This makes me sad. The iPhone Air is the most exciting Apple product in years. It's a real shame that more people aren't willing to give it a chance. Because of this, Apple will likely think twice from now on before bringing new and interesting ideas to market. People have criticized them for years for doing the same thing over and over. Well, I guess we can expect more of that going forward.

One camera, one speaker, smaller battery, higher price... new in-house chips working seamlessly...

They could have named it " iPhone Touch", but it's last decade.

Being a reader, coming from the 13, it's a keeper.

The mini, now this one, may be the 4th phone should be the experimental line, not knowing how receptive the market will be. what's next?

I was so excited about the iPhone Air until I put my hands on it. It's just too big. It feels awkward in a pocket.

This should have been the height of the mini or regular iPhone.

You need two hands to use it, and its suppose to be a light form factor...
I agree, a lightweight device should be usable with one hand. Would make more sense if they downsized it to 6.3"

Apple plans to cut production of the iPhone Air amid underwhelming sales performance, Japan's Mizuho Securities believes (via The Elec).

The Japanese investment banking and securities firm claims that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are seeing higher sales than their predecessors during the same period last year, while the standard iPhone 17 is a major success, performing significantly better than the iPhone 16.

The iPhone Air is apparently the outlier; Apple plans to reduce production by one million units this year. Meanwhile, Apple plans to increase production of all other models by two million units. The overall production forecast of the iPhone 17 series this year has also been increased from 88 million units to 94 million units for the start of 2026.

A separate report earlier today claimed that Samsung has canceled plans to release a successor to its own iPhone Air rival, the Galaxy S25 Edge, due to low sales. Nevertheless, the iPhone Air reportedly sold out within hours in China, despite lower than expected sales in western countries last month.

The same report from Mizuho Securities today revealed details about Apple's first foldable iPhone and other future devices.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I absolutely love this. I said from the beginning that nobody was asking for this poor excuse, gimped phone. What a piece of garbage. People disagreed with me. A 17 Pus probably would have sold better than this. This phone was just an excuse to try push people towards the $$$$ “Pro” line (and has a marketing term like “Pro” ever been so overused?). I’m delighted to see greedy Apple fail here.

How is Apple greedy on this? It’s not the only choice of phone, no one is forced into the air over the other standard options… and remember, to make the air as thin as it is pretty much the entire actual guts of the phone are in the camera bump, the rest is mostly battery, so I’m not sure how much less “gimped” they could realistically make it and keep the target. Just because it’s not super successful compared to other models doesnt make it gimped for what it is, or make Apple greedy for introducing it.

Hell, it doesnt even make the air a failure, or garbage, it’s still selling, plenty of folks do want the phone…

Successful or not, this was a stepping stone to the folding phone, which will be next. Ironically, if the air is discontinued, the line up becomes iPhone, iPhone Pro, iPhone Max, and iPhone Fold, which means the average price of an iPhone goes up even more. Another win for Apple.🍏💰

That was the whole point of the Air to begin with! 🏦🍏💵💰💵💰🍏🏦

Apple is one of the greediest companies on the planet. But the Air succeeding for what it what was never the point.

They went too far with the camera and battery limitations, especially when you have a cheaper phone available that is better on both fronts. It is also priced too close to the Pro.

I'm interested in the Air, but based on what I paid for my 14 Pro, I'll be using it until it's dead or unsupported.

Now, if it had a smaller screen, things would be different.

The Air was slotted in at the $999 price point. The regular 17 is at $799, the Pro starts at $1099. Apple has a history of putting something at $999 going back to the X, so they chose to experiment with a different design (successful BTW) and decontented or value engineered it with fewer cameras and the smaller battery. There's a legit argument over whether the price is $100 too high, for buyers of the Air like me it is not. I often use this thing without a case and it is spotless, no scratches, chips, or dents. That's worth a lot to me.

Should the Air not survive past 2025-26, the real question is what will Apple put in that $999 slot? Another Plus model? Those were also mild sellers, though the 17 is good enough now that a Plus model 18 would certainly eat into Pro/Max sales. The rumored foldable is not going to sell for $999, probably twice that. And there's no way any of the smaller or less premium iPhones (mini, SE, e) would occupy that price point. So I would guess at this early stage that Apple would release a 2nd gen Air with a chip bump if for no other reason than to amortize the original development cost. They would still not market it at all as they want the Pro/Max margins. If you're going to complain about Apple being greedy, that's it.

With a good protective case on it, my iPhone Air is still about 25% lighter than my previous iPhone Pro Max. That 25% less weight is most appreciated when doom scrolling and catching up on emails as I wake up each morning. My only real complaint with my Air is with the speaker's minimal fidelity (sounds tinny). I really do like the Air but I'll probably go back again to the Pro next year.

So all of you saying fail is laughable. For one the production cut was a million that’s nothing a small cut if that for two this is the only real report saying this. No other corroborating evidence. Three it sold millions beside the million production cut. Top it off with every year production gets modified and shifted its the way post launch works. I don’t understand how so many are clueless to this

They don't cut production if the sales are strong! Your analysis is an epic failure.

The reason why many of “Tim’s” products don’t sell that well, is because he’s simply not a good CEO.

The iPhone Air is under-selling. The Vision Pro is a disaster. The rest of the products were a design of Steve Jobs, just matured. Even the Apple Watch was in the works just before Steve died.

Someone get John Ternus on the horn.
