can someone explain what justifies the price tag of tens of thousands of dollars for a watch and why would anyone buy it?

I can barely justify spending tens of thousands of dollars on a car, so I doubt I could help your understanding there much.

There's really no excuse for wearing an expensive watch anymore (everything tells time these days) except for compensating for a small penis.

That's such a narrow minded view of things. Should I also drive a KIA or a Hyundai because no one should drive an expensive car either?

I am really interested to see what Apple comes out with. I can't offhand see what this "watch" might do that I would be interested in, but that's my limitation talking; I'm hoping they can come up with something amazing that i haven't thought of!

Obviously you aren't tuned into the history of iOS.

It is pretty well known that iOS started out on a project to build a tablet. It is only after Steve realized that it would make a great cell phone OS that the project was refocused on iPhone.

Everyone assumes that iWatch will run an UI that is similar to iOS. I think that is unlikely. The iOS UI was optimized for a smartphone. Yes, it is used in iPad, but it frankly isn't great there and it is used mainly to make the transition from your phone easier. And to allow Apps to cross sell easier.
That is garbage in so many ways. To begin with iOS was used on iPad because the original project was in fact an attempt to build a tablet. Beyond that the biggest problems seen with iOS are policy related not technical.
But this watch's screen is going to be so small, I think the UI has to change.

Of course. I see these mock ups that basically shrink an iPhine screen to watch size are non sense. However that doesn't mean that iPhone won't be running iOS just that the user interface will change dramatically. People are far too willing to link the UI with the operating system.

Got it. So anytime someone spends more on anything than the most basic functional level they're "compensating."

This mock-up I like. It's not as good as the traditional one but it's better than all of the other mock-ups.

you are wrong.

About what? If someone can buy a $500 to $1000 phone they can just as easily take that same money and decide to buy a watch.

Price doesn't need justification. All it needs is someone willing to pay it. You are also missing perspective. For someone with the means, tens of thousands could be the equivalent of tens or hundreds to you.

Sapphire should be on all models, or else it's a waste of time (just look at what they did with the iPhone 5C)

A rational look at 5C would indicate that it has been very successful. If your lead phone comes in at number one in sales and the 5C is either two or three then that is a knock out team.

because all i can think of is that there are a few people in a few social circles who have too much money and the only way to stand out from their friends (or maybe fit in?) is to get something which costs 0.1% of the money they are paying, to make.

Only time will tell!

This is a problem uniquely observed in the wearers of expensive watches. I don't even know why but that industry seems to attract the worst type of people that one can imagine.

People who have a string of apple products in their sig must be compensating for a miniature penis, right?

There's no excuse for equating everything with a penis these days unless you are obsessed with other people's penises.

Most people who attend meetings daily aren't CEOs, you know.

Yes, I know that is why I exaggerated a little bit ;) But please tell me why could it be embarrassing to wear a individual watch then?

Nice pictures!
Picked up the Hublot Classic Fusion last week.

Typical Asian ;-) you are what you posses. Thank good the culture here is less demanding.

If you are wealthy enough to post on macrumors, the majority of any technology you buy would be considered by at least 10% to 20% of the world population to be an equally extravagant expenditure, hundreds to thousands of times more expensive than their daily income. Justify yourself.

Same applies to watch buyers.

As a wearer of expensive watches I have to say that being bad and small-penised is undervalued.

Boy, when you put it that way, that’s probably everybody on this thread then. So what you’re really saying is it’s almost like broad generalizations are nearly always wrong?

Um… Did this really just happen?

This iWatch has been a topic of conversation so long that it has inspired imaginations, swelled aspirations, and become passé. It has gone through an entire product cycle without ever being released.
