I didn't see the original article mention this LG monitor. It also has USB-C, 4k and 27". Wouldn't this work for the new MBPs as well? http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27UD88-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor

Yes it will work but that's a sRGB monitor (8-bit color) and not P3 (10-bit) like those on Apple's site.
Not that it matters unless you're doing Photo/Video editing.

LG Makes OLED displays, do you think this partnership might actually be mildly beneficial to Apple and the Laptop/iMac business?

There was probably some knowledge sharing with the new Touch Bar and with the Apple Watch. Apple would like to share in their technologies. Makes sense.

I wish they'd do this with the Mac Pro. Just 'partner' with HP or Dell to make a Xeon tower that runs macOS - a kind of officialised Hackintosh.

All it would take is a flash of the firmware inside and a "MacOS Inside" sticker..... Outside.

I really hate always being right. First step in exiting desktops all together. They simply don't need it and don't care.

Apple will ultimately become a brand. Acquired by another, decades from now.

This isn't a comfortable product for Apple to be in, don't even know why they did get in monitors business in the first place...LG and Samsung control that market and I lean more towards LG for better quality

I love my Thunderbolt displays because of how simple and easy they are to connect - Having the charging cable and Thunderbolt basically as one cable is outstanding and simple. I've yet to find a third party monitor that's half as simple and smooth and acts as a true hub like the Thunderbolt display.

Sad day.

The LG is far better, as it has triple USB-C ports and includes camera, mic, and speakers. And powers the MBP through the single TB3 cable. But I agree it would have been nicer to have it in an iMac-like case.

Sad day, those cinema displays were the best looking monitors, especially the older Matte all aluminum look cinema displays.
And nobody has a nicer stand than those cinema displays.

Thanks for the reply. Will any monitor that supports USB-C do video and power passthrough? I assume if I connect a new MBP to the monitor via USB-C it will display the screen, charge/power the laptop and also be a port replicator.

Can all these people that apparently can just talk to apple ANd get a response .. also ask them about the desktop lineup, or the other obvious questions we've had for three years.

Or do we limit it to todays marketing keywords only?

Apple can't decide if they want to be an ecosystem or not.

Oh, they want to be an ecosystem, they just want to be the one's to define how and where and why and anyone else be damned.

Hmmm. I'd be open to Apple partnering with other vendors for Mac's in the future too after the last few days!

Microsoft Hackintosh for the win

There's always Dell and Eizo, too. -It's all about the color gamuts and frame rates. Otherwise, you might as well buy a huge 4k TV and a calibrator, then sit back a ways and enjoy your TV/retina display: http://isthisretina.com/

Alongside the new MacBook Pro, Apple introduced a 27-inch 5K UltraFine Display made in partnership with LG, calling into question future plans for an Apple-branded display product.

While rumors have suggested Apple is working on a Thunderbolt Display replacement powered by an integrated GPU, Apple's LG partnership seems to indicate that Apple may have shelved plans to build a new display, something that's been confirmed by The Verge's Nilay Patel. According to Patel, Apple told him it is out of the standalone display business.

The last rumors about an Apple-branded display came in June of 2016 from BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski, a reliable source, so if Apple has ceased work on its own display product, it's a decision that may have been made rather recently.

In lieu of its own display, Apple is selling the aforementioned 5K display product from LG and a second LG-branded 4K display, both of which have been designed with input from Apple and optimized for Apple products. As pointed out by Jason Snell of Six Colors, the brightness and settings of the LG display can be adjusted from the Mac, suggesting a deeper level of hardware integration than you'd get with a standard 5K display.

Priced at $1,299.95, the 5K LG UltraFine display uses multi-stream transport and connects to the new MacBook Pro using a single Thunderbolt 3 cable. Because it requires Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, it's only compatible with the MacBook Pro (and any future Macs equipped with Thunderbolt 3).

LG's 21.5-inch 4K UltraFine display is more affordable at $699.95, and because it doesn't require Thunderbolt 3, it's compatible with any USB-C Mac, including the new MacBook Pro and the less powerful MacBook.

Both displays offer charging capabilities, support for wide color gamut, built-in stereo speakers, and include additional ports on the back for connecting accessories. The larger 5K display also includes a camera and a microphone, offering all of the features that might have been included in an Apple-designed display.

I already wrote this the moment they stopped selling their displays earlier this year. It's very obvious and understandable from a business point of view: there is no profit to be made here. But from a marketing point this is a big mistake. Apple is known for its beautiful design and a desk with an Apple display draws attention to their brand. Now, who cares what computer you have attached to this fugly LG monitor? Apple is moving into irrelevance, either by discontinuing their products (Pro products, server, display), not updating them (iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, iPad) or by pricing themselves out of the market (MacBook Pro and iPhone).

Yes, I'm talking about the screens/TVs quality, liked theirs better than Samsung's after comparing side by side.

Definitely. Samsung doesn't sell any TV's/panels that come close to the LG OLED's, which are undoubtedly the best TV's you can buy (at least in the states.)

I hope OLED is implemented in the next iteration of iMac's coming out...I mean with all the backlash with this recent MPB release and Microsoft coming out with their fancy looking all-in-one Surface Studio, Apple is in dire need of something unique. Alas, i'll keep my expecations low for whenever they decide to unveil it...

They would announce it though.
They stopped making monitors YEARS ago.... but didn't announce it until today.

If they announce the MacPro is dead... they won't be able to sell their existing stock.
If they remain silent on the MacPro.... nobody will buy one because they believe it's EOL.
If they had just slapped a new CPU and GPU into the existing trash can... everyone would know it has a future and buy in.

Seems pretty clear that Apple is slowly backing out of the computer marketplace.... BEEP BEEP BEEP

I'm still using my 2003 23" Apple Cinema Display as a 2nd monitor on my iMac (via 3 display port converters) but keep it around because it's quite gorgeous imho. I'm sad they're leaving this sector.

Fine, but can one company -- ANY COMPANY -- put in 5 seconds to figure out how to make these displays not so BLOODY UGLY? I mean, this $1300 LG monitor -- way to make a home look like an accountant's office.

That's what I was going to say- the smaller one would probably fit most people's needs, and connects with USB-C so you don't need a thunderbolt dongle with the new MacBook Pros, but that black plastic and square looking stand have got to go and look cheap next to the Apple products.
