Damn these rumors! I wanted to buy the new flagship iPhone in September but looks like 2020 will be the year I upgrade my Apple gear across the board.

Still rocking a 7 Plus and 2016 15” MBP. 2020 is looking like the right year to upgrade. Notch less iPhone and all new 5th gen MBP. And maybe 5G antenna as well.

I wonder if that’s why they are taking out 3D Touch. It would make sense if they are really trying to get the under the screen fingerprint tech in, they would want to remove that other bit of screen tech for 3D Touch...

I'm sure it's a potential factor, though it's more likely they're removing 3D Touch because to have full consistency, they'd have to put that tech in iPads, and non-3D Touch devices already do the same functions by just holding your finger in place.

I do like 3D Touch, but a force press and tap and hold are identical and confusing functions.

I can see Apple having both Face ID and Touch ID for a means of identification that is secure enough for most things. Apple wants to make identification like passports and id digital so having two biometrics would surely help with that.

If only one of the three 2020 iPhones will launch with full-screen fingerprint authentication, which size do we think it will be? I assume it will launch on the largest of the models (6.7 inch), though I'm personally hoping it will be the 5.4 inch model. I have to imagine that Apple will want to maximize profits and launch the feature on their most expensive device in the new lineup. It's sad that we're losing feature parity once more between the large and small iPhones.

And people wonder why iPhones cost so much? All the R&D costs to engineer a fix for a "problem" that doesn't exist! Does the notch or pinhole really bother people that much? I still use my 7 Plus with (god forbid) A BEZEL, and I never even notice it!

How about just reducing the price of the phones so people won't hold on to their phones for 4+ years because iPhones cost >$1000!

Give us top-tier cameras, OLED displays and cut the price!
Enjoy living in dreamland.

No way! Touch id is truly dead! I hated it on the iPhone - it never worked for me! Face I.D. has been incredible!

iPhone 5S/6 or did you own 6S/7/8? Touch Bar MBP/2018 MBA?

I ask because there is a big difference in quality between 1st and 2nd gen Touch ID.

I am talking about the difference between having to wipe down the home button to get it to work indoors and Touch ID always working instantly no matter what.

Touch ID on iPhone 6 wasn’t reliable but Touch ID on 7 Plus and newer is instant and never fails. Same thing with Touch ID on Mac. It always works.

I find it incredibly hard to believe - impossible actually, given what Apple has actually said about Face ID - that they would then throw it out and go back to Touch ID. The Notch sucks, and I doubt Apple is happy with it and wants it there, but I'd bet on Face ID being a permanent part of the iPhone going forward.

Personally speaking I own a new iPad and an iPhone 8 and... I'd rather have Face ID. But I don't like the Notch.

If it’s full screen finger print authentication, I wonder if it’ll be a problem when removing the phone out of the pocket - accidental unlock on the way out...

I find it funny that Apple is more than willing to ditch certain features but others, such as the touch bar, remain despite lackluster sentiment from customers.

but it is certainly starting to sound like the notch might not be around for too much longer.
“too much longer” is relative — it depends on how long one lives.

Couldn't see them dropping FaceID for their high end phones. A retread of the iPhone 8 is supposedly on the development path for 2020 and giving that a full screen front and an underscreen fingerprint sensor etc. to keep costs and price low, I could see that happening.

Have a phone with in screen fingerprint detection (my work phone) and it works well (this is 2nd generation for the tech), but FaceID is easier (you just look at your phone) and almost certainly more secure.

FaceID in a notch-less iPhone? Yes please.

TouchID in a notch-less iPhone? Yes please.

I don’t care which one, but if FaceID is as secure as they say it is, I’d believe they’d be going in that direction.

TouchID is fine, and I guess they could put it in the budget iPhone for different markets. But releasing one before the other is only going to work if it’s FaceID first. 2021 is probably more likely than 2020.

Same here.

Also...there's no way Apple is giving up on FaceId, which is a kind if technology demonstrator/testbed for their AR initiative.
Ya, gotta have those mimojis /s

Best Apple news/rumor in a long time. Now I’m mildly interested in iPhone again. Under screen Touch ID would bring me back. **** Face ID and THE NOTCH.

Apple's sitting on millions of touch bar assemblies in their warehouses in China. They gotta use them until they're gone!
