For those of you saying this is Apple making it sound like something it's not, they could have constrained supplies on the 8 too if it was all just for marketing hype. They didn't. MacRumors has turned into HateEverythingMac anymore in these forums. Conspiracy theories are definitely not in short supply on here. I figured the conspiracy people would be busy with the released JFK files but I guess they took a break to show up here.

Anyone else still waiting for that email about the reservation?
I received my reservation email about 2 hours and 28 minutes after placing my order. I tried my darnedest to get in on the first wave but by the time I was able to place the order ship times had slipped to 2-3 weeks. I'll be happy if that is the case.

I was on the Apple Store App reloading until 3:15 or whatever when it finally went live, went through all the ******** to have it tell me "oh! you're an AT&T phone, put in your account information to transfer to this new iPhone!" (or whatever) - it's a business account, and it wouldn't let me do that. All i wanted to do was pay money, and get a device. I put my existing sim card in and it works. By the time i backed out and selected the t-mobile option (since it's factory unlocked anyway) my ship time slipped to 4-5 weeks.

just because you can do some stupid verification **** with at&t doesn't mean it should be required.

Maybe, just maybe and I know I’m going to sound as if I should be sectioned.

But just perhaps there were people who were able to look past the loss of Touch ID and the apparently ugly “notch” (I actually like it compared to the alternative) and see the iPhone X for what it is. A bloody good device.

Haters gonna hate, but I personally think the X has a lot going for it over the standard iPhones.

You didn't read what Apple said - they said "demand" was off the charts. They gave no indication about how many physical units would be delivered on launch day - just because initial stock is sold out doesn't mean people aren't sill ordering them. So when they say demand is off the charts they are comparing the iPhone X demand to all its predecessors. This has nothing to do with initial supply.

Fair enough. But was is baseline for the "charts"? Still typical, hollow Apple spin. Sorry, feeling a bit grumpy toward Apple of late. :)

My hope is that the iPhone 9 will have the features of the iPhone X plus better cameras and A12 next year. I will classify this iPhone X as the iPad 3 with its short time on the market before the next model comes out.
I have wondered about this - time will tell...
Original iPhone - iconic, but underpowered, and the 3GS was much improved.
iPhone 4 - fantastic new design, but in retrospect underpowered. 4S was the winner.
iPhone 6/6+ - finally larger screens. Sold like hotcakes. In retrospect, gimped by 1GB RAM.
iPhone X - ???

This is honestly such a big part of their marketing. Constraining supply to increase demand, not only in the short term but for the product as a whole.

Imagine if the iPhone was readily available to pick up? It removes the “exclusivity” of it very quickly.

Edit: They are of course having manufacturing issues, but even if they weren’t, you know they’d issue the same statement.

This is partial true. Look at the iPhone 8 you could get those in like a week or two with a walk in no issue. The Wall Street rags poured the doom and gloom like it was a monsoon on apple. Why, because they did not have stock outs and no lines. They have no idea if apple just had a stash so large it was prepared this time. They wanted to see massive stock outs. So yes it is part of the marketing push but it is not 100% directed at consumers of the products it is directed at the market. They want to see that apple is busting at the seems with sales and appear to be overloaded.

The fact is the 8 was a massive phone launch was it iPhone 7 no. It was half or more of that and they could make a whole stock pile of them as the tooling was all the same and the process was refined. The markets just saw no stock outs danger no growth from zero data points.

I think apple would rather have so many X's that every one got one as soon as the wanted them so it drove foot traffic from word of mouth. They want them out in the population in mass as quickly as possible to get more people to buy.

I think it’s funny that I ordered at 12:04 for t-mobile space grey 256gb, and got a ship date of 11-17. But the chart says nov 3rd. I think Tmobile sales out did every other carrier as you don’t need an account to order.

I think it's safe to say the quick sellout is a combination of very strong demand and constrained supply working as marketing.

It's ridiculous to say Apple had very few units and was unable to meet a low demand.

Regardless of how you feel about the iPhone X, this is sending a big message to Apple - and other companies - that we, the public, are okay with phones costing more than $1000/£1000 etc.

If the innovation is right. And more importantly, if the marketing is right, the future is for very expensive handheld devices, with extensive functionality, including being a phone.

Lol....that's what happens when you have a short supply.
I'm sure somewhere, a man or kid with a garage of components can legitimately say the demand for his own custom phones was 20X the iPhone X.... 100 people asked for it, but he only has the time and materials to make 5 of them :p:D

except every quarter they list actual iPhone sales so they aren't really hiding anything. if sales aren't better than last year then we know they were spinning. if they are better then they aren't spinning . i don't recall Apple saying iPhone 7S sales were off the charts. they didn't say iPhone 8 sales were off the chart.

It's easy to appear "off the charts" when the "chart" shows minimal stock available in the first place. Apple is always good with the spin, although this same spin, year after year, is becoming tiresome. I am REALLY hoping for SOMETHING truly new and amazing from Apple soon. Just not sure they have that mojo anymore.
Apparently you have direct access to the minimal stock numbers? If you don't then join the long list of conspiracy theorists of which there are many on these forums. If this was truly Apple's tactic why didn't they employ it with the iPhone 8? The fact is Apple wants to sell every single iPhone they can as quickly as they can. It's as simple as that.

The more I look at it, the more I think the notch is unbalanced, as in too wide.

It’d look better if it was about a third of the display width such that it’s the same width as the extra bit on each side - a nice harmony and balance.

Instead it looks to be about half the display width, maybe slightly more even, making it about twice the size of each ear/horn/flap or whatever you want to call them. If they got Touch ID to work under the screen they wouldn’t have needed such a wide notch to fit all that facial recognition stuff.

It looks like they’re struggling to fit all the status icons in the available space.

Time to focus on the next generation iphone x (rumored) or next samsung s9 plus.
I'll be dropping a large sum of money on mac pro.

This ludicrous spin on the short supply is the same old thing every year; except now we have given Apple and Samsung the okay to charge $1000 for new phones (and silly me paid into that bs with a 7+.)

For everyone who ordered the X, I hope it's worth that price point and much, much more.

Gah pretty much same thing happened here. 5-6 weeks delivery. Hopefully I can snag one in November at an Apple store.
