It's possible the bug was with the temperature reporting, iow, wrong temps being reported.
I mean it's possible, but people were saying the exterior of the laptop was getting extremely hot as well. Something like well over 100F on the keyboard.

Better avoid youtube for the next few days or I'll have a hundred of these new tests in my recommended list. And try starting them with something other than "hey guys, whats up?". Thanks chaps.

Thank you. I have been wondering where the YouTube Code of Conduct requires every tech YouTuber to begin with "Hey guys, what's up?" as if that were the only conceivable greeting one might give one's audience.

Let’s wait for the armchair engineers here to say this isn’t good enough and doesn’t address the hardware issue they concluded must exist.

It's too early to say if this addresses the issue.

Where my thoughts are is this is an incredibly expensive machine compared to comparably specced windows laptops, and that price is paying for the superb apple quality and a product that just works. Apple no longer produces quality products that just work, but their markup is higher than ever.

LOL.

I am pretty sure what this update does is to limit the heat and power consumption.

I really doubt that the MacBook Pro can handle esp. the Core i9 anywhere near its full load.

That's the problem with all mobile products - to go mobile means you sacrifice performance with desktop class hardware. That is has the been case since the first laptop rolled out.

See, one sensationalizing glory seeker creates a video. Not capable of understanding what the issue is, nor enlisting qualified assistance to discuss it, nor reporting it to the vendor. vendor fixes within 7 days, nonetheless. So the glory seeker's insinuations are wrong. apology? Probably not? all the stupid snarky remarks made by unqualified techs, apology? probably not?

For a professional article, please see: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/273917-cpu-throttling. Here the author appropriately calls out Dell, HP, Apple and other laptop makers for creating laptops that can't run at full sustained speeds for long periods of time (The Android syndrome). Personally, a worthy discussion, I don't believe a laptop is a workstation, I don't mind full speeds being available in sustained but limited bursts. If I need 7/24 (Xeon) or even hours long running, I'd get a workstation.

The i9 is especially problematic according to some reports saying it can draw close to the same number of watts as the laptop's power input.

How about merging this article with the former two on the main page, this is just ridiculous, similar to the few weeks after it came to light the battery throttling done by Apple, same articles on the same issue over and over.

I'm not a mod, I can't do that. I'm sorry justperry.

I'm hopeful but actually a little dubious.

This was such a disaster right out of the gate, that the returns and complaints accompanying them must have been dizzying.
So, i'm wondering if this isn't just a hack to try to stem the flood of returns.

Let's hope.

You don't think people are going to test this? Apple has zero incentive to claim a fix and not actually fix the issue.

Dave2D unfortunately had no idea what he was talking about. He now has to eat his words. The Dell XPS he referenced in the video that ALSO throttles, guess what? Do you see Microsoft handing out a fix within DAYS of the product being released? NOPE. We released ours less than a week after product shipment.
BEAT THAT.

What has Microsoft to do with DELL's cooling? Apple makes the hardware and software. DELL in this case makes the hardware. Since when is Microsoft responsible for DELL's firmware? There are lots of Windows laptops functioning properly with the i9 processor. Please TimothyCooky get your act together!

You're delusional as if apple are going to claim a fix to such a huge issue and expect everyone to just trust them and not run extensive benchmarks and tests, ridiculous

Hold on there cowboy, I said I was hopeful.

But everyone was fearing this before they were released. All of a sudden it's 6 cores with the same die? A little scary (thermaly that is :D )

..Yet they used input from said YouTuber to fix the issue. I never understand people who get mad at people who call out legitimate issues. If everyone just stayed silent nothing would get fixed.

Digital key, not really sure what that means, does anyone? I mean I know what those words mean, but not how it fits into the alleged VRM overheating.

It looked like the VRMs weren't quite enough for the i9s maximum power states, and would have their thermal headroom eaten in an instant, by playing with the i9s maximum power states people were able to get good improvements. I'm guessing Apples fix will be similar.

Oh, well at least we all remained calm and no one freaked out.

At least the freaking out got a swift response!

Mac rumors is a circus. Popcorn is almost always required when reading.
Do you contribute to that or just report on it?

People are people. Everyone weighs in with their opinions and their perspectives on the news. There are just as many who blindly slam Apple as there those who blindly support Apple. Where one sits on that scale affects how they see the opposing view.

Just consider how long it would have taken if people like Dave2D didn't create that video. There seems to be this assumption that now that Apple has released a fix, that they would've done so anyways just as quickly.
