I agree - I understand the appeal of having multiple options for everyone, but the product lineup is too cluttered imo. You've got the 16e replacing the SE 2, then you've got the Regular, Pro, Air (basically a thinner Pro) and Pro Max (bigger Pro). Same with the iPad - iPad Mini, Regular, Air11, Air 13, Pro 11, Pro 13, etc.

After a while you're giving your customers option paralysis.
It is huge worldwide market that is maturing. If Apple does not provide the options paralysis choices to customers then the competition will do so.

Didn't see that coming (yes, I'm being sarcastic, because the public is always demanding iPhones with less battery life!)

It didn't sell well in China.

The Air was approved with required firmware changes, which meant there was virtually zero inventory available on launch day. This is why all colors and storage sizes show a 1-2 week wait time.
Where are you getting inventory numbers from?

I’d get the air if not for the compromises. Maybe I’m a classic consumer but I expect my new device to keep the same feature set as my previous but with improvements on the or even more features.
Going from even a 13 mini (my current device) to an air offers some improvements but it takes some away as well. I just can’t justify it when I’m already complaining about my aging battery life in this mini. Adding a battery and case, which let’s face it, I’m doing, is negating the whole point. At that point I’m better off with a 16 or 17.
Speaking of, I really wish they made a 17 in that ultramarine color, I’m tempted to get a 16 just so I can have that color finally.

Why not just get a new battery for your 13 Mini?

In your opinion which you're entitled to.
I love my 14 Pro but I keep it in one of Apple’s leather covers and I honestly think they’re becoming too thick.

Regardless of the Air being (kind of) expensive for the specs it gives, I’d happily pay the price for the sole reason of it being so thin.

I value its thin-ness over the lack of camera specs and/or battery life.

But you’re right, to each their own.

It was a nice try but they really need to just cut that line. Mini, plus, now this. All sales bombs? Just do regular and pro max. That’s all that is needed.
Speak for yourself please, I do want something in between and lighter. Done with those bricks and the normal pro is too small.

Its priced very strangely like at that price point you may as well just get the regular Pro and they don't even seem to advertise it? All I see is ads for the orange Pro.

The "wow" factor also didn't really happen, it felt like a iPhone 6 back in the day? All it actually shows is that the Pro has gotten too bulky over the years

I couldn’t get the Air despite its so-called beauty. I couldn’t because I’d slap a case on it, which then defeats the beauty bragging rights. So I went Pro, slapped a case on it, and I’m the happier for it.

I think Apple internal metrics and data collection is SO good that they know basically right away when an iPhone (or other new product in an existing lineup) is going to be a hit or not.

"How it hits" is likely something very quantifiable in their data streams, pretty quickly.

Need a smaller but thicker Pro. Not saying mini small, but with advances they could put the beloved 5.8/5.9" screen size of the X/Xs/11Pro into an updated body with smaller bezels and overall smaller size, make it a tad thicker and have as good or even better battery life than the Pro and Pro Max.

I really think a larger segment are getting tired of the bigger (tall and wide) phones, but just don't want to give up features or battery life.

It's simple:

iPhone 18
iPhone 18 Pro
iPhone 18 Pro Max
iPhone 18 Ultra Foldable

That's it. Simple. Straightforward. And everyone can choose which one works for them.

another flop like mini.

people want power, not slim devices.

thin devices are too fragile.
It's not fragile at all. Apple learned from bend-gate and made a solid device.

I'm willing to bet if they polled possible customers, their top issues would be the 1) price tag, 2) one camera and 3) battery life concerns. This was a new design/concept and Apple should have priced it accordingly at $899.

Also the Air should have had more exciting colors. Anyone except Supple Chain Tim would have realized that.

Report from South China Morning Post (Hong Kong) dated October 14:

Apple CEO Tim Cook's latest visit to China this year turned out to herald the launch of the iPhone Air on the mainland, as the country's three major telecommunications network operators start commercial trials of the eSIM function on smartphones.
China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom each confirmed on Monday that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved the eSIM trials, as Cook later that evening joined Apple's live streaming session on ByteDance-owned platform Douyin to promote the new iPhone 17 series and next week's release of the iPhone Air.
According to Apple's China website, iPhone Air pre-orders would start at 9am on Friday, while shipments would begin next Wednesday - about a month later than the rest of the world, owing to regulatory restrictions regarding eSIM technology on smartphones. Prices for the iPhone Air start at 7,999 yuan (US$1,122).
