In my opinion you bought one of the best of the M1 devices if it was the 8CPU 8GPU. A lovely little machine for the money. I was blown away how good it was and the m1 Mac mini. Was less than impressed with the M2 devices thus far, but happy to be proved wrong. So I wouldn't be too downhearted at your purchase.
Yes. I'm actually fairly relaxed about the possibility it'll be obsoleted tomorrow, because I didn't buy it for its performance. I already have a M1Pro MBP for performance. I bought this one because it's pretty. (that is: can sit on a table in the living room for the sort of things I might do there, and not make the place look like an office.)

M2 would have a MediaEngine on board, M1 doesn't; that's probably the only performance change that might alter how I'd have used it. (Might actually have used it for some video transcoding.)

(And yes, I got the middle spec. At the consumer end, Apple tend to over-compromise the base spec. But the reseller discount brought it *almost* down to the price of the base spec from Apple anyway.)

I hope the standard configuration models have more than the minimum ram across the board, like they do now. Right now every ram upgrade is a BTO. This means no retailer discounts near end of life, such as we are seeing now at Amazon for the M1 MacBook Pros.

"MacRumors can corroborate an announcement is expected to take place this week."

"The announcement could be one of several products expected in the near future, including updated MacBook Pros and Mac mini models."

"rumors suggest"

"MacRumors has also learned Apple will hold briefings later this week with members of the press and media on the new devices ahead of review embargoes for the new products lifting next week."

A.k.a. Macrumors already knows that there'll be minor updates to the MBPs and Mac mini tomorrow - getting the M2 SoC - but they are under embargo so they have to spin it that way.

Ive just noticed something, Apart from the new m2 MBA and m2 mbp non of the other Macs say new.... but look, the old M1 Pro and max 14 and 16" says new!...

Interesting. Can anyone confirm if this is unusual/new?

The US site doesn't show that (though today is MLK Day). Somebody running the UK site may have jumped the gun.

The US site www.apple.com shows that but sorry to say that it's not new. Even back in November you could still see that. Just go to web.archive.org and paste the URL https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/16-inch-space-gray-10-core-cpu-16-core-gpu-512gb. It looked like that on Nov 10th.

There's no way they would release M2 Pro/Max without an event. The only Mac that would get a silent update would be Mac Mini/iMac M2 since there wouldn't be much to talk about.

Introducing .... the Apple I, at a price of just $666.66. Welcome to July, 1976.

These days, $666.66 buys you a supercomputer in your pocket! Now if only Apple would bring back grid computing... their entire customer base could become one giant computer!

Back in 2020 you could only get M1 in a portable at $999.
Then in 2021, you could get M1 in a portable at $799.
Now Apple’s cheapest M1 portable is $599.
This thought that Apple will never sell a pro chip under $1999 is based on nothing.
In 2021 an M1max anything would set you back $3400.
Now, you can get it for $1999 in the Mac Studio.
Absolutely no reason that apple won’t lower the price of entering into a M2pro chip.
Especially since they can push their $1599 display on you, since the Mac mini doesn’t have one.
Likewise, the Mac mini doesn’t have a 120 Hz mini LED display built-in, the Mac mini doesn’t have six speakers, the Mac mini doesn’t have a keyboard, the Mac mini doesn’t have a mouse.
It’s not like Apple’s really lowering the price here.
Also, keep in mind that an M2pro Mini would still have several weaknesses compared to the studio.
Worse heat management, less ports, I don’t think you understand why the product would do so well for Apple.
Instead of selling you a $1999 laptop, they can sell you on a $1500 computer, a $1600 display, a $150 keyboard and a $150 trackpad.

Spec bumps in Apple Silicon won't happen so easily, as it is a system on a chip. Won't happen IMO.
What exactly would you call the A12Z, M1 and M2 iPad Pros if not spec bumps?
Better question, what do you call the 13 inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro M2? It’s literally identical to the M1 in every single way, except for the processor.

The iMac needs some love and attention.

Agreed. I thought one of the major reasons for moving to their own custom silicon was to not be stuck to Intels roadmap and we'd see more frequent updates, yet the iMac after a lot of fanfare has been left to languish

Literally every argument here is poor.
1. We're not talking about old trickle down products. We're talking about a yet to be release brand new product. No M2 Pro is going to debut in a $1499 box.
2. Who is it going to sell to? Anyone who might buy it would also buy a Studio or a MBP. Apple isn't going to lose money on those purchases just because.

Are you referring to this? How come Apple Polishing Cloth is not sold out yet?

Sorry guys if the price of the cloth goes up tomorrow. Not my fault. 😣

View attachment 2143069

Quite an investment really! It's why I took out AC+ on my cloth. Off course not overly pleased that one only gets a refurbished cloth when claiming, especially with the overly reported lintgate. Oh for fluffs sake
;)

That's not Apple's fault, though. Goldman was desperate to break into the consumer credit market, gave Apple preferential terms, and didn't do a good job underwriting credit. That said, the savings account is likely part of the fix for Goldman. The type of customer interested in a savings account (particularly now that rates are rising) is also likelier to spend more consistently and pay off monthly, generating interchange revenue without the credit losses.
Yes it's weird. Why are people who should easily get approved get denied? And the other weird thing for me is like I've seen with a few other cards. Do an outside app and get denied, but when I did the app during an order, I got approved

M2 Mac mini is a given. M2 Pro Mac mini is not happening. Pricing doesn't work. Apple isn't going to let Pro Apple Silicon out the door for less than $1999.
Agree 100% because of how Apple always avoids cannibalizing sales of older products (unless they are no longer sold on apple.com when the new one launches):

Sales of both M1 MBA, M2 MBA and 14" MBP would suffer dramatically if Apple cannibalized these Mac by launching sub $1999 M2 Pro mini.

Who'd buy an M1 MBP or M1 Max Mac Studio at $1999+ if you could get an M2 Pro equipped Mac mini at for something between $699-$1999?

In this economy??!?! (sorry, I had to🤣)

To avoid interferring with Mac Studio, M1 MBA, M2 MBA and M1 Pro 14" MBP sales, a M2 Pro mini would have to start a good bit above $1999 for the base configuration. That doesn't make sense when consider the usual array of ports, cooling, RAM configurations, etc., of previous minis.

The $1999 step on the Mac price/value ladder belongs to Mac Studio and MBPs, not Mac mini. Mac mini is sub MBA M2 pricing and will be spec'ed accordingly.

Yes, we consumers would benefit tremendously from a sub $1999 M2 Pro equipped mini. I'd pre-order it this instant.

But what are the odds that Apple is going to disrupt and make a healthy portion of its best-selling Macs semi-obsolete?

The next mini is at best going to be an M2 MBA "in a box, with more ports and better cooling", just like the M1 mini was to the M1 MBA.

Hooray for minor spec bumps.

Hooray for version 2.0 of devices for people who never buy version 1.0 of anything :)

I have plenty of customers and, even some family members, ready to buy. They don't want big changes, more V1.0 devices.. They WANT v2.0 Mac minis and MBPs..

Hooray for hopefully a Mac mini with more ram and storage options.

Hooray for some WiFi 6E for people in crowded wifi environments. Have some snowbird customers who live in condos who will find that a very welcome addition if it happens.

This is a good thing.

If it's .. you know.. real, and not iPhone Socks.

Or watch bands.

To avoid interferring with Mac Studio, M1 MBA, M2 MBA and M1 Pro 14" MBP sales, a M2 Pro mini would have to start a good bit above $1999 for the base configuration.

The problem ain't selling a base MiniM2Pro at $1699, the problem is that that won't leave enough room for BTOs (2 steps of unbinning and 16-32GB) without going over the base MacStudio price.

Selling it below $1699 will cut into the BTO options for a M2Mini so that is also not gonna happen.
