I do admit that if this happened to Android I'd say "see, that's why android sucks ass so much". Shame, this shouldn't happen. Not at this level.
I am in no way excusing this cluster**** of a release, but...
An update is a software fix, it's not a Christmas present. Why would someone randomly apply the patch if they needed their smartphone for something important that morning? If there is something good that can come from this mess, it would be to get people to think about what they're doing.
I can't believe it has not been said yet: Steve would've NEVER allowed this.
In all seriousness, iOS8 on my iPhone 6 Plus is ridiculously buggy.
I wonder how many people updated? I only manually checked for an update after reading that 8.0.1 was out. Not one of my devices notified me of a new update. Anyway, I guess I'm lucky that 8.0.1 worked fine on my Plus OTA, I wonder if it was a certain setup/configuration that caused the issue. I guess we will never know.
Apple, Samsung and Microsoft have all done this before. Apple with iOS 7.0.6, Samsung with the Note ICS update and Microsoft with the WP7 Omnia update. I don't expect this to be the last case of borked firmware.

That's too slow, it should have been out yesterday. Now people can't use their new phones as phones.
he be ded.
I truly wish I had an extra iPhone where I had the forethought to download 8.0.1 as it will be the rarest Apple firmware ever and down the road would be a collectors item!
(Especially if that same iPhone had FlappyBird also installed on it. . .)
PS: The above screenshot with 69% battery is not a mere coincidence.
How about a simple apology in the support document?
I'm not sure why 8.0.2 is "in the works".
Tim, please tell your engineer to use time machine and revert to 8.0, rename it and push it out as 8.0.2? Problem fixed? or am I missing something.

AMEN TO THAT!!!
nobody will bring his car to upgrade engine the day he has important meetings around the city... Why not keeping same thinking methodology for the phone?
If you use your phone for business or its mission critical then don't update right away. This update was live for a couple of hours at most. People act like they lost out on the winning lottery tickets because of this.
If you're using your phone for business in a manner where not having a phone is a major issue your IT department should have guidelines, and you should have enough brain cells to rub together to create a spark that doesn't rush towards something that isn't tested within your own business environment.

Maybe you need a different OS ecosystemApple need new directors.
- iOS 8.0.1 issue - huge issue.
- Chinese voiceover issue during the media event.
- Streaming issue during the media event.
- Ugly antenna band - needs new designers.
- Bendgate - should have analyzed the structure.
- Ad - did you see the "bigger" ad?
1. An update is a software fix? Did you even read the article your commenting on?!!!!! LOL.
2. Yes, we are silly to assume Apple would give us an update that wouldn't disable the phone feature on an iPhone.
Or maybe Apple, the billion dollar company, should improve their QA to make sure that when they release a software update it's not going to disable cell service, Touch ID, etc.
I mean come on, you can post superior comments about the update all you want, but it's pretty ridiculous that it broke people's phones to the extent that they couldn't even use them as phones.
What do you mean why would people apply a patch if they needed their smartphone for something important the next day? Probably because the current iOS they have is buggy and they (as the rest of consumers) thought it would fix something but instead caused more problems. Some of you guys are biased as **** man, seriously.
