Why do people keep saying this? Do you actually not understand the difference between a stylus that has no other purpose than to drive primary input instead of touch, and a multi-function drawing tool that nothing to do with primary input?

Exactly.

The first part of the comment was kind of correct. Jobs initially wanted to call it the Safari Pad and really focus on the internet portal of it all. But that didn’t reach the final product because even in version one it could do a lot more than just run Safari.

As to the “stylus,” Jobs was talking about PHONES that were using little plastic styluses to operate the microscopic interfaces of non-Apple UIs. THAT is what he was talking about being a fail, for very obvious reasons. Poking at tiny buttons with a plastic stick is not optimal.

But the Apple Pencil is a VERY different thing. It’s a virtual paintbrush. It isn’t intended to run the interface. The stylus on a phone was a compromise that allowed phone makers to get away with not designing mobile specific interfaces. Apple Pencil is an elegant tool for creating art.

So yeah. That whole comparison needs to die an ignominious death. But it won’t. Someone is absolutely posting that exact comment somewhere on MacRumors right now.

That makes no sense unless they plan to add a built in kickstand. I would posit that most people use it in landscape in a case where the logo is not visible (and the cases already have it in landscape). I also have hunch, most people using a naked iPad without a keyboard are using it in portrait mode.

I use mine more or less exclusively in portrait. But yeah, it’s in a case that covers the logo.

Sure. But just imagine an iPad that’s basically just the screen of a MacBook. When it’s attached to its keyboard it’s a MacBook. When you take the screen off it’s an iPad.
There is maybe 30 people in the world who want a touch screen MacBook. If you want a touch screen laptop buy one of those windows surface pro or whatever it’s called. One of those things that is neither a good laptop or a good tablet.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want nor am I describing a touch screen MacBook. I’m talking about a hybrid system where the screen is standard non-touch while running with a keyboard and booting into macOS and an iPad running iPadOS when the keyboard is detached. A true hybrid.

I don’t want a touch screen laptop. I’m a designer. The last thing I want to do is reach up and touch my screen when I’m using a laptop or a desktop.

Quite possible that this may happen with the next version. Would also like to see some form of wireless charging

To be honest it's not that hard to imagine. The problem being it's still an "iPad". The only way we're going to get it done like that is if the Pro model gets handed to the MacBook department.

Like many pointed out before, the iPad is a media consumption device first. The MacBook is a productivity device first. The goal is to have us buy two devices. The iPad Pro unfortunately is born from the first, has power to be productive, but doesn't have the software for it to make full use of the hardware.

When you have "iPads should be iPads" and "MacBooks should be MacBooks" camps entrenched into their own silos, that in-between machine is never going to happen.

I don't care. It could be upside down or inside out for what it's worth.
I want an iPad with nanotexture glass, but don't need the 1TB size. They should offer nanotextutre to all sizes as an option.

French website Numerama interviewed three senior Apple employees about the new iPad Pro models that launched earlier this month. While the discussion did not reveal many new details, it did mention one potential change for future iPads.

While the Apple logo on the back of iPads is positioned so that it appears upright in vertical orientation, the devices are often used in landscape orientation with a keyboard attached, which results in the Apple logo appearing on its side. Apple even moved the front camera to the longer right-side edge on the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, so that it appears at the top-center when the devices are in landscape orientation.

With landscape usage becoming increasingly popular, Apple product designer Molly Anderson said a landscape Apple logo is a possibility on future iPads.

"I think it could change," said Anderson, per a computer translation of the French-language interview. "We are thinking about it. The iPad has long been a product that is used in portrait mode, but we are using it more and more in landscape mode."

On the software side, Apple already began showing the Apple logo that appears when an iPad is booting up in a landscape position starting with iPadOS 14.5, when the device is in landscape orientation. With Apple seemingly open to making the change on the hardware side too, it will be something to look for on future iPads.

I use the iPad on portrait mode 90% of time. The only time I do not is when my hands are busy same I use the folio case stand

Modbook was a thing for about 10 years and I'm pretty sure they sold a few more, despite being super clumsy and expensive.

No I don't want a touch screen laptop just like I don't want a folding phone. Doesn't change the fact that there is a significant market for both.

Imagine an iPad line up.

  • iPad Pro 11” and 13” with dual boot to Mac OS when docked and two USB C ports. And landscape Apple logos.
  • iPad 11” and 13” with A series chips (but of the new Air design).
  • iPad mini with a series.

I think ad hoc use is still often in portrait position.

This feels like a battle they can't win and regardless how they do it, about half the time it'll look "wrong".

You mean to say they didn't rotate it for this one? The one that they harped on about rotating the camera so you can use it in landscape mode?! Oh boy...

I have always used my iPads in landscape mode, from when they first came out. Much easier.

I wonder how much Apple would charge for that iPad Pro with dual boot and two USB ports? Heck, throw in the 3.5 mm headphone jack. I’m betting that would not sell well.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is a perfect example of the brand power of Apple.

We're not even talking about changing the logo or changing any functionality, only about the orientation of the logo on the back and yet it's a newsworthy story that's been commented on over 245 times

What other company gets attention (and scrutiny) like this? Only Apple
