Seriously? Steve removed the floppy drive and all legacy ports on the first iMac - all it had was a CD/DVD drive and a couple of USB ports. People were furious at first...and then low and behold the entire industry moved in the same direction. The MacBook Air removes the optical drive, and again many were screaming - in particular that Apple was chasing thinness over usability (sound familiar?)...and just as before, the industry has largely moved to removing the optical drive from laptops.

Take off your rose colored glasses. Tim Cook is far from perfect, but neither was Jobs. Apparently the reality distortion field he created lives on even after his death.
Steve received a lot of criticism when he was Apple's CEO too. Now he is dead and can't speak anymore, so he is being used as a tool to attack Tim Cook and Apple as a whole. If Apple has another CEO in the future, people will say Tim Cook is good and the current CEO is a bean counter.

You have absolutely NO idea what are you talking about. What made EarPods fall from ears was NOT the shape of it, instead, it was the lightness of the earbuds combined with the torque force from the cables (jumping up and down as you walk, jog and so forth). The AirPods DO stay wonderudlly in your ears even when you’re running - all because they do not have the ancient chords/cables to move them around and out of your ears.
This has been shown over and over since the AirPods release.

I've tried AirPods and they fall out of my ears, as do other non Apple bluetooth earphones.

Wrong, you charge the AirPod case which then lasts up to 24 hours, the AirPods themselves last 5 hours and you can literally put them back in the case for 15minutes which fast charges them and they last 3 hours.

An unneeded complication for many. My earphones never need charging and last forever.

Yet you are by your previous post?

I talked about what he actually did (i.e. excluding Apple Desktop Bus from the original iMac), and showed the parallels to what Apple is doing today with the headphone jack.

I did not speculate as to what he would or wouldn’t do if he were still leading the company today.

Well, on the positive side. If this is not fake news (which it really sounds like), then at least I won't have to worry about that upgrade hole in the budget. I use my 12.9" primarily in landscape mode, plugged into the charger and with a pair of headphones attached most of the time. Couldn't be any worse with what the rumor is suggesting. Sure won't be paying for that. It would be a downgrade compared to my current iPad. Who wants to pay for a downgrade? lol.

Yes and I also talked about what he actually did, in replacing a propriety port with an open standard one, not the opposite way around which is what they have done this time (3.5mm is open, lightning is propriety and Bluetooth is a not a direct replacement).

Typical Apple. No need but greed to remove the jack.

I have yet to use the adapter on my 7+ (And with the removal of the jack pretty much killed my listening to music through my 7+) and if I get another iPP, won’t use it or Bluetooth there either.

Wow, if this is true, damn glad I have a current iPad Pro 10.5. Looks like outside of a likely non-discernible upgrade in performance (a la iPhone 7 Plus to 8 Plus/X) and Face ID, not worth looking at yet. I’ll reserve final judgement until actual specs are released.

What is the big improvement?

How does it counter:

A) the high cost
B) the need to charge them
C) the ease of loosing them

I was an AirPod skeptic too. Held out a long time before I finally tried them. I can honestly say they’re so much better than I expected, and so much nicer to use than my old wired headphones.

A) The cost is worth it, and if you’ve got the money for an iPhone in 2018 you can afford AirPods
B) Charging is the best part. Stick them in their little case when you’re done and they’re good to go next time you need them. Charge the case once in a while as an afterthought
C) I thought they would fall out but they don’t. The lack of a wire means there’s no weight tugging on them. So they’re actually quite hard to lose, imo.

I now listen to podcasts or music more often while walking around because of the ease of throwing on these headphones, believe it or not.

I’m talking about statements you made like this:

Steve would have removed it only if there was a direct standardised replacement (like USB-C). Lightning headphones are the biggest inconsistency and joke. Steve wouldn't have allowed that.

You have no way to know this.

You can get wires to attach to them if you’re worried about them dropping out and loosing them. I got some Spigen wires but never ended up using them as they don’t fall out.

However I think for some people the benefits don’t outweigh the costs and so wired headphones are always better.

Not a complication at all, you charge you’re phone and you’re tablet right? AirPods take less time to charge than those devices. Also the benefits of having no wires tethering me to a device is great and outweighs any small charging time.

For me the negatives outweigh the benefits, so the cost isn't worth it. I don't agree if you have an iPhone that you can instantly afford lightning headphones.

B) Charging is the best part. Stick them in their little case when you’re done and they’re good to go next time you need them. Charge the case once in a while as an afterthought

There is no charging routine required for wired headphones don't.

They fall out for me and they fall out for many to the point there are accessories to keep them in.

You have no way to know this.

But you apparently know that Apple would have removed it?

All I am saying is that baed on what happened with the iMac, he would have done a similar thing with the headphone port.

Yes it is a complication as it is something that you don't have do to with wired headphones at all. I'd love if I didn't have to charge my phone, but at the end of the day I can charge and use them at the same time, which lessons the impact.

Not really sure what you’re talking about, and, frankly, I’ve said all that I need to. Thanks for the dialogue!

I need to check the whole thread. We use iPads and Squares for sales at conventions. There must be alternatives for using Squares and other readers without a jack. Hopefully that doesn't mean dongles!

Terrible how? Headphone jack makes more sense on a phone than a tablet. I'm speaking for myself but I have never used headphone jack on my iPad

I never use Siri on my devices but I don't ask for it to be removed even though it is rubbish.

Plenty of people use headphones with iPads, I do all the time. It is massively big in education as well.

Thank you. These guys speak like if steve was a saint. There were many things removed during steve times to push the industry forward.
