I am in no way excusing this cluster**** of a release, but...

An update is a software fix, it's not a Christmas present. Why would someone randomly apply the patch if they needed their smartphone for something important that morning? If there is something good that can come from this mess, it would be to get people to think about what they're doing.

AMEN TO THAT!!!

nobody will bring his car to upgrade engine the day he has important meetings around the city... Why not keeping same thinking methodology for the phone?

I can't believe it has not been said yet: Steve would've NEVER allowed this.
;)

In all seriousness, iOS8 on my iPhone 6 Plus is ridiculously buggy.

In all seriousness, the halls of Apple HQ would flow with blood if this happened while he was CEO. But it probably wouldn't happen, because he kept the lid on bozo eruptions.

On the bright side, at least it didn't brick the iPhones. Can you imagine if millions of new iPhone 6 buyers had to go to Apple stores or send their new phones into Apple for a fix? LOL, the board would fire Cook if that were the case.

I wonder how many people updated? I only manually checked for an update after reading that 8.0.1 was out. Not one of my devices notified me of a new update. Anyway, I guess I'm lucky that 8.0.1 worked fine on my Plus OTA, I wonder if it was a certain setup/configuration that caused the issue. I guess we will never know.

Apple, Samsung and Microsoft have all done this before. Apple with iOS 7.0.6, Samsung with the Note ICS update and Microsoft with the WP7 Omnia update. I don't expect this to be the last case of borked firmware.

lmao people...you made sure to tie everyone in on this

2. Yes, we are silly to assume Apple would give us an update that wouldn't disable the phone feature on an iPhone.

That's too slow, it should have been out yesterday. Now people can't use their new phones as phones.

Wait, you mean people are holding these new iPhones to their greasy faces and talking into them with spittle flying out all over the screen? We're not even supposed to put these delicate masterpieces in our pockets - how could anyone walk around with one up to his mouth? Disgusting!

If Apple had even 1/8th as bad of policy as people put on their personal decisions they'd have been auctioned off long ago.

If you use your phone for business or its mission critical then don't update right away. This update was live for a couple of hours at most. People act like they lost out on the winning lottery tickets because of this.

If you're using your phone for business in a manner where not having a phone is a major issue your IT department should have guidelines, and you should have enough brain cells to rub together to create a spark that doesn't rush towards something that isn't tested within your own business environment.

The update itself isn't bad. This is two models of phone that people have had for 5 days, and seems to be those who updated OTA. I've been telling people for years not to update OTA. I updated through iTunes, and my 6 on 8.0.1 works just fine. Better than 8.0. Always update through iTunes. Im amazed people see an update is posted, and rush to get it OTA. Don't update OTA. The same **** has been happening for YEARS. The vast majority of people that have problems with a new release are OTA updates. Don't do it.

I truly wish I had an extra iPhone where I had the forethought to download 8.0.1 as it will be the rarest Apple firmware ever and down the road would be a collectors item!
(Especially if that same iPhone had FlappyBird also installed on it. . .)

PS: The above screenshot with 69% battery is not a mere coincidence.

Also If it was bent and had survived a few drop tests as well then you could write your own cheque.....

I'm not sure why 8.0.2 is "in the works".

Tim, please tell your engineer to use time machine and revert to 8.0, rename it and push it out as 8.0.2? Problem fixed? or am I missing something.

I disagree. What happened today was like taking your car for an oil change and the attendant forgetting to put the oil filter on right, causing your car to stall a mile away because it lost all its oil.

Or maybe Apple, the billion dollar company, should improve their QA to make sure that when they release a software update it's not going to disable cell service, Touch ID, etc.

I mean come on, you can post superior comments about the update all you want, but it's pretty ridiculous that it broke people's phones to the extent that they couldn't even use them as phones.

Because Apple difference is that they have full control on HW & SW ?Because it should 'just work' ?

What do you mean why would people apply a patch if they needed their smartphone for something important the next day? Probably because the current iOS they have is buggy and they (as the rest of consumers) thought it would fix something but instead caused more problems. Some of you guys are biased as **** man, seriously.

And why the **** would the patch be there if it causes another issue? Does Apple pay you?

Apple need new directors.

- iOS 8.0.1 issue - huge issue.
- Chinese voiceover issue during the media event.
- Streaming issue during the media event.
- Ugly antenna band - needs new designers.
- Bendgate - should have analyzed the structure.
- Ad - did you see the "bigger" ad?
Maybe you need a different OS ecosystem ;)

Then go ahead, ignore my advice, and run the updates as soon as they show up. It may work, it may break an app that is important to you, it may run down your battery faster than normal, it may brick your phone, or like today it may just kill the cellular part of your cell phone.

LOL see what I mean! These guys are ride or die with Apple.

What about the owners, like me, who had no issues installing the 8.01 update?
I guess since 8.01 is no longer signed my phone will continue to work until 8.02.
Man this has been a week for Apple! Hope the stock doesn't fall to much, I was going to sell some and buy some toys.

LOL @ Apple

This is just hilarious. One fail after the other. Cook needs to get his **** together and fire a lot of people.

1) The talent behind the iWatch UI, aside from the home screen/watchfaces, is lacking. That smiley and those buttons looked terrible.
2) The new iPhones are terrible. The designs look cheap and many of us are not interested in a larger phone. The bending is simply embarrassing. You cannot release something like that. Bending is much worse than antenna attenuation.
3) If you release something for OTA you better check the **** out of it. I mean seriously, WTF. For me, iOS 8 isn't out until they jailbreak it, anyway, but for all those new/noob apple users, this is a terrible experience.
4) Apple is gobbling up way too many companies and services. The larger a company gets, the harder it is to keep organized and in order and reactive. Apple's mantra has always been do a few things but do them right. Today we see a reactionary Apple that feels the need to compete with Google and Samsung and Microsoft and every other hardware/software company out there. This is a losing battle. As a long time Apple user, I could give a **** what samsung releases. The elements are all there in the tech world and Apple under Steve was able to keep its pulse on what the user needed. Apple should not feed into the features of the competitors but should continue to address the needs of the users. If Cook can't navigate this new titanic apple in the right direction then people will abandon ship.

There has been a lot of flux in the teams, especially the iPhone team. Another thing that Tim Cook lacks is the ability to scout talent. This friendly company guy CEO Tim Cook is not someone I would trust to be cut throat with hiring...

That's not what I said, don't put words in my mouth.

I said don't update your phone at 8AM if you need it that day and don't have any way to revert back.

Or not. It's no skin off my butt if your phone is bricked because you rushed to apply an update while you were at work, and now your kid's babysitter can't reach you.
