are still a couple years away from that happening. But supposedly that is the plan.

Faceid, new screen tech (same as iPhone XR), laptop-level CPU, more and faster RAM, etc.
