Know this is off topic but I'm debating should I get a 12.9 inch iPad when the new one comes out or a 4k tv? Random question I know. Torn which one has more usefulness but I have a MacBook pro and iPhone already.

Funny enough (re: the quote you posted), I _do_ actually manage and monitor some significant infrastructure on both AWS and Rackspace from iOS devices :)

I think it's worth clarifying that while I believe "file management" needs improvement, I'd say that a vast majority of users don't need straight up FS access (like you'd see in MacOS/Windows/Linux, with the exception of some kind of developer/advanced toggle).

What needs improvement is the app intercommunication across a centralized file repository. Otherwise there's too much file duplication (leading to version control issues), and it leaves too much of the implementation up to the developer.

I had a recent workflow issue (dealing with scanning/signing/editing/faxing), with two apps from the same developer (who makes outstanding products). The required file IO should've been available through exposure at the OS level, so leaving it to the developer left me having to use a silly workaround.

This is a significant roadblock to music / video content usage, as well.

For example, I like the new macOS "TV" application for streaming video, but only local content synched via iTunes or shared via Home Sharing is accessible - why not a Videos directory that all authorized video players (e.g., Vudu, VLC, etc.) are granted access to, so you can pick your video player, at least for non-DRM material?

Same for music - i love Onkyo's HF Player (so cool to be able to resample content to DSD256 for output via my attached DAC!), but the only way to get content into it is to load it as files via iTunes, and no other music player has access to the files :/ Same for Tidal, Qobuz, etc. There should just be a container for Music, and applications s/b authorized to access it.

I understand sandboxing for active content, but for video and music files?

I agree that a 10.5 iPad is on its way but why make this their 'bezel-less flagship' iPad rather than the 12.9? Apple has historically placed a flagship status on its largest screened devices. Certainly as far as iOS devices go. With this being the case, wouldn't it make more sense to release bezel-less 10.5 and 12.9? Which pro user would sacrifice screen real estate for thin bezels? Style over substance. Thoughts?

This may have been said already, but I think the reason for this is:

They wanted to change the screen size to 10.5 for reasons discussed before about resolution etc. They were able to do that while maintaining the form factor, battery, and power.

I think they will make the 12" iPad bezel free as well but will shrink the footprint down instead of widen the screen. Perhaps losing that much volume would not allow them to maintain battery life and performance yet.

The same thing could be said about battery life and performance if they made the screen bigger on the same footprint, but I'm guessing that is becoming too large for Apple.

Using the iPad 12" already is cumbersome to me. Same screen size on a smaller footprint could make the difference.

Do we have an iPad-specific OS yet? No? [Puts wallet away]
Split screen multitasking, PIP video. What else do you need? Sounds like a MS Surface would suit you just fine.

Please describe what exactly an iPad centric OS would be? (Without describing a surface or a laptop) ....GO!

Happy to say that I just sold my IPAD Pro 9.7 plus pencil for $650. Never really used the iPad like I thought I would. Don't think I can ever give up a MacBook Pro for its power and convenience. I can do whatever I want without compromise. My 2015 MacBook pro is my workhorse.

I think we are way past the time when bigger screen iPads is enough to warrant headlines news or breaking technology. There has to be something more to grab the publics attention than "now it's 10.5 instead of 9.7" big whoop.
Hmmm....interesting since laptops and imacs have been pretty much speed bumps/screen changes most years. What could Apple do to "wow" you?

What about the iMac and Mac Mini? iPad is dead.
Yea iPad is dead. Sells more units than any Mac every quarter with equal revenue.

While DigiTimes believes the 10.5-inch iPad Pro will now see an April debut, the site says the production schedule for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro "still remains unclear" with volume production perhaps delayed until May or June.

While I trust DigiTimes as much as I do a boardwalk fortune teller the chief reason Apple gave for ceasing participation in MacWorld was that it was always rushing to push out product based on these events rather than when the product was actually ready to be released. Thus the move to Events produced and scheduled 100% by Apple.

So I'm confused as to why Apple has events before product is ready to be released. I can understand a one or two week delay to prepare stores, move inventory and, of course, build excitement. But two, three or more months I don't get when you have complete control of the event, and especially now where Apple even controls the venue, unlike when big events were held at sites owned by others.

And in relation to the iPad Pro 12.9 -- does it really require major volume production? It seems to be the most niche of iPads, perfect for certain uses given it's size, but not as a jack-of-all trades tablet, also given its size.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the 10.5 inch. Not sure I'll buy-in unless its spectacular as I have a 9.7 Pro. But this could give us a glimpse of what Apple has in mind for the next iPhone.

Almost 500 days since they've done anything but lower the price on the 12.9 Ipad and they think it's only getting a slight bump? That would be incredibly disappointing.

Apparently you've either never used a "real computer" or an IPad. There is no way these tablets replace computers. Not now, not ever.

Agreed. I'm tired of making this a competition between laptops and tablets. They're different things. They're not meant to replace each other. Some people choose one over the other, some people want both.

DigiTimes doesn't always interpret supply chain information correctly, that's true, but the information is still useful in light of other rumors, which are all solidifying around an imminent release that's set to happen in the next few weeks. When things pick up like this, it typically means we're pretty close to a launch. It's not a sure thing, of course, but it's looking like we'll see new iPads soon.

This is 2017. Nowadays, the way to dismiss information you don't like it to delegitimize each independent source individually, by impugning either its competency, motives or personality. You need to get on-board the current rules of engagement.

someone please convince me why i NEED to upgrade my "new" ipad (3rd gen).

I browse the web. Use a few apps. watch netflix , youtube, etc.

I don't know why they need an event for this. There is literally no need for an event with every spec bump an iPad gets.

A couple things I would like to see include:

- Font management: Easy way for me to install fonts and have them available in all apps. There's a hackish way but I'd like an official supported way.

- Better way to share content instead of making me duplicate documents when I need to use them in multiple apps

Apple is going all in on the iPad yet again - but it consistently lets everyone down.

You simply cannot work on this thing. Multitasking and even simple copy and paste functions are a huge PIA.

AnyFont is... hackish? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

iPad is an entertainment machine, I never saw a person use it for work in my circle.

My wife uses her 9.7" Pro daily for work and absolutely loves it. Traded in her Surface Pro. Said she will take the iPad any day over the Surface which she constantly had issues with. She takes notes, creates sales orders, does inventories, presentations, emails and documents. 100% done on the iPad. She told me the other day she can not remember the last time she had to open her laptop.
