I agree! There's a happy medium between the two extremes! We don't need a fat system and we don't need the current twiggy, lets just get the most fit system to support this and future hot running CPU's. While we are at, lets give the Pros the ports they really need! USB-A (2) USB-C (2-3), SD card and MagSafe!

Not to pick on you specifically but on the list of things pro's need, why is SD card's which are used by no pro equipment always on the list. My DSLR's have CFast or CF cards, and pro video cameras are CFast or bog standard 2.5inch SSD's. I can see SD cards on consumer models where they would have some use, not on a pro machine.

It was proven it was a software bug days ago, with Volta limiting cpu to 55w I was seeing 1200-1300 cinebench scores as opposed to 900-950 before, quite impressed they pushed out the fix so quick hopefully I can uninstall Volta now and reenable SIP

You do understand you only proved the issue is a cooling defect not a firmware code defect. Lowering the voltage allows the chip to run cooler!

So, you think Apple is going to do the same? Thats not what they implied!

We need to see what they alter before we jump on this is a fixed condition. It may only address the odd dropouts people saw and not really alter that much.

Don't forget other testing has shown the systems power draw is greater than what the USB-C power supply can supply under full loading. So, is Apple going to create a more powerful brick to address that? Or anyone needing to render large vids in succession (running overnight) will need to plug in a second power brick so the system doesn't cut out when the battery is completely drained.

This was my comment previously. Apple laptops practically ALWAYS thermal throttle. A majority if not ALL of their desktops will thermal throttle.
So - when practically every product a company makes has the same behavior, then the normal thing to do is understand that , "this company" produces products "that do this thing"
So do not have expectations that the company, today, changed their history of doing "whatever the thing" is.

A bad analogy being if a restaurant consistently, year after year, decade after decade makes terrible hot dogs. Don't go in and order a hot dog and then say it is terrible. This is a known fact dude.

It is just odd to somehow formulate a thought that with this particular laptop, Appel has "changed it's ways" with zero evidence that it has. Even by looking at the physical product. You go, "well hell, the last macbook with a semi powerful chip would overheat under a heavy load. This laptop appears to look exactly the same but for some reason I am expecting an even more powerful, more heat producing processor to ( in my deranged world) somehow not produce more heat."

Q the Jackie Chan "WHAT?!" meme

What's practical about carrying around a thicker, heavier machine that makes more noise just to have it perform slightly better (by being able to Turbo Boost longer)? Assuming the problem with the i9 isn't inadequate cooling.

LOL, are you under the assumption that just because it'd be thicker means it'd be something like from the 80s?

Please....

Let me remind us of the other side of this for a moment (as a person who is happy with his 2018 MacBook Pro). When your marketing revolves around how terrible the other guys are, and how wonderful you are -- well, this is the danger of that kind of marketing. If you mess up, you will get flack for your holier than thou attitude. C'mon, does anyone really wonder why Apple gets flack when they mess up?

They make themselves out to be better than everyone else (who is tacky, unreliable, virus laden, bad build quality, etc.) Of course they will catch flack when they have spent their existence poking fun of everyone else!

How many Apple die hard fans blasted the original coverage??

Go to the original macrumors post, and we had people defending Apple calling the YouTuber a whiner, just wanting attention.

They called it throddlegate to mock the issue. Also, one guy was telling everyone to use their head, to move along as this isn’t a story.

Best of all some people were critizing the original video poster for not making a video about surface.

People need to be accountable for their words!!! Apple diehards who refuse to believe that Apple can’t do anything wrong need to wake up. They are really making it worse for the informed consumer.

You do know that Geekbench results have been high even with the throttling right? It just reports basically the best boost. Use something like Cinebench or a Prime95 test for actual testing.

You clearly do not know me. I am not unreasonable. I am a fan though. I don't deny that and there is nothing wrong with being a fan of a company. Hopefully it makes them a better company. Apple is where my heart is. Have been an Apple customer for over 22 years. They make phenomenal products. Especially when compared to the "competition", or lack thereof I should say.

Nothing wrong with being a fan. I am a fan of many things. Restaurants, sporting teams, hobbies... But I think it is a little bit crazy to blindly follow a whole company.

You say "'competition', or lack thereof I should say." - What exact product(s) is this statement related to? There is a ton of competition out there for every single one of Apple devices that may work better for others (maybe with the exception of the tablet space).

iPhone? Android has matured a lot. If you are a blind fan and don't check it out than that is on you. It doesn't mean the competition isn't out there. Pixel 2/OnePlus6/Galaxy phones are all very capable devices that probably have a better value to some people.

Macbooks? There are dozens upon dozens of Windows laptops out there. Quite a few of which compete with Macs on every line item (except for OS). Again most have a huge "value" to cost benefit as well.

I get you are a fan. But please don't blindly follow. Please want there to be good competition to push Apple further. And maybe... just maybe... Actually give some other company's products a chance even though it doesn't have that Apple logo on it. You just might be surprised.

A few days ago I suggested on Reddit that this could have been a software issue and I got raked over the coals for it.

While Apple acknowledged there is a firmware issue (fix) that might not address the whole problem here. It's odd how the WinTel systems which are also facing this same issue would have the same root issue. Yet, some heavy duty gaming systems are running like clockwork all using the exact same i9 chip. mmm...

Testing has also shown under load the USB-C power brick is unable to supply enough power so the battery is leaned on to fill the power need. So if you are running a batch job of renderings overnight lets say its possible the battery will exhaust its charge and the system crashes out in mid process due to lack of power, thats also not good!

Who uses their laptops like desktop workstations like this? Laptops are meant for portability and not sustained workloads the like of which you are describing. If you are doing sustained workloads like this, definitely invest the money on a desktop. They are more reliable and won't crash like you mentioned.

That's one hell of a freaking bug to not notice before launch. I thought they were having professionals test this hardware—didn't they contract with a bunch of them to help them develop new hardware based on actual use? At least they took care of it. Between this fix and the new keyboard membrane, hopefully the MBP is back on track and we can move on now. I'm back to being really tempted to buy one of these, but I really think I should just wait for new desktop hardware.

Let’s wait for the armchair engineers here to say this isn’t good enough and doesn’t address the hardware issue they concluded must exist.

See how far overreacting gets you?

How about we see how the update works out before being an armchair Engineering Lead. :D
In all seriousness, this should have never been in issue to begin with. C'mon Apple....

Why are you LOLing at these people? They are the ones who drove Apple to fix it.

I'm LOL at the screaming at the sky that was happening here the last week. Threads that were titled "so now that the 2018 Macbook Pros are a failure". It was a drama queen exhibition here.

This is good news. I’m eager to see the results of the next rounds of testing. I may cancel my order and upgrade, depending on results.

Also, good on Apple for fixing it and doing so quickly.

How did they not notice this in testing?

exactly - what is concerning to me is that every electronic product will go thru some amount of thermal testing, inside of an oven set to precise temperatures (both hot and cold) to simulate ambient conditions.

if they did all their testing with the buggy throttling in place, then their thermal design may not have been tested properly and may not be able to cool the CPU/GPU properly in high ambient temperatures.

There were also a lot of people who were also saying "let's see if Apple can fix this".
