Pro means something when there is a cheaper alternative available

Exactly. Whilst the cheaper alternative is not yet unveiled they're intentionally referring to this model as "Pro" because they're trying to communicate that there will be something cheaper than this $3500 unit at some point in time. Maybe the glasses will be referred to as Vision Air or something lol.

So, I still can't comprehend what this thing is designed for? It's obviously not for gaming. Then for what? To replace your monitor and TV?

A lot of trolls in here going to be eating some serious crow if this thing takes off.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m as skeptical as anyone else but I don’t ever want to doubt Apple as they’ve had several successful product launches in the past when people thought they’d flop.

I’m bookmarking this thread in my MacRumors folder for future reference! 😆

There's always going to be people buying Apple products no matter what they put out but it's not going to be the next big thing. Not until true AR can be achieved.

Are you honestly denying that Lisa brought Macs into the world? Or that the Newton was not the inspiration for every PDA that followed it? Which in turn led to PocketPC, the first smartphones from Nokia and Windows Mobile, the complete mess they created with it all making it impossible for an average consumer to pick up and use for anything meaningful like playing music or getting directions? I used to have to freaking drag Microsoft Streets and Trips files into the file system of Windows Mobile just so I could export directions into the maps for that GPS to function. iPhone came along there and just really made all of this stuff look like complicated garbage...and I'm seeing that here again today.
Nokia's first smartphones (Do you refer to the early clamshell Communicator line? Or the keypad N9x/N8x series? The E series?) had absolutely nothing in common with the Newton. Heck, the Symbian dialpad phones didn't even have a touchscreen...

It's hilarious because even Android forums are full of people who are hating on Apple. Do they not get that they are practically peeing into the wind at this point?
Seethe and cope lol. I know *I* spend none of my time on Android/Samsung/Google forums trying to convince anyone their products are inferior. 😏

Apple Vision Pro is designed for all-day use when plugged in, and up to two hours of use with its external, high-performance battery.

I thought I'd misheard this. Can somebody explain? Two hours...?! That sounds like a joke, right?

The weirdest part of the presentation to me was when it showed that guy sitting on a couch looking at a 3D photograph of his wife and child. It looked like the beginning of an action movie reminiscing about his dead wife and child who were murdered by the mob or something. Probably should have put him on a plane or a train.

Holy crap I got the same sensation. Like wouldn't you just want to be hanging out with your kids in real life? I don't know, when I'm old and grey looking at my kids on 3d/VR is probably going to be too sad if they actually aren't there. I'd rather have them come over and break out a photo album or videos.

Really, that's what gets me most. Are they this unfulfilled that they're off disparaging products they don't like? Or are they being paid to be here? That is probably most likely.

Next year will be worth less than half the price and in 5 years ... well sell it for 200 euros or so.
I don't see that - far too many motors, sensors, glass and lenses. It has an M2 also. Plus it is custom fitted.
This is a remarkably complicated device and is going to be very difficult to reduce in cost.

Looking through a screen is still AR - as Microsoft did with Hololens. Your definition of AR is inaccurate.

Screen as in a display. The litmus test is if you can see through the device with your own vision. That's not the case with this so it's not AR but VR.

Great tech, applaud Apple for trying to push this forward so early on. But, it’s just increasing isolation. Don’t really think it’s great for human interaction. Wall-E style, sure.

Apple pretty much invented the smartphone space so consumers eyes would be glued to their products, so the Vision Pro doesn't really surprise me much. It's all about stimulating those Dopamine receptors.

I agree in the broad definition these are AR. My question is, will you be able to manipulate fine details while looking through these...Could you cook? Could you paint a plastic model? Could you do these tasks while seeing a video of instructions floating in the air??? I am not so sure....There will be some delay...I think this means they are AR...but there can be something better....maybe...

And I've worked at home, mostly alone for about 25 years. It's how I work best. There's no one "right" way for any style of work. If it isn't for you, great! But you are not me, and there are many people who need to work in isolation (I write philosophy, for example. Not a lot of team work in my line).

I do enjoy working from home once a week, I’m a mechanical engineer so collaborating is a daily demand though. I couldn’t go back to doing it full time though, but glad it suits you obviously.

Can you elaborate on “does less”?

As to the social impact, yea that’s gonna be a problem, but isn’t the whole gaming VR crowd basically proud of embracing that? This is a problem that only Apple has for some reason?

10 years from now this stuff will be regular glasses, this is how we get there
The average consumer buys these kinds of headsets for immersive 3D games and online social experiences - not watching them on a fake AR television in front of you, but actually being in these worlds. VisionPro though is essentially an iPad strapped to your face for general computing, focused on passthrough/AR. Nothing they showed made me think, "Oh this is definitely better than just using my iPhone, PC, or TV". The Quest 2 is significantly cheaper and handles both scenarios to some extent.

And then there's just the overall contradictive nature of the whole presentation that really rubs me the wrong way. I'm supposed to believe this is a headset designed for a real family-oriented person with a deep photo library of family memories, but they're going to sit in a room with this strapped to their head and watch entire movies alone?

I don't think VR/AR is the end of society, but with something like the Quest 2 at least, you can jump in and play mini golf, bowling, whatever with friends who have the headset. I didn't see any use cases like that here, even in the unlikely scenario that you know multiple people who own this thing. I certainly think this tech will make more sense when they can shrink it down into a normal pair of glasses that you can wear anywhere (probably at least 5-10 yrs away, like you said).
