Know this is off topic but I'm debating should I get a 12.9 inch iPad when the new one comes out or a 4k tv? Random question I know. Torn which one has more usefulness but I have a MacBook pro and iPhone already.

It is an odd question only because a 4K TV is more of a fun discretionary buy whereas most people (I think) buy a 12.9 iPad because they are in a graphics or photography related business and it's a work tool.

I have a MBP, iPhone, iPad minis, iPad Pro 9.7. That is where I stopped because the 12.9 serves no need for me. Maybe you have a use for a 12.9 -- like drawing is your hobby, I don't know. Which is my point. We'd have to know why you are considering a 12.9 to evaluate if it would be of real use to you.

My wife uses her 9.7" Pro daily for work and absolutely loves it. Traded in her Surface Pro. Said she will take the iPad any day over the Surface which she constantly had issues with. She takes notes, creates sales orders, does inventories, presentations, emails and documents. 100% done on the iPad. She told me the other day she can not remember the last time she had to open her laptop.

This is the same for one of my best friends, as a teacher she was entitled to a Surface Pro discount (UK not sure if it's the same in the US) she brought one and then regretted it later having multiple issues with Windows, she eventually sold it and brought an iPad Pro for the classroom, she loves it and prefers to use it with the Apple Pencil for the classroom.

My personal experience is similar except I'm not a teacher I'm a writer and I've still found the iPad Pro to be a great way of content creation, I've mentioned in other posts on the forum that tasks I use to solely do on my Mac I can also do on my iPad Pro, the Pencil is very good for drawing and writing in my own hand writing. I'm thinking about getting the Smart Keyboard so that I have a physical keyboard to type on, who knows maybe it will replace my Mac entirely in the near future.

I don't know why they need an event for this. There is literally no need for an event with every spec bump an iPad gets.

That's just it. They do need an event otherwise no one would even know there was a new iPad. They have to manufacture excitement with new trite terms like "tru color" that are technically new features, but ultimately, not game changers.

Also the TV outlets give more attention to products where there is video vs having to pan and zoom a web page. So it gives Apple free advertising at very little cost.

iPad with no bezel will be completely awful to use and makes no sense. iPad is never going to fit in the pocket and needs a bezel so it can be lifted/held.

Please don't make the next smaller tablet any heavier. The weight and balance of the Air 2 and 9.7 inch pro are perfect.

I agree that a 10.5 iPad is on its way but why make this their 'bezel-less flagship' iPad rather than the 12.9? Apple has historically placed a flagship status on its largest screened devices. Certainly as far as iOS devices go. With this being the case, wouldn't it make more sense to release bezel-less 10.5 and 12.9? Which pro user would sacrifice screen real estate for thin bezels? Style over substance. Thoughts?

They want us to buy this 'bezel-less flagship' 10.5 iPad or a minor upgraded 12.9 when they come out soon. Then, they make a bezel-less 12.9 later and some of us will buy as well. They use the same strategy on other products under Tim.

I still consider my Galaxy Note PRO 12.2 to be better as I can also use it as a phone. The iPhone 6s plus's screen is too small for me. With the iPad, I need to bring both iPhone and iPad.

DigiTimes doesn't always interpret supply chain information correctly, that's true, but the information is still useful in light of other rumors, which are all solidifying around an imminent release that's set to happen in the next few weeks. When things pick up like this, it typically means we're pretty close to a launch. It's not a sure thing, of course, but it's looking like we'll see new iPads soon.

Highly respected Mark Gurman is disputing this claim on Twitter, "1) How would a supply chain paper know which hall Apple would hold an event? 2) Apple’s release said the theater is opening “later” 2017"

Until they drastically change the ipad OS my iPads (mini and 3) will continue to be relegated to the drawer, only being brought out to bring along on plane rides and trips as a portable media viewer.

A lighter device with smaller dimensions isn't "style over substance" because portability is a real point of concern. It's not an unreasonable calculation to trade a little bit of real estate for more portability, depending on your needs.

Somehow, this is also my feeling about the rumored "no bezel iPads".
I cursed so many times this PDF reader that jumps to the beginning of the document if it detects a touch at the top of the screen. Really cool when you accidentally let your finger enter the screen area because there is already not so much space to hold it (iPad Airs have a pretty thin bezel already), and jumps to page 1 while you are in the middle of a 1000 pages document...

I feel more and more that the current generation of iPads are essentially hardware that is about ten years in advance compared to the software inside it... and that will be blocked from OS updates in four years (and do not get me started with the "performance issues"; these are the result of a deliberate choice; I have ten years old computers running up to date Linux distros, that still do their job just as well as they did on day 1).

iPad would be for fun no hardcore work or anything

You can pry my real computer, from my cold dead hands.

Amazing! I remember the time when a MacPro was considered king of the hill and a mini or MBA merely toys. Now those are considered real computers? ;)

Do you have a TV now? Do you have an iPad now? Are you primarily using / having constant and easy access to 4K video material?

There is no way these tablets replace computers. Not now, not ever.
Steve Ballmer, is that you?

someone please convince me why i NEED to upgrade my "new" ipad (3rd gen).

I browse the web. Use a few apps. watch netflix , youtube, etc.
Borrow an iPad Air 2 or better (or go to an Apple Store) and use it for maybe half an hour, while holding it in your hand. Then go immediately back to your iPad 3 and do the same. Shouldn't take another half an hour ...

I still consider my Galaxy Note PRO 12.2 to be better as I can also use it as a phone.
... because that is the primary use case for a 12.2 tablet.

Only that you have to bring a headset in addition to your tablet (which makes it 2 items again - on par with the iPad/iPhone combo). Otherwise it'd be a strange view seeing someone holding a 12.2" tablet to his ear.

I know which of both combos I'd prefer ...

Edge to Edge bezel free display... DEFEATS THE PURPOSE. There is a reason that Steve Jobs put a thumb sized bezel on ALL four sides of an iPad. For the most part... Humans use iPads. Humans grasp things with their thumbs. Another counter intuitive, customer unfriendly "innovation" by the "Defeats the Purpose" Company.

Speaking of people who can't grasp things.... Cook and Ive !!!!!

Microsoft Office 365 IS FREE when used on a device with less than 10" display. Right now, I'm using a fully functional Office 365 on my 9.7" iPad.

Office 365 will need subscription on new 10" iPads. Do people realize that?

So ? If you need it, you pay for it. Office is one hell of a great product.

I'm looking forward to the updates to iOS. IIRC at last year's event they made some nice iPad updates and at this year's iPhone event the feeling was 'wait until spring for the iPad updates. :)

I'm sure there will be finger/palm rejection technology so that you can hold it on the edges.

Again, if it is indeed bezel-less, Apple will use finger/palm rejection technology. The benefit of removing the bezel is that you can have a larger screen in a smaller package. I'd think that'd be a welcome feature.

What more can be offered on an iPad. Especially an ipad you can't use as a mass storage device

We don't seem to see pictures of parts anymore (where are the 10.5 iPad shell pics?)
Maybe Apple has finally locked down it's suppliers from sneaking out parts from the factory.
