I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.
pretty sure if S.Jobs were still at Apple, the headphone jack would already be removed from iPad. ;)

No headphone jack? This foolishness is why I went back to android. Tim cook is doing too.much. In other words if you're editing video and/or make beats you're just screwed? Guess I'll be holding onto my iPad pro 12.9 for a while

It’s called Bluetooth. They have been making Bluetooth headphones for 15+ years.

Absolutely stupid. It would make the ipad useless for music creation with attached devices like the Apogee JAM. Why? Because of the wireless audio playback via headphones, there will be a significant delay and high latency compared to cabled headphones. Which with wireless audio makes playing and recording instruments like guitars, drums, and other things, completely useless.

There is NO way around it. No bluetooth based audio has the necessary low latency required for these types of uses.

I can understand the removal of the headphone jack on a small phone, but on a tablet designed for the "pro" market it literally does not make sense AT ALL, and would be a tremendously STUPID decision, and a big slap in the face of the users that ACTUALLY uses the iPad Pro for anything that revolves around CREATING rather than just consuming the latest games and youtibe vidz.
What’s the latency like on the Lightning-3.5mm dongle?

I’m okay with the removal of the headphone jack as long as you can use two Bluetooth headphones at the same time.

The wife and I watch movies on it while traveling and I’m already super annoyed that we can’t already. Not having to pull out the wires and a splitter to watch a movie would be a major selling point.

The Cube (a Mac desktop) was released by Steve without a 3.5 mm jack.

Removing the headphone jack makes total sense, since having the AirPods I don’t use it on my iPad or Mac’s anyway.

The Face ID only working one way I don’t believe for a second, Apple will have found a way to make it work both portrait and horizontally in my opinion.
It actually makes zero sense. I guess nobody realizes that the people who make movies, songs and everything you see and hear, still rely on that good ol’ headphone jack. NOBODY creates content with bluetooth headphones. It’s too laggy and quality is inferior. Being able to start a project on a MBP, then take it on the go with a iOS device is very common. Having to use a different pair of headphones and or a dongle to listen and charge at the same time is really an inconvenience.

Another redesign to make previous accessories useless?? I mean, I get the headphone jack part. And I would like the iPad to be ligher since I carry it around everywhere. But there must be a way to make their own accessories to work with newer versions. Like at least leave them at the same spot so we can connect the damn $200 keyboard that we only got to use for 1-2 years.

Hold it at the notch

Just a way to get another $200.00 out of you. It is ridiculous. I went with through it when I bought the first gen. 9.7" iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard, then the 10.5" iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard. At this rate, we are lucky they let us use the Apple Pencil on ALL iPad Pro models!

Infinite if you've already plugged in the USB-to-Lightning adapter which is the norm for MIDI keyboards/controllers etc. and thus don't have a slot for it. (The Lightning-through connector on the adapter is charge-only). So you'll need an external audio interface and a USB hub as well by which time even Tim should be starting to see why you might want a PC.

I need to check the whole thread. We use iPads and Squares for sales at conventions. There must be alternatives for using Squares and other readers without a jack. Hopefully that doesn't mean dongles!

No need to check the whole thread, just spend a millisecond or two on an internet search:

For an "average music listener" like me, Bluetooth headphones are perfect. BUT, why remove something quite useful just because they think it's old? Ok, make the iPad water-resistant, so it could be used in many new situations. I think removing something what is just working ok and people are using it every day – without any excuse, any reason – is not acceptable. Ok, Bluetooth is the future, so they should be including the AirPods to every new iPhone since the 7. I also think that Steve would get rid of the headphone jack as soon as he could, but I also think he would include (maybe at least some cheaper version) AirPods to every single non-headphone jack iPhone. For the price you pay for iPhone, they should/could do it. This is just another marketing bs from Apple.

I’m sure you’re aware that Square sells a nice looking lighting adapter for their card reader? My wife uses square for her business. She’s just been using Apples lighting to 3.5 dongle for a long while now. Works great for point of sale on Apple devices that no longer have a headphone jack. Hope that helps answer your question. How else would you attach without a dongle? I’m mean technically a charging cable is a dongle for charging.

The very first iPhone had a recessed headphone jack that required an adapter to use non-Apple headphones. Why? Because Steve didn't like the little gap that shows when you plugged standard headphones into a jack mounted on a curved edge.
