The demo is not relevant. And even after the event it was only apple employees that were set up for face id.

When it hits the wild we will know if it's just markerting or if the system really works flawlessly. From Touch ID experience , wait for rev b or c

Very true. The real test will be the general consensus when it's in the wild

Anything else "oh it's definitely great" or "it's doomed" are equally unsubstantiated.

I still will miss Touch ID period. No flawless implementation can overcome that

Needs a wide angle lens for a start so it can see you at shallow angles.

As it has been said, I will only try to unlock when eyes are looking at it. I can't think of a scenario where a crowd of people would be looking at my locked phone.

As soon as you bring it to the office , you will encounter that experience after people want to see it , or a friend etc.

Day of day, it will not be an issue . You may find you phone locked at times requiring passcode.

People should probably wait to pass judgement until this is actually out there and we get to see how it works (or doesn't), regardless of whether Apple's statement is absolute truth or just spin.

If the statement is absolutely true, and the phone is always scanning whatever face comes into range... I have to wonder how well this is going to work when the user is interacting with other nearby people.

Great! Actually felt better after confirming this.

Now. It would be nice if we could turn of this "locking with 2 trials thing" all the way, and let that lock come only with several passcode trials.

Whats the problem with many trials of Face ID if it's not going to get unlocked anyway? Just let it fail to unlocked the device infinite times without locking it with passcode and that's it!

Or let us decide how many FaceID trials before locking it. But I actually can picture a lot of "more than 2 random faces at reach" scenarios that may occur and I would hate them to lock my device.

Summary: let it not be a device lock when any amount of FACE ID fails occur.

So in essence if you are the only person that ever comes near your iPhone it workes perfect. If not it's like the old days when there was only the passcode. Perfect - like magic
I’m pretty sure the phone is not scanning every face permanently. That would drain battery very fast.

I’m willing to bet the block screen needs to be active for the face scanning to work.

Okay, so if I leave my phone somewhere and I get a text, and two friends see my phone got some notification, looks at the screen and tells me "hey! I think you got a text!" then I have to passcode unlock. This would not be a problem with Touch ID.

So what this means is if I am showing a funny text on my lockscreen to my friends... the phone is going to go into "require a passcode mode" after it gets passed around to 3 of my friends before it gets back to me?

If this were Touch ID, this wouldn't be an issue. I don't think each one of my friends would be "touching the home button" of my phone with each of their fingers.
If you have already unlocked it before you pass it around, why would it lock back up? Dah.......

I have to wonder how well this is going to work when the user is interacting with other nearby people.

It will scan their faces and send the data back to Apple. If it is determined they are not an Apple user their info will be deleted from your contacts and Siri will warn you that you should cease any and all contact with that person(s).

The simple fact is Apple stuffed up...It was 100% preventable, any idiot knows you keep all props sterile that is, only for the handling by the demonstrator, for a very good reason...Idiots!! You employ idiots you get the predictable result...

The design of the theatre seems to be problematic, and idiots roam wild, and idiots like to touch and play with things...The idiot in chief of this disaster was Tim Cook, he was the MC of the show, and demonstrated poor stage management, if there was indeed a professional stage manager on site..

I am sure that there was a rehearsal before, to run through any faults, but this seems not the case, the run through would have found the fault, but a very small credit here, there was a back up device, hopefully Apple learn from this...Sadly they will not...

You want only the passcode. You can turn FaceID off and use only the passcode to unlock. What is so hard to comprehend. Just like the old days....last week.

Given this has made the news the day after, of course they were going to give a plausible explanation. It's not in their DNA to admit fault, even when you get your antenna design wrong....they never admitted it.... etc etc .

this is the problem. whatever really caused it but this will alwas be "face id fails on first ever public attempt to unlock the phone". i think it was also bad how craig reacted to it. he obviously shocked and surprised but i also don't understand how they can't make sure everything is working before they start showing the phone
Obviously you have not met Murphy.

if you looked at your lockscreen, it's already unlocked.

Hmm but they did that and gave you a notch lol. It failed and everyone saw it. Of course they will say it didn't. It's Apple, they know you will believe it.
