If they discontinue the iPad mini, then the 12.9" can't be too far behind it.

I'm sure it is a great drawing tablet. But there just aren't enough artists for Apple to justify keeping it and the majority of people beyond artist will want a full blown operating system for a screen that size. iOS just isn't going to cut it.

I understand that there are many on here that like the 12.9" iPad. But there are also many who like the iPad mini and I would find it difficult to believe that Apple sells more 12.9" iPads than iPad minis.

Just my $0.02.

Going off what I see at my university, iPad Pro is getting destroyed by Surface. I've seen only 3 iPad Pros in the wild since release. I see 3-5 Surface tablets a day.(No, I'm not exaggerating)
I assume you mean the 12.9" iPad when you use the term 'iPad Pro'? Because it is rather hard to distinguish an iPad Air 2 from a 9.7" iPad Pro.

I don't think this is the case at all. The Apple
Pencil is one of the exclusive features with for the Pro line. It's actually rumored the Apple Pencil 2 will be released soon. Also, the Pencil can do more Than drawing. It also can be used for handwriting, tracing, taking notes, etc.

That's one of the main points for the Pro, is the Apple Pencil.

But it probably gets more profit out of selling one 12.9" iPad vs selling one iPad mini. The iPad mini is also being encroached upon by larger and larger smartphones. Unless Apple goes back to one-size iPhones, the new bezel-less design will result in a 'Plus' device probably reaching about 6".

And as you alluded to, there are many people who like the 12.9" iPad without being artists. I find it great for reading, watching video, showing pictures, editing images, using any kind of maps, working with two apps side-by-side and for displaying sheet music (the 9.7" version is just a bit too small to show a full page).

There simply are many tasks that can be more pleasurable on an iPad than on a laptop, even if the laptop has the same dimensions and weight.

The iPad really needs a rethinking of the OS in order to take advantage of the screen size and power. A scaled up version of the iPhone OS isnt going to cut it anymore. Another screen size isnt going to increase iPad sales, but an "iPadOS" will :D

New MacBook Pro's were released not too long ago and are rumored for a silent update during WWDC.

He might be referring to iMacs. But in any case, it has no relation to an iPad article and it's usually just one form or another someone Of complaining.

What's wrong with the 12" model? Is the screen too small? Because otherwise it is a retina macbook air in every way.
That and price, I'd say. Also lack of ports maybe. I would love to see the 14" MacBook at about the same price as the current 12" MacBook. Just like when the first gen rMBP launched, current 12" MacBooks are a bit overpriced and I believe it will get some price cut sooner than later.

While Apple still sells way more iPads, I have to wonder what percentage are actually iPad Pros. My conclusion is that at the near $1000 level, most would rather buy a full PC than an iOS device. I love iPads, but Apple is clearly in la la land.

>>I have to wonder what percentage are actually iPad Pros

the article says they are "600,000 units in July, up from around 500,000 units currently, with annual shipments said to reach 5 million units this year". With six months left in the year that avgs out to roughly 1.8 to 2.5M per quarter.
Total ipad sales (Q2 est) 8.9M and previous 13M (holiday quarters)... so, say, avg 10M per quarter (or 40M annual).

So percentage of iPad pro/iPad total is around 20% depending on which quarter.

Surface shipments, according to Trendforce (2017) is about 3.9 falling to 2.8M:

I skeptical about the Microsoft number... I think they are/will be slightly higher, but the general ballpark is probably correct, 3-4M units or roughly 2.5% of market.

Hope this helps.

The 12.9 Ipad pro came out in 2015 and its still not a pro device...Apple should be ashamed.

I agree with your assertions that the 12.9" iPad is more profitable than the mini and there are many people who like them. But Apple could sell a lot of different things that would be profitable. They just can't sell enough of them to justify selling them for a company the size of Apple.

Actually thousands have been waiting for an iPad update. The reason for sales dropping is that its such a good device it doesn't need to be purchased every year. I myself am waiting to upgrade when the next round of iPads come out.

I will buy the new iPad 10.5" also. I have an iPad air 1 and use it evey day but it does not work well with a stylus. The iPads last a long time.

If they scrap the iPad Mini I will have to buy a Samsung or Amazon tablet. I only use it to read eBooks but it would be really short sighted of Apple to do this.

I was just explaining to another forum member, if I had to purchase the Amazon tablet or Samsung tablet, I would easily choose the Samsung tablet. I had the opportunity to test the Fire tablet line, and I was not impressed at all with it. The display, the build quality and Overall user interface Were subpar at best. For the money, Amazon has things priced accurately and affordably, but I would spend the extra money if you can and invest in Samsung. Samsungs quality and user interface have the Amazon tablet beat in every way. But that's just from my experiences.

Whether a device is Pro or not depends on the user and his computing needs as much as the device. As a teacher, I easily clock more hours using my iPad Pro for work-related purposes than both my Macs combined.

I love the rich fantasy worldbuilding that goes on within these rumors nowadays - I hear that after production increased, Apple decided to update the model to a much improved version 2, and then discontinued it altogether.

I, and thousands of others, would prefer an updated MacBook Air with retina screen. iPad sales have been falling for the last four years.

Ditto

I really want a lighter laptop. I would buy an air in a heartbeat. But the lack of retina screen is what's stopping me.

Yes, but they still sell 7 to 8 million ipads each quarter, and ALL mac sales combined 4.5 million. An updated macbook air will bring in a drop of extra revenue. But IF apple can manage to improve OS and hardware in the ipad so for some people(read:some) it would be a a macbook replacement, they will experience quite big growth in ipad revenue(perhaps not in salesnumbers).

The ipad pro will be an high end tablet and entry level macbook.

iPad sales are going downhill so to keep it alive u flood the market with larger-than-large screens ? How will this help exactly ? When they all are going to have the same features one way or another.. There is very little difference apart from performance and screen.

Usually, you could work out based on how better the 13-inch one sold... and how many people favored it over the 9.7"... That's how i always work it out.

Apple already has laptops with the same CPU class as the MBA that have a retina screen and are about the same thickness and weight as the MBA. Or did you mean, you would buy a new laptop as soon as Apple offers a retina-screen version for $1000?

Apple's new lineup is crippled by having only one type of port, no magsafe etc. Gimmicks like the Touchbar. A step backward. The Air was pretty much perfect, which is why Apple still have to sell it even though it's old. Microsoft and others are still producing their best machines by copying it's form factor.

Cook is only creating all these iPad sizes because it is seen as his legacy. "Why would you even buy a computer?" he has said. He's desperate for them to succeed. Nobody is taking the tablets anymore though.
