A screen update to the iPad Air would be interesting since Apple doesn’t typically update that model yearly. I just got the 4th gen iPad Air this year, and I’d hate to be tempted to upgrade so early. 😜 [Alas, such is tech…]

So maybe I should just wait til next yr before I trade in my 2018 ipad pro to get the new one..I dont want blooming, the more I see it the more weird it looks, maybe in person its different but not sure why they just didnt go OLED this yr would have saved apple the hassle
Definitely wait for OLED

I wouldn’t. I spend a lot of my work day with the same windows open and I’d be constantly paranoid about burn-in. As unlikely as it is and with Apple 100% not covering it (certainly not beyond year 1) I’d still be worrying about it all the time. With mini LED, I wouldn’t have to worry about it at all.

At first the blooming bothered me because everyone was talking about it and I tested it in these unrealistic working conditions that they mentioned (black screen, brightness way too high, pitch black room) and sure enough, I saw blooming. Then I realized that nobody works in those conditions. So I tested it under more realistic, normal conditions and guess what: it’s a non problem.
That's a good point. And I don't have a lot of experience with mini-led so maybe it's also less of an eye strain than LCD.

Definitely wait for OLED

U think next yr at this time Apple will announce an OLED iPad Pro 12.9 inch? Wonder how come they just didnt come out with it this year I mean they knew about the whole blooming thing and people would complain about it why put in a screen that they knew would have issues?

Ipad Air 5th Gen with A15 bionic, OLED screen and the same Power button Touch ID from the Air 4, for £579, oh yes please. Ill trade in my older Air 3rd Gen and pay the rest.

It's beyond me how the iPad Pro got the mini-LED, but supposedly the cheaper iPads might get OLED. OLED is easily the better technology.
It’s not though. It’s worse in every way but pure blacks.

Worse color accuracy, burn in potential, colours loose vibrancy over lifetime (pixels dim over time).

But I’m sure you knew all that since you know better than Apple’s engineers, right? Sourcing an OLED panel in 12.9” would be easy. There’s a reason they went out of their way to develop mini.

Imagine the uproar if 2022 iPad Pro got OLED. If you follow tech you already knew mini-LED is a side grade trading off one set of issue with elevated black for another set of issues with blooming, border shadow and higher cost.

Wishful thinking but I'd like to see a lower cost ~$600 iPad Mini Pro 16GB/256GB with OLED, M1 and MacOS that I can plug into external display/keyboard/mouse and get full desktop OS.

What blooming? I haven’t noticed anything at all. I’m also not looking for it. I just enjoy my first iPad ever and it’s incredible. Some people just need to look for the negative things in life. I’m keeping this iPad for a long time. I don’t need to upgrade every single year.

What a rip, apple tricked everyone into getting the sham mini-LED technology, then flips the table with OLED.

smh
Not really. They’re likely going to adopt OLED in the cheaper iPads, and slowly trickle down the line. Leaving mini-LED in the pro models.

comparing my 12 to my new iPad 11, screen seems the same maybe better on the iPad to me... maybe my eyes suck who knows. but apple has always had wonderful LCD screens. have to wonder if OLED is really more noticeable on larger screens, like 48" or higher TV's

Confirmation bias is strong. There are numerous creators that have noticed and shown the blooming. Wether or not you care is different. Just pointing to the same video from one source as “proof” it doesn’t exist is silly. Seems convenient to use said video as “proof” while ignoring the others.

Interesting move. mini-LED has some good things about it but so does OLED. Apple needs to pick a side. I'm sure micro-LED is the end goal but that's too expensive right now.
My bet, the iPad mini gets OLED. Large iPads like iPad Pro/Air are used way too much like laptops, which means you leave content on the screen for long periods of time, subjecting them to a lot of burn-in potential.

Wow that's something I definitely want. Mini-led blooming gate is not looking good. While an proven cheaper tech like OLED would avoid that. And tell me when was the last time your iPhone OLED screen burned-in, you would likely replace your iPad before that could happen!
There is higher risk of burn in with iPads than iPhones and watches. iPads are used more for work and games which means they can be on for very long periods with persistent UI elements on the screen. Probably the same reason why apple hasn’t used oled in their mac displays (also price). Most people probably still won’t have burn in issues, but at the volumes that apple sells their devices, even a small percentage of devices with burn in would be significant, and would probably get them a class action lawsuit.

Want to know what Apple is going to do with the IPP? They have already told us.

Apple has clearly positioned the IPP has a content creation device with it 2TB SSD. M1 chip and 16gb ram. You don't need that for viewing- that is in an Ipad Air's sweet spot. And Apple for their Pro XDR 32in creation/reference display which is already out for $5k+ is LCD with local dimming- not LED. That alone kinda shoots down the LCD with local dimming is cheaper than OLED display. Both the $5k Pro 32in content creation display, and IPP target market and other creation reference monitors use LCD with local dimming- not OLED.

Heck, today you can get a 4k OLED 77in TV for around $3k+. Yet, they compared the Pro XDR 32in $5k+ to a creation $30K 32in reference monitor. And guess what? The $30K Sony 32in reference monitor is LCD dual layer devices that is essentially local dimming at the pixel level using a 2nd LCD panel Point is both Sony and Apple did NOT use OLED, And for Sony the choice to not use OLED is certainly not cost. You can go to BB right now an buy a 2021 Sony 77in OLED TV 4k for $3500.

Want more evidence- the IPP min-led display just happens to have the same specs a the $5k+ Pro XDR 32 in display- just with even more local dimming zones. Interesting....

And for primarily consumption devices like home TVs OLED is great. And such is also one of the target markets for an IP Air with OLED.

Fortunately for us mere mortals on a budget, most of us could go OLED or LCD with great local dimming. Each has it strengths and weakness. Just chose your poison on the weakness carefully and not just one of its strengths.

That would make sense. Maybe the iPad mini redesign.

I don’t think OLED will be for the iPad Pro.

mini-LED:

☀️ Higher contrast ratio
🔆 Higher brightness
🌑 Deeper blacks
🔋 Power-efficient
💣 Less prone to burn-in than OLED
🛡️ Uses inorganic Gallium nitride (GaN), won’t degrade over time like OLED

Much of the above is totally wrong.

OLED is MUCH BETTER CONTRAST RATIO vs mini-LED.
Brightness may be lower.
OLED has MUCH deeper blacks than mini-LED.
OLED is more power-efficent.
mini-LED is less prone to burn-in, but it isn't a concern with modern OLED... no issues with iPhones for example.
There is NO blooming with OLED.

Bottom line? OLED is FAR, FAR superior with deeper blacks, better contrast, and NO blooming. The only reason Apple is using mini-LED is it gets much closer to the quality of OLED vs. conventional LED screens while remaining cost effective when produced in the size of an iPad screen. As soon as Apple can get OLED panels that are cost efficent in iPad size and the quality seen in the iPhones they will switch immediately.

So i think i will skip the planned update for the new ipad pro 11 from 2018 model and wait until next year because it has not also the mini led display.

Not when look at the average amount of days between releases. October/November 2022 or 1st Qtr 2023 might be next.
