Size matters. Samsung sells because they are not afraid to go big
Bigger is better for a phone.
Smaller is better for a tablet.
The iPad mini is outselling the big iPad.
Size is important. You can still hold a 4.8" iPhone with one hand.
They will sell 5 million the first day.
I can't wait!

thats what she said :D

Revolutionary!

Giving **** to competition for making screens that are too large and then making a screen that is too large!

It's the Apple way, brah.

I have a feeling their prime has landed and they will slowly continue on a downward path. Have a seat and relax. It's going to be a beautiful ride. :apple:

Samsung's next huge hit (Galaxy SIV w/5" 1080p screen) WILL force Apple to respond eventually with a bigger screen iPhone too. And Apple needs it as bad as to have truly refreshed iOS 7 this year too or Android will start to be uncatchable on the near future.

I personally have my iPhone 4S on the drawer and have been using Samsung's Note 2 and really fell in love with the huge but perfectly pocketable still 5.5" form factor. There are lots of pluses and just a few minuses...

Common Apple, give people what they want!! :apple:

Perfectly pocketable. sure
What "people"? THe 5 million people who bought the NOte2? Or the dozens of millions of people who bought iphone 4S and iphone5?

True. The majority of people who chose Samsung over Apple was because
a) Carriers push Samsung devices like crazy
b) Price
c) They hate Apple because Iphone is too prevalent. ANd who doesnt like to be "unique".

Screen size doesnt mean jack.

a) Carriers push the iPhone as much as far as I'm concerned.
b) Price between an S3 and an iPhone aren't very dissimilar at all, subsidized.
c) Neither Apple or Samsung phones make you unique. Both are mass market options with huge sale numbers.

I would buy if they bumped up to 4.8 HOWEVER
I dont think this rumor is true. Look how long it took them to go from 3.5 to 4. And now you're saying half a year later another MAJOR screen bump?

Screen size doesnt mean jack.

Completely anecdotal evidence here, but...

The other day I was at my barber getting my hair cut, and we were comparing our fancy smartphones. I have an iPhone 4, he had a Galaxy SIII. The first thing he said when he checked out the iPhone was "holy crap, what a tiny phone! How do you use that thing"? He then went on to tell me that he chose the SIII due to it's larger screen.

So yeah, some people do like larger screen sizes. Specially when they use their smartphones more than a PC or tablet.

This will all change with the S4 no doubt, rumours already talking about an 8 core SOC, utterly pointless IMO.
...unless you consider such a device the heart of a bigger device (like a Laptop or a small/medium desktop machine), which you can take with you when you leave. No more data sync and its related problems, as all relevant (i.e. personal and current project) data is on that single device - laptop and desktop housings becoming glorified interface boxes...

a) and b) Nope. If you live where I live you'll see all the big carriers advertise Samsung EVERYWHERE. WHen the iphone5 first launched and had supply issues, they discounted the s3 or offered more values if customers went with Samsung. It's pathetic. And yet the iphone5 still managed to sell out everywhere.

c) Not when the S3 was first launched. Apparently owning an iphone at the time was too common and owning an ANdroid big ass smartphone was advertised as being "creative and unique".

One number is bigger than the other, therefore I am RIGHT!

Yeah, you need to come up with a better argument there, guy. Appealing to popularity doesn't prove jack crap.

If appealing to popularity doesnt prove jack crap, why should Apple cater to the need of a minority group of users? Why should they labour themselves manufacturing something that will not be as popular as their traditional product? You need to come up with a better persuasion.

Where I live, I see huge billboards for both and prices are the same. Same in the states really, everywhere I've went through.

What is this mystical land you live in ? What carriers are you talking about ?

Sure and when the iPhone 5 first launched, there weren't a lot of people with them. That doesn't mean squat, both models are mass market options.

Do we even know if this is true ? Apple doesn't announce anything until Wednesday, does anyone even have a source showing the iPad Mini outsells the regular iPad ?

Or are people just making stuff up, hoping to be right.

Of course people make up stuff. I personally think iPad Mini _might_ have outsold iPads in the Christmas quarter, because of people waiting to buy one, and Christmas presents for kids. I wouldn't expect the same in any of the following quarters.

Until Apple puts a phone in the iPad Mini and blows Samsung out of the water :D First 7.9" iPhone!!!!

Steve Jobs would turn around in his grave if he thought Apple was going to release a 4.8 inch iPhone.

This is the silliest iPhone rumor to date. Not going to happen.

Perfectly pocketable. sure
What "people"? THe 5 million people who bought the NOte2? Or the dozens of millions of people who bought iphone 4S and iphone5?

YES it is a perfectly pocketable device, at least for men...
BTW your Note 2's sale figures are a bit far off aren't they?
Last time I checked there are already around 10 million Note 2's sold since its launch a couple of months ago - not too bad for a top tier innovative (a la old-times Apple) device if you also consider in the mix the +30 million Galaxy S3's sold so far.
Don't get me wrong I LOVE APPLE :apple: and own a pretty good mix of Apple products (iPhone, iPad, Macbook, Apple TV) but from an unbiased point of view unfortunately I see current Apple as less and less innovative and pretty much just doing small updates each year to their lineup of products - the iPad Mini was a perfect example of that - little innovation, just pretty much a reponse to Google's successful Nexus 7.
Hopefully Apple will find again its way and amaze us all with new and truly fantastic products in the nearby future - at least that's what I wish anyway...

Sure and when the iPhone 5 first launched, there weren't a lot of people with them. That doesn't mean squat, both models are mass market options.

That mystic land is called Australia. If you go to Telstra's website (biggest carrier in Australia), all you see is Samsung's ads. If you go to Vodafone's website, it's all about Samsung. Also Vodafone AU is the only carrier that doesnt have LTE so they pushed the s3 instead of iphone5. Virgin Mobile offered an extra 1gb of data if customers signed up for s2 and s3.

Sure the iphone5 was new when it was launched. But the iphone brand had already been too popular and hence there's a section of the population who dont want to be using the same thing as other people. They wanted to stand out. The s3 gave them that opportunity.

So then what would Steve Jobs have to say about the ever increasing market trend for bigger smartphone screen sizes? That the world is doomed?
I mean we're talking in the region of dozens of millions of "big" smartphones being sold each year and counting...

lol 4x res for a .8" change? no

Why not, Its the simplest solution to it. They are not going to do some off odd resolution that messes things up. They are not going to keep it at the same resolution because then you wouldn't have "Retina".

@4x is the most likely option. And its a lot more space then just .8" change.

Not sure where have you been living in the past 4 months but the iphone is 4 inch big now. And the next s4 is already rumored to have a 5 inch display. Good luck putting it in your pocket.

It's a stretched 3.5, whatever.

Oh ANd on behalf of Apple: good bye and good riddance.

Did I say I'm going to stop using Apple products? The iPad mini is by far the best tablet on the market and I plan to buy one as soon as it goes Retina. Funny, that iPad mini. A screen size that was originally derided by fanatics such as yourself as neither fish nor fowl, all because St. Steve said the 10" is the perfect size.

Also, you joined a week ago, I've been here since 2006. Don't presume to tell me where to go.

Yet another one who mistakes screen size for innovation.
ANd responding to the nexus7 meant Apple is running out of innovation? Why dont you talk about the fact that ANdroid tablets failed to compete with the ipad hence Google had to take the initiative and released and super cheap tablet following Amazon's success w the kindle. Not sure who is responding to whom.
And PS the ipad mini craps on the "innovative" nexus 7 running 4.2.

And to repeat a point i have stated here one of the MAJOR reasons why the s3 was such a hit was because carriers and retailers around the world pushed the s3 to leverage against Apple. Otherwise the sales number is gonna much lower.
