I promise you it isn't about a big check from Google as much as it is about being able to control and manage the new platform to create new revenue streams via subscription. Soon, you will be forced to "rent" or subscribe to what are generally accepted luxury features in current vehicles. Since Apple controls CarPlay, GM wants an avenue to charge you big bucks for simple, desirable features. That's all. This will be more common as time goes by.

"Your air conditioner provides basic cooling down to 75 degrees. Should you want cooler air, simply subscribe to GM's 'ICE Package' and have the ability to turn the thermostat as low as you wish. Daily, monthly, and annual plans are available."
It’s also about user data. That’s data that GM can leverage and sell to third-parties.

If GM wants to build "...a "holistically integrated" operating system with a "much-improved navigation and charging experience..." by all means go for it. Just make sure I can run CarPlay on top of that, and I'm good.

CarPlay is not the most important factor for me in choosing a vehicle, but if other criteria is equal (like performance), CarPlay would be a deciding factor for sure.
Excellent point. As it stands, my Honda has its own system (I find it far less usable than CarPlay), so if CarPlay isn't your thing... have at it. But I am already connected and using CarPlay before I leave my driveway.

I still don't see how GM thinks this is a good move. Everyone we know who has CarPlay in the car loves it. GM is shooting themselves in the foot. I wouldn't buy a car without it - unless there were no other options.
GM almost went bankrupt in 2008 before Obama bailed out the auto industry. Their sales would probably drop more after this

I noticed a lot of major company's have been making stupid decisions lately thats alienating their user base. Is there something psychotic is happening in the boardrooms.
They’re all looking for alternate sources of income rather than responding to market demands. No car manufacturer wants to make money by making good cars, they want to upcharge you for using your heat or air conditioning and sell your data to third parties.

I am also wondering what benefits do car makers get by excluding any mobile platforms? Does it cost a lot more to integrate two of them (CarPlay and Google Auto) vs just one?

If I were making a car, I would support them all to appeal to as wide pool of potential customers as possible.

Great . Clunky software like every they have. They will charge for maps like they do for their navigation system that sucks.

I expect rental cars to have CarPlay. Navigation is important in a rental car and it just better work. It's hard enough to get CarPlay to work in rental cars because it's usually been set up for someone else; I can't imagine GM no-play is going to be easier. The rental market is isn't everything, but!

I don't understand GM's decision at all. It doesn't sound exclusive to CarPlay either. Why would you nix CarPlay and Android Auto - two devices people carry around with them 24/7 - to just say you have a "holistically integrated" OS. Dumb marketing decision all around.

Don't care; I will never own any GM cars, regardless what they do. I'm always toward Japan/Korea market cars for reliability.
I've never owned a Japanese or Korean car, but I got nearly 300K miles out of my last Chevy Tahoe with only routine maintenance over 12 years of ownership. The transmission went out just shy of 300K miles and I decided not to fix it. I figured at that point I had gotten my money's worth. I chose to go with Chevy for my new truck because the Tahoe was so reliable.

Charging is why I went with another gas guzzler for my new vehicle. Look at what has happened in recent years with power grids nearly failing multiple times due to weather events - and that's with a tiny percentage of cars being electric. How is everyone going to charge their cars if 10% of vehicles are electric? 50%? We're going to need a solar farm at every corner. The writing is also on the wall with electricity prices. They just keep going up, up, up.
And solar farms are great — if you live in a place with lots of sun. If you live in the north and get a lot of clouds and snow then solar becomes a lot less reliable in the winter. Gas Still works even when solar doesn’t.

What happened to hybrids? These always seemed like great choices for many but we seemed to skip right over them for electric. I think it’s about batteries. Batteries will need replaced every 5 years or so and batteries are expensive. Car companies have gotten people hooked on leases and if batteries cost 70% of the car, just get a new car instead. In other words, they want cars to become disposable and get you hooked on yet another “subscription”, this time to cars.

Sort of like how Apple has pushed everyone to a subscription model for software? Apple fans need a cold hard dose of reality. All of this subscription madness we're seeing today is because of Apple. Apple proved that it is both easy and highly profitable to nickel and dime your customers forever, so of course everyone else wants to get in on the action.

agreed, I just want the wireless version :) for my car model and make its the 2023 model so I will have to get it later on :)

I added a USB dongle to my CarPlay and its now wireless. Some good working options for $CA 100. Check out Amazon !

I have to believe that close to 90% of people buying expensive EV’s in the US are also using iPhones. They must be getting an awfully big check from Google to be doing this.
Android Auto is also getting shafted.

GM is going at it alone, like in a blaze of glory

Apple uses a subscription for it's services not software, if i remember most of the "software" Apple has is free.

Are you sure about that, IMHO the tech industry is just trying ploys to mimic necessary forms of being entertained though subscriptions.

Never been a GM fan but the Chevy Bolt interests me as it’s easily the best deal for an EV and doesn’t look too bad. Was seriously going to consider it when it comes time to switch to EV. But without CarPlay? Not a snowballs chance…

True, but the point remains the same. Apple is the one who made subscription-everything a thing. It's pretty rich to complain about other companies wanting to generate subscription revenue while giving Apple a pass. Furthermore, all of these comments about GM wanting to charge for air conditioning and things like that are just plain stupid. We have no idea what GM is doing and we won't know for years.

I can only think of it somehow leading to GM getting subsidies or something from Google and/or Spotify. There's gotta be some kind of incentive to purposely NOT include a longstanding standard feature.

I'd say Adobe has been the main driver of subscription services. Even today, I can buy Apple SW like Pro Logic once with no sub.

Who knows, maybe GM really will build a software platform that's superior to CarPlay. Maybe pigs will also fly. :p

In the meanwhile though, is GM doing so well with EV sales that they can afford to alienate people who really like CarPlay? Somehow, I doubt it. 🤡
GM is incorporating Google built-in for the core dash and infotainment system. Even if GM relents and allows CarPlay the car will still be running Google's software to run car functions, dash, monitors and display, infotainment, gps, and anything else that can be used to build one "amazing" profile of the driver.

Edit: Oh, and don't forget about presenting ads and subscriptions services.
