There are almost 500 Apple Stores worldwide.

My bad.

I googled 'Apple Stores Number' and the result that came back was 361.

Maybe that's a U.S. number?

So much for supply issues. In the past Apple has limited launch to a smaller number of countries and then added additional countries every week or two.

What good is it to launch in 55 countries if there’s massive shortages everywhere? Better to limit to a smaller number of countries and make sure they have sufficient stock so as not to upset people by not having stock.
Is it possible that things went worse than planned in the time between them announcing the 55 countries and today?

What's wrong with starting with Wikipedia for such type of information? (498 total, 271 in the US). Might Wikipedia be off by couple of stores? Sure, but I trust its editors more than fuzzy logic (aka Google).

Nope. Its still just a phone.
If they sell the one they've just bought on Ebay, it might feel as if they had struck gold.

Why would they do this unless they specifically want to generate big queues like in the old days? I think when they said they didn't want to encourage big queues they were fibbing a bit.
Why would they do what, exactly? Sell their phones? Of course they are going to sell their phones in their brick and mortar shops. Cook answered an interview question honestly. I mean when he sidesteps, people call him on it. When he answers a question point blank people look for ulterior motive. Until Apple decides their stores are nothing more than show rooms it makes absolute sense to sell their new products in store.

I see folks frustrated that these aren't ALL allocated to online stock. Why should a launch day item be restricted to online only orders? That completely screws some folks out of the IUP program, for example.

Lines at stores??
Angela’s gonna be pissed. :p

I’m glad. That is the one thing in the Apple 3.0 era that I think they got wrong. The comradere of the launch day lines is an option I personally enjoyed.
Well I don’t know the lady so it’s possible you’re right.

But another possibility:

I can’t imagine she lacks intelligence. She has been at Apple long enough now to get a feel for its lore, its culture and learn how to manipulate it to her and Apple’s advantage. Getting lines at some of her most prestigious flagships will be a great way to show off the reinvented stores. And it’s not like she has to personally mingle with the unwashed masses. The media takes the pictures of Apple loyalists camping out for the new exciting Anniversary IPhone once again and voila, she’s getting credit for launch day success at her beautiful new retail concept stores.

I do for some launches. It’s really a great experience to meet people and socialize. The energy at these launches are amazing.

The energy used to be amazing. Now it's more depressing. Standing in line is not that much fun any more.

Gonna try and preorder but how does waiting in line work?

If I can't get a good date for a preorder I was gonna camp out at my Verizon store... but it's in a mall. Do you wait outside the mall or will they let you in to wait next to the store?

The 2 malls I used to go to in Pittsburgh made you wait outside the mall. The lines would wrap halfway around the building. Then about 15 minutes before Apple would open, they would open the doors to the mall and we would line up again. So you could theoretically lose your spot going from line 1 outside to line 2 inside.

makes m
That seems like an awfully long list of countries for something so limited.

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully it won't be as limited as rumors claim. If it's anything like the jet black 7, I think that bodes well for sales of both the X and 8/plus.

Maybe they decided not to constrain the number of launch countries this time to send the message once and for all that Apple is not an American Company anymore but a global one with a commitment to providing equal level of access and service to all countries in which it has a retail presence. It would fall in line with what Tim Cook has actually been saying for quite awhile now, especially to China.

Could be, but Apple hasn't had a U.S.-only launch for many years. But some launches have been constrained to Apple's top 10 markets because of inventory. The X launch country list has a pretty long list there. All I'm saying is that if Apple were to spread inventory too thin then it doesn't help it's cause. It could be trying to say, "hey, we are a true international company with customer's worldwide," but if they are inviting customers in these countries to the store on launch day and have no inventory then that message is lost because a launch day country w/ no phones and 2nd wave launch country will effectively be the same thing; a distinction with no real difference.

I'm no different than anyone else here regarding what Apple's true inventory and product level is. I'm just taking both sides and speculating what might happen in either situation. I can't believe Apple would expand it's launch just out of goodwill if it didn't have product to support that enlarged launch roster.

I guess. I find it amazing that people will pay ridiculous amount of money over the already ridiculous 1K for this rather than wait for a couple of weeks or a month.

Folks on here need to smarten up. This is beyond an Apple sales tactic. For at least 6 months now I’ve been reading articles posted regarding “supply constraints” (and theyve mainly pointed to OLED display production as the issue).

I’m wondering... has Apple issued any blackout dates that their employees are exempt from taking off for this launch? I haven’t seen anything

I have a feeling that if you manage to buy one on launch, and then eBay it, you'll be able to pay off your mortgage.....

That's my goal. Yes, people will hate me for it but if I can get someone to pay for half of the one I'll keep in a few months, why not. I actually do craigslist for cash. I've heard a lot of horror stories about eBay buyers scamming you, unless you have a tried and true method to keep yourself safe, please share.

people like you say something like this every year and you're always proven wrong. The supply chain has be reporting that supply will be low - we have had many documented accounts of this from various manufacturers. There is no doubt that supply's will be low - Apple doesn't have to make this up. From surveys we already know that demand is extremely high for this phone - Apple doesn't need to make demand - it's already there. The only reason they're doing this is because supplies will be low, initial sales will also be low and Apple doesn't want Wall ST. freaking out - they want them to visibly see the lines which indicate high demand. They are doing this to appease Wall St.
Come on dude, Apple plays this game every year, its frankly getting old. This phone will sell good for the first month than bomb out the remainder. Not many people are out there looking to shell $1100+ bucks for a phone, you can see evidence in that by how well last year's iphone 7 is selling. Plus now you got much tougher competition with the Android phones than previous years too with much lower prices.

Here’s the thing. The people who think/thought the price tag is outrageous are ALWAYS the most vocal. What you didn’t hear were alllllll the people who think the phone is so cool that the price isn’t a factor. Hence, Apple will sell every single one that they make and there will be lines and records broken.

A lot of people were probably embarrassed to post online that they are going to drop $1,000 for the iPhone X. It’s easier for people to bash it.

Dead on.

Apple today announced that stores will have iPhone X available for walk-in customers, who it encourages to arrive early, on launch day. Presumably, this will include both Apple's own retail locations and select authorized resellers.

iPhone X will go on sale in more than 55 countries and territories on Friday, November 3. On the same day, the first deliveries will begin to customers. iPhone X pre-orders begin this Friday, October 27 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time.

Due to a mix of reported production issues and strong demand, in-store availability of iPhone X will likely be extremely limited. Prospective buyers should be prepared for the possibility of waiting in long lines.

In a recent interview with BuzzFeed News, Apple CEO Tim Cook said "we'll see what happens" in regards to iPhone X availability. "We'll be working as hard as possible to make as many as possible," he added.

In Canada on Bell for a 64gb on a two year contract the phone will be $599, the next level on two year term $799, already posted prices on their website

They just want to create another crowd effect. How are they going to ensure availability launching it in 50 countries simultaneously? We also need to factor in the previously rumoured component shortage and Apple’s own iPhone Upgrade Program, where people in the US can already get their early pre-approvals.
