Can somebody explain why X is allowed on the App Store? It’s full of porn. I don’t understand this double standard.
where do you draw the line? no other browsers are allowed on the App Store because they can visit porn? should apple delete Safari because their own browser can visit porn sites? what about movies/tv shows that have explicit sex scenes? what if you save porn movies into Apple Photos?

Apple should ban Safari. It can access all of the nefarious contents on the web. You know, the worst porn on earth. The illegal stuff. Bad Safari. Ah, a great idea, how about setting up the Great Firewall of America so that we can filter out all the porn and conveniently some other stuffs too like contents that are not politically correct?

What if Ford and GM were the only two brands available? That is essentially what you have now with Apple and Android.
If GM doesn't do the thing you want, but Ford does, you buy the Ford.

And if there's large number of people that don't like GM and Ford, a new car company will be born and offer the thing that people want. If enough people buy it, they survive. If not enough people buy it, clearly there wasn't a large enough demand for that one feature, contrary to what people might think.

If there was only one company like Ford that is actively trying to destroy new car companies from trying to compete, that would be illegal (monopoly).

This is how it has always worked.

Car companies are started every day. Car companies fail every second day.

Just because Apple and Google have a stranglehold on western phone OS’s doesn’t stop other companies starting up. Apple aren’t trying to ‘crush’ them. People are so paranoid about Apple.

Apple have worked alongside Microsoft for decades for example. And they’re worked alongside Google and Qualcomm and many other companies who they still compete with.

So I agree with you. Apple isn’t a monopoly. Google isn’t a monopoly and they are both trying to increase a market share to increase value. But they work alongside each other and are definitely not acting as a monopoly to prevent other companies from forming or competing.

Disputes from the likes of Spotify and Epic are about them wanting to be treated differently to other companies and it’s nothing about acting like a monopoly.

Cause Tim has never viewed porn before. Nor anyone else at Apple. They're all about freedom until it comes to kids losing their phones due to porn apps. But then you have browsers so... wow.

I guess adults don’t want to be treated like minors. Apple should not be like Disney.

As a European citizen, this Porn app or the whole AltStore debacle makes me so sad. They sold us freedom of choice, but all we got is a crappy new store with a porn app and a game emulator. Is this the best developers can do when the walled garden is torn down? Don’t make me laugh.

Please, EU, give me a real choice. The choice to keep everything the way it was! Nobody is using it. Give it two years, and it will be completely dead.
I wouldn't be super hopeful. Alternate stores have already been available for Android for years. And while Google doesn't have nearly the same standards, it still has some. Yet hardly any of those alternate stores have any traction in the West, even Amazon's. (They actually gave up on promoting it for non-Amazon devices a long time ago.) I don't expect Epic to fare much better.

…thereby approving them for running on consumers’ devices distribution.

They don’t have to.
Again: Apple chose to require their (Apple’s) approval - their checks and signing the app.
When they could’ve easily chosen a hands-off approach and not interfere at all instead.
Firstly, Apple is forced to approve the apps, as long as they do not have malware, and other malicious entities within the application. That's what approval refers to. Second, Apple has for long forbid pornography on their app stores. The fact that EU celebrates taking away this freedom, and encouraging for alternative app stores, speaks volumes
I really hope you are a parody account and not a authentically opinionated one, for making these dumb statements

You conveniently "ignore" i answered to your claim "What is stopping someone from side loading an app specifically for drug dealing, or something worse?"

Sorry. Didn't mean to. It was meant as rhetorical. But to answer properly, if people want to go 'looking' for stuff we know they can. Even WhatsApp is used for that kind of stuff. But by having an app that is effectively advertising illegal services or products (and remember what is legal in one country isn’t necessarily legal in another) circumvents that without strict geo restrictions having to be enacted. Morality laws differ greatly.

I even look at the U.S. with a drinking age of 21 (mainly) and Australia being 18. Some countries allow taking of drugs, for recreation, or health. Others either don’t, or restrict them with legislative conditions.

And of course the extension for that is if Apple allow (because they have to) these apps to be present on their system, they then become responsible for the function, or disabling them, in the exact same way Google/Apple were responsible if TikTok was still made available in the U.S. when it was banned. I simply cannot fathom the app store responsible would be the only one required to enforce that.

A platform should be allowed to apply its own moral code (as Disney and Apple do on their networks) and restrict apps that breach that moral code. The EU's carte blanche attitude to this wasn’t well thought out, unless it was designed to create problems. But won’t go into that because this isn’t a political thread.

Good for you apple for not sweeping this under the rug.
I’m assuming Apple’s team anticipated this all along and already has a solid plan in place—otherwise, they ought to find new legal counsel.

Not sure why you say that - not allowing porn apps seems to have worked out really well for Apple so far. Not sure the EU forcing them to sign off on porn changes that.

Apple! Progressive enough to have an openly homosexual CEO, yet regressive enough to think that sex and sexuality are evil.
Or maybe, just maybe, they don’t think it’s evil but don’t want to be in the business of selling it.

So much overreacting here

This is going to have no impact on anything at all

Some will download AltStore for this app, almost everyone will not ... meanwhile the Earth will continue to spin as people continue their normal access to porn on their iPhone or iPad through a web browser

This whole topic is such a mountain out of a molehill situation

Apple doesn't "approve" of porn ... oh no!
I don't "approve" of how Tim spends his political dollars ... that also means bubkes

Who said anything about Apple selling porn? This app isn't even in Apple's app store (it's in a third-party app store), so how's Apple selling anything here?
You’re the one claiming “Apple is regressive enough to think sex and sexuality is evil” - presumably because until they haven’t allowed porn apps on iOS. Have a source for that?

What’s more likely, Apple are a bunch of prides who hate sex, or they simply don’t want their products and intellectual property associated with porn apps and so are upset that a bunch of bureaucrats are forcing them to facilitate that in a misguided attempt to protect their citizens from being able to choose a closed, integrated ecosystem.
