Apple's new lineup is crippled by having only one type of port, no magsafe etc. A step backward. The Air was pretty much perfect, which is why Apple still have to sell it even though it's old. Microsoft and others are still producing their best machines by copying it's form factor.

Cook is only creating all these iPad sizes because it is seen as his legacy. "Why would you even buy a computer?" he has said. He's desperate for them to succeed. Nobody is taking the tablets anymore though.

Looks wise i could agree, but it's the OS that makes a Mac so much better than any Window's machine and that's not just my opinion a lot of people have said the same thing. To a certain degree i do understand what Cook is saying even if the wording he uses might not always be 100% correct, the iPad Pro can be used as a laptop replacement for some people, But personally i use both, my iPad Pro 12.9" is great when i need to use the Apple Pencil for drawing taking notes or editing photos, my Mac is great for when i want to type document and use a precise point and click. I see the Mac and iPad as working great together instead of choosing one or the other.

Apple's new lineup is crippled by having only one type of port, no magsafe etc. Gimmicks like the Touchbar.
Neither the 12" MB nor the 13" MBP w/o Touchbar, which would be retina successors to the two MBA versions, have a Touchbar.

The Air is still sold because it costs only $999 (for the base model), while the 12" MB costs $1299 and the 13" MBP w/o Touchbar costs $1499. Not because people would get their panties into a bunch having to buy a USB-C to USB-A adaptor.

iPad sales are going downhill so to keep it alive u flood the market with larger-than-large screens ? How will this help exactly ? When they all are going to have the same features one way or another.. There is very little difference apart from performance and screen.

Usually, you could work out based on how better the 13-inch one sold... and how many people favored it over the 9.7"... That's how i always work it out.

The other question is who will actually buy another smart keyboard for the device and the updated Apple Pencil. At this point, they need to start including all accessories in the box when purchasing a device thats no longer popular anymore especially since they want us to pay so much for a device that's not truly "Pro".

Whether a device is Pro or not depends on the user and his computing needs as much as the device. As a teacher, I easily clock more hours using my iPad Pro for work-related purposes than both my Macs combined.

So I guess with your philosophy...a Kindle could be a pro device for that user......sorry but no

We're part of the Mini choir!

This argument I've never understood:

The iPad mini is also being encroached upon by larger and larger smartphones."

The iPad Mini's display area is nearly 2 1/2 times the size of the iPhone 6+ and iPhone 7+!

That's a massive difference and the experience is qualitative different. eBook reading and photography are perfect fits for the Mini. The iPhones are too small and the iPad too big.

Instead of killing off the Mini, they need to improve it with more RAM, brighter display, better camera (plus flash), and multiple speakers on edges!

The point is that in the era of 3.5" and 4" phones, many people might have been able to justify getting an iPad mini on top of getting an iPhone. Those same people getting a Plus iPhone now might conclude that while an iPad mini is still clearly superior for a number of things than their Plus iPhone, the added utility isn't large enough anymore to justify getting two devices.

They are still selling it because the screensize is still quite bigger than the iphone 6/s/7 plus. But when the iphone 8 plus is sold it will have a 6.2 display.
And people assume that in all counties and parts of the world, people have money to buy both an ipad and iphone, suprise: not all people have the money to buy both. They have money for one idevice and choose an all-in one.

Maybe for some "pro" means "designed for pro" instead of "usable for pro work" ?
My pro notebook, at work, is clearly designed for pro use. Sadly, it does not make it a great device.

This. I can comfortably watch movies and browse the web on my 6S Plus. Obviously an iPad is going to be superior, but to be able to just whip out my phone and have a decent sized screen is definitely convenience without needing a 2nd device.

Ditto

I really want a lighter laptop. I would buy an air in a heartbeat. But the lack of retina screen is what's stopping me.
The new 2016 Non-Touchbar 13.3" MBP is the new MBA.
  • Thinner than MBA
  • Same weight as MBA
  • P3 Retina Display
  • 2 full powered TB3 ports
The 10.5" iPad Pro will probably be introduced as the successor/replacement to the 9.7" iPad Pro. Can't see them updating the 9.7" (to the 10.5 screen) without doing the 12.9" at the same time, especially as the 12.9" model is so much older already. The 10.5" should gain the same resolution screen as the 12.9" and as such have the same 364ppi screen as the current iPad mini. So you will get two iPad mini screens in split screen on the 10.5" and two iPad screens in split screen on the 12.9".

I'm starting to be resigned to the fact that these will be the only Pro models. Given this though, it would seem weird to not have a mini model to accompany the new budget iPad. iPad mini and iPad on the low end complimenting and being leveraged elegantly by the two pro models.

The 12.9" Pro would be to the iPad as the 10.5" Pro would be to the iPad mini.

I own the touch bar free MBP and I still find it too bulky. I want something under 3 lbs and slimmer.

Well, factually, the nTMBP is smaller in every dimension than the MBA, and weighs within two hundredths of a kg as well. It has a more powerful and updated processor, better graphics, and far superior i/o potential. From an objective point of view, you were wishing for a 13.3" MBA replacement with retina display, and if we look away from the pricing issue, it seems like this is exactly the machine you were looking for.

If the 12" rMB is too lacking, and the nTMBP is too bulky (even though it is more portable than the MBA as illustrated above) then it seems it will be very hard to get to a machine that will satisfy your particular wishes.

This is an iPad Pro rumour thread though...

I don't think Apple see iPad Pro owners as the main target for the upcoming devices...
Perhaps you won' t have to buy another smart keyboard if you already have the keyboard of the 9.7 ipad pro. Since both the 10.5 and 9.7 ipad pro have the same physical size(rumored), it should fit.

But i hope there will be a new keyboard with some kind of trackpad.

I was hoping to see a new 12.9 at wwdc but I guess if there isn't even any rumors of them making them yet like the 10.5 has then I guess It will be a disappointing wwdc for me. I really want a 12.9 but the one out now is already 2 years old so I don't want to invest in it. That puts a new one at 5 months away by the time they ramp up making them. This sucks..Maybe I will check out that new samsung galaxy book 12 inch with windows on it.

Genuine question: What makes this "pro"? I haven't really used Apple tablets at all (only MBP as my main computer) and I am really trying to work out what people do on these tablets. They don't run full software, do they? Like, it's all iOS stuff.

I am thinking of purchasing the 10.5 iPad Pro when it is released. Use of the word Pro in the model name is pure marketing and most Pro users would still say the iPad Pro is a consumption device. The reason for this is software. It is still running iOS and even though the hardware is tremendous the software still doesn't take advantage of what is the hardware is capable of.

I have watched numerous iPad Pro video reviews on YouTube and I think the second iteration of the Apple Pencil should be far better.

I personally think Apple should make the Apple Pencil work on all iPads as once you get people using the stylus for note taking and other uses the iPad becomes immediately more useful. The fact Apple are making the Apple Pencil a premium device shows they are more interested in keeping the product line up fractured and forcing people to buy the more expensive iPad Pro.

I would have three sizes of iPad Pro and then a cheap iPad and iPad mini with yesteryears processor and limited RAM and storage. Therefore all bases are covered.

I would include an Apple Pencil with each iPad Pro. This will never happen but if you want people to be interested in the tablet market again this would be one way of doing it.

That does not fit in a cargo pocket.
If it had the same footprint as the current mini it would. 8.2" though...ideal isn't really how I would describe it from a technical perspective. Probably lots of scaling issues to do in software and physical pixel size to take into consideration, etc. There are other reasons than form factor for the screen size selection.

Having a Apple Pencil in every ipad device won't cut it for me. They need to integrate that Pencil into the software similar to what Samsung does with the s pen. You know the s pen is a part of Samsung's software instantly with the s pen enabled devices. It nearly forces you to use it if it's there, I can't say the same for the Apple Pencil.

iOS needs to be completely overhauled for the Ipad pro as well. The consumers want a hybrid desktop OSX and mobile iOS interface....then Apple should give them that and price it at the same level as surface pro devices and then surely the IPad Pro "title" will be meaningful. A company nearly worth a trillion dollars should give their customers what they have been asking for and not a dedicated tablet with a "separate" keyboard and "separate" stylus.

I don' t want 2 os' es on an ipad pro.
I want a more flexible, and complex os for the ipad pro instead of IOS, i want a hybrid of both os' es not a hybrid of a macbook and ipad with 2 bootable os' es.
I want one OS, that has the touch gui of IOS , but with more possibilities/flexibilty.

You're all dreaming.

Apple is not going to release an OS that breaks the iOS Appstore-based ecosystem. It's the reason Apple is the trillion dollar company it is. The absolute bread and butter of all bread and butter. That's why you're never going to see an iPad running anything other than iOS. The only reason macOS still exists is because they could never get away with implementing and using the same walled garden system that they were able to create with iOS from the beginning. We all have seen how badly it has gone for the MAS after Apple implemented the same rules for it as the iOS AppStore.

What everyone should all be calling for isn't a different OS, but iPad specific iOS features like an overhauled springboard, perhaps that allows notification centre widgets on the right or left 1/3 of the main screen. Make iCloud work EXACTLY like DropBox does, with full OS integration at the most basic level possible. This would make it effectively a nicely featured accessible file system. Above all, get apps on the AppStore that truly are desktop equivalents, especially in the productivity and creativity spaces. Get full iWork & Office suites on the AppStore (even if they have to be exclusively for iPad Pro) with full desktop feature parity, along with fully featured Adobe CCS apps that are designed with Apple Pencil in mind. All of the sudden you truly do have a professional grade machine on your hands.

I'm probably dreaming too, but my version seems more feasible inside of Apple's business reality.

Those are good reasons, but it's typically described as the Plus iPhones' screen has gotten big enough to *substittue* for an iPad Mini! And, that's hardly the case. The uninitiated are likely to overlook just how much bigger, more readable, and more viewable the Mini's display is.

The Mini's added "utility" is enormous... and it's convenience under-appreciated. The iPhone is great for on the go, and the + better than it is for viewing (if one can fit it into one's shirt pocket!), but for at home?! For watching video, ebook reading, web browsing, etc., there is no comparison. The Mini's display is nearly 2 1/2 times bigger than that of the Plus! It's also more convenient for many to hold and use than the big iPads.

I think many people hear a big smartphone can substitute for the Mini and buy that instead, or convince themselves there's no reason for a 2nd device, but haven't experienced how great using a Mini is! And, how much qualitatively better the viewing, reading, browsing, emailing, and typing experience is on the Mini than on the "small" screens of the iPhones.

We have had both-- the Mini for home and the iPhone for out and about -- and it's a great combo. We now have the iPad and the iPhone, but miss the Mini, especially for photography-- and for browsing and reading in bed!
