When Steve Jobs was there, apple used to bring new trends and dictate terms. People bought what he said was right. Not the other way around. Apple never used to build devices from suggestions made by people.

When Apple lost Steve, so did the power they had over the people...

They just need someone with the balls to be confident. How difficult can it be, really? Hell, I'm up for the job if Apple is willing to hire me!

God no, my 4S fits nicely in my pocket , any bigger and you would need a handbag...oh sorry manbag to carry it

I think this "but it won't fit in my pocket" spiel is starting to get a little played out.

I usually wear fairly nice fitting, snug pants, yet I've still got tons and tons of room left in my pocket when I pop my iPhone 4 in there. I could easily fit something the size of a Galaxy S3 in there without feeling too crowded.

I mean really...

The S3 isn't that much bigger.

Yeah... but some trends don't last 5 years.

The iPhone had a 3.5" screen for 5 years.

The job sounds easy enough... you'd just have to make sure the iPhone has a 4" screen for the next 5 years.

Well look... Apple isn't the leader in smartphones sales... Samsung is.

Apple isn't the leader in smartphone platform market share either... Android is.

Those two data points alone place Apple in 2nd place. However... it's a strong 2nd place.

In the last 4 quarters... Apple's least selling quarter was only 26 million iPhones. The thing is... those are phones that start at $450 (but the bulk of iPhone sales are $650 and above)

Apple really does sell a ridiculous amount of phones considering they only sell mid to high-end phones.

There will always be people who "defend" Apple. But the truth is... they aren't going out of business because of their "silver medal" status.

Honestly... people should be more worried about the 3rd place company ;)

And yet Apple has about 60-70% of the profits of ALL phones being sold
while Samsung spends 10x what Apple does on advertising.

Personally I see Samsung as a bigger threat to Google than Apple, they have the numbers to open their own App Store, perhaps partner with another search provider, Fork Andriod, call it "droid" there is prior art in Starwars to stop litigation.

Oh I know. When I said Apple is in 2nd place I wasn't being negative about it :)

There are just some people who insist that Android is "winning" because of market share.

I don't follow that logic. I'd rather Apple be an extremely profitable/successful 2nd place... instead of pumping a ton of garbage phones into the market to raise their market share.

Who cares as long as they release it!
iPhone Max or iPhone XL sound good ;)

Right... who cares what this is called. Apple needs to compete in all the segments for their phone business. In terms of memory, speed, multitasking, and screen size. People wants choices. The iPhone has been regimented into a never ending series of minor speck bumps for way too long. This is a Jobsian albatross that Tim Cook would do well to cast off.

Bring multiple product tiers:

Low 4 inch 3G (8, 16, 32)
Mid 4 inch LTE (32, 64)
High 4.8 inch LTE (64, 128, 256)

maybe market it as a game portal / phone

anyone seen OUYA and gamestick? they are upcoming android game consoles.... instead of just release a me-too samsung like phone, perhaps market an 4.8 inch phone as game portal and/or controller and release apple tv 3 to work in conjunction for games...

Perhaps that's the difference between coasting and investing in the future.

Be sure to dump AAPL before the teens decide that Apple isn't cool anymore....

The Samsung ad with the guy holding a spot in the Iphone line for his parents was priceless. And quite possibly where the market is going ("Iphones are for people with white (or coloured) hair").

I hope they don't give in to the "ours is bigger" garbage that Samsung has started with the screens. It's a phone, not a tablet or notebook. There may be some benefits to a larger screen, but it's getting to the point that it is ridiculous.

The pocket argument is invalid.

I can put a note 2 in my dress shirt pocket or my pants pocket with no problem.

Phones are still pocketable

There's a strong tendency by the naysayers to make up a plethora of excuses to bash Android.

Should this rumor about a 4.8" iPhone code named "math" turn out to be true, the hypocrites will immediately stop bashing larger phones and knock themselves out to praise Apple.

Me? I'll be thrilled and pre-order the moment they're released. It's been a very, very long wait.

This is good picture, it gives you understanding what 4.8 inch iPhone would look like. In terms of overall size, S3 is actually not that big. However, its also wider. So I am wondering if iPHone 6 gonna wider as well or keep 16/9 ratio, I would prefer older ratio.

No, just no. No no no no no, NO. Buy an android device, please. Stop making it sound like bigger screens are a necessity. THEY are not. this is simply a matter of taste. If you want a bigger screen, buy a phone with a bigger screen. This does not mean apple has to do the same, and I hope to god they don't.

So you think you are still OK with a 3.5" screen in year 2022 or 2032?

Sorry but I put my One X into my jeans' side pocket no problem at all everyday:p

I sometimes also put my iPT5 into that side pocket, and I don't feel my One X is going to tear my jeans off.

Yeah Baby, yeah! Bring on iPhone JUMBO that'll be hot! Just for the people that like to walk around with Flinstone sized smart devices. Even though I'm fine with what the 5s will be some people NEED bigger, maybe it's to compensate for something I don't know to a large extent it doesn't matter there are a lot of people that want jumbo smart devices so Apple should just serve that market segment.

Then please explain how Porsche have released pretty much the same car, (911), for 30 years running?

Please don't forget Porsche also released Panamera and Cayenne to cater to people's needs in cars.
Why apple can't release a bigger iPhone to cater to people's needs in phones?

Again with the "If you want something Apple doesn't have, get an Android, don't wish for Apple to get it"

If everyone thought like you did Apple would never improve the iPhone.

Because copying Samesung and going with a bigger screen = innovation?

How about overhauling iOS and focusing on innovation with software?

...We already have enough screen ratios to worry about. Unless this is a painless thing for developers, I don't think Apple will be stupid enough to hurt its app developers.

Android is like the Amazon jungle with no standards what makes you think two iPhone sizes is going to push developers away into the amazon?

4.8" screen iPhone is a good news

Apple is going to release a 4.8" screen iPhone. It's a good news to consumers, and Apple can get more business too.

For those old iPhone customers who don't like a big screen iPhone, they don't have to upgrade, less junks going to landfill is good, help save the earth.

Not a good move, IMO, but then again, Apple has been consistently drifting away after Jobs' absence of vision and direction, so am not really surprised. Job strongly believed in providing "one" solution. Apple's success is contributed heavily to simplicity and "one" played a huge role in it. Multiple sizes is deviation from his philosophy and Apple will continue to decline, as reflected by it's share prices as well.

Innovation not only means to achieve different goals but also means to achieve the same goal in different ways.
5"screen isn't something innovative, but to achieve that by using flexible screen or other innovative ways can make it a innovation.

Why all the nerd rage about a big iphone option?

If you don't want a 4.8" iphone, DON'T BUY IT.

If apple makes a low cost, non-retina iphone (for developing countries), DON'T BUY IT.

it is funny how the apple fanatics here are having strokes over the thought of a 4.8 inch iphone when they were just few months back complaining when a 4 inch screen was announced for iphone 5. they kept on saying say a 3.5 inch screen was big enough. yet they were first in line to get the iphone 5.

you jokers will be the the first in line for that 4.8 iphone as well.

you should be be happy they are getting iphones are getting bigger screens. a lot of people do want phablets nowadays. had apple came out with this phone math back in october i might have picked that up instead of a note 2.

do you honestly think Jobs wouldn't approve of this. Jobs like all all CEO's are worried about make the loot. You have a very idealistic view of Job's practices. Apple would still be on a decline whether Jobs were here or not.

That man was a genius. But do not think he was different from any other leader of company. Leaders of companies have one main objective which is to make money.

Steve jobs said they wouldn't add video to ipod because no one would watch movies on a tiny screen. Then ipod video came out. He even said that tablets would fail because people want keyboard. Now we got a whole line of ipads. and the contradictions go on.

and how do you know what his vision was. maybe he would see the necessity of creating variation among iphones due to the shift of the consumer demands.

I agree. Sometimes I go to lunch with iPad3 and iPhone 4s. I am thinking of buying current mini to reduce weight I have to carry; iPhone is too small for reading comfortably. If Apple would release not 4.8 but even 5.5-6 inch phablet, I would be ok with that and would probably like to buy it. As for copying Samsung - well, great artists steal ideas and that was a motto of Steve. He had a plenty of original ideas, but also made a lot of things inspired by others - such as computer GUI, for example and there is nothing to be ashamed of. You can't be only innovator in the world, period, there times when you have learn things from others experience and adapt them for your needs.

As its saying, move where pack is, phablets and larger phones are dictated by increased mobility and having one device instead of 2 is what Apple always cared about - the consumer's experience. So it be, big iPhones are future.
