To each their own. I find no use for it and the idea of something always listening doesn’t make it better.

So you will never in the future ever be interested in any robot or AI device for the home as you are scared it's beaming back information about what you are doing?

These things are not for everyone, but sometimes it's just easier to ask something from your comfy position than go getting your phone.

:)

I didn’t know Amazon makes a speaker with room analysis and real-time acoustical modeling. Can you point out which model does that?

Nope, but Google Home MAX is coming Dec 11 with Google assistant. I suspect Max is the real reason for the delay. Apple is already late to the game, Siri V. Google assistant isn't really fair, and maybe Apple went to the Google demo and decided to start over. Who the hell knows?

And Google is about to flood the market. Google Home mini will be $19 on Black Friday. An absolute steal for this product.

'Hey Google, play ESPN on living room TV'

If you have a Chromecast & Youtube TV this actually works! And it's faster than the damn remote.

I'm really looking forward to seeing reviews of the Google Home Max.
Everyone knows how MASSIVELY out in front the Google Home is when it comes to dealing with answering any questions put to it.
Yes, they still have a lot of work to do. Mainly improving the access to Google Calendar.
I have both the Amazon Echo and the Google Home.

Google Home Max has the best speaker of anything, better than the Apple device that's coming.
But yes, it is also expensive.

Really keen to see how they compare from an Audio Perspective, as Google's will kill Apple from an AI point of view.

You can easily unplug and take it from room to room or elsewhere, so I'd say it has portability to it yes. It's not a battery powered boom box, no. But it's not a traditional speaker that is "permanently" wired to a receiver either. It's also not a 75lb 1920s-style room radio.

Okay . Portable for me is battery support
From mains . It's just another speaker otherwise

Google Home Max AI smart speaker = Pixel 2 camera in the Pixel. Delicious software!

They better delay it, and do something worthy of Apple customers.

No more of early release **** as in iOS 11, please.

It will definitely sound better and louder than the homepod. Just look at the designs and size difference. I'm excited for the homemax!

And personal music players. Apple was doomed then as well.
But with the iPod and iPhone, Apple's products were so radically different and better that they instantly made all their predecessors obsolete.

That won't be the case with this HomePod. Even if it is a better product than the Echo and Google Home, nothing about it suggests it will be anything more than another speaker with a voice assistant (maybe with a little better sound quality and a little worse voice assistant)

Meanwhile Echo is stealing marketshare that will be hard to win back

I'm interested both as an airplay speaker and as a HomeKit hub. I don't watch TV, so having AppleTV as a HomeKit hub didn't make sense to me. I don't use Siri because I don't talk to objects if I can help it. HomeKit hub plus speaker makes sense for me, no matter the quality of Siri. But now it's March, not December. Dang it.

Yeah, like they missed the boat on smartphones.

When will people get that Apple doesn’t care about being first. They care about getting it right.

I'm sorry I just don't see this part about "getting it right". High Sierra and iOS 11 both were released to make deadlines and have so many problems that they should never have been released. While these kind of things happened in the past, the volume of the problems is dwarfing to anything in the past.

The same people willing to fork out (depending on Applecare+ / storage / tax) $1000 - $1500 on a iPhone X won't have any qualms about dropping $300+ on a Homepod.

The difference being that the iPhone is considered the pinnacle of smartphone technology right now for most of those people.

Homepod not so much, this product was about to get slaughtered by Home Max & Apple knew that.

Hardly. Google AI is better, but there’s no way the Max can achieve the same real-time modeling the HomePod can. Not with their boring (conventional) front facing drivers.

Based on the fact that there have been ZERO leaks showing parts or production or anything similar, I wouldn't be holding my breath for a December release. When TC introduced it at the key note in June, it was almost like it was just a concept at that time... a pipe dream that'd happen only if they were able to overcome 10+ issues that come with packing such power into a space that small. Time will tell, but if it follows their trend of release delays as of late, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Ha. Yeah...breath not held.
I never thought it was really real until the pages on apple.com. Then I was like "well dang, maybe they really are making this thing."
As you wrote, time will tell.

Did some test listening to the Sonos One in Best Buy yesterday. It lacks good bass but otherwise sounded pretty good. I suspect the HomePod will sound better. But: $199 vs. $349. OUCH!

I was going to wait for the HomePod but I'm tired of waiting. I plan to bring a Sonos One home this week to try it out. If it suits my needs then I'll get 4 more for other rooms.

And 1 lens on a smartphone just can't compete with...

Are you really going to question Google's smart sound algorithm?

Homepod was delayed for a reason, because it's most likely vaporware.

Well, if you can't wait you can always get a Google or Amazon data-gathering device....um...I mean a Google Assistant or Amazon Echo.

Should also check out the Libratone Zipps... they are portable compared to the Sonos. I didn’t buy up the Zipps, but I have the Mini.. two of them.

I was going to buy Sonos, when I did some research and stumbled upon Libratone... which I’m glad I did, I like the flexibility it provides and the sound is awesome.

It's a 2 edged sword, sure they gather data - but the experience is so superior to Siri that you have to question Apple's long term strategy when it comes to AI.

I'm not sure a product such as Alexa and Google Assistant is possible without mining some data. The experience is night and day.

Like to have been in Tim's office when they told him it would not be ready for the Christmas/Holiday period.
