Every single person who hit this should call AppleCare. Make them walk you through fixing it, even if you already did. Keep them on the phone for half an hour.

Every single call against a new product launch is a financial hit to Apple, and is counted directly against that product. This is the only quality measure that can't be ignored.

In a statement given to BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski, Apple says the issue that was causing iOS 10 updates installed over-the-air to fail on some iPads and iPhones has been resolved, making it safe to resume iOS 10 downloads.Shortly after iOS 10 was released, a number of people who attempted to install iOS 10 using an over-the-air download saw their installation fail, effectively bricking devices until plugged into iTunes for an update or restore. For people who are not near a computer or who do not own one, this is a significant problem.

Users who were already affected by the problem will need to continue on with the restore process using a computer, but new users who attempt to install the update should not run into the problem.

Apple recommends creating a backup before installing any new iOS update, and those worried about having the install fail can instead download the update through iTunes, an installation method that has not been affected.

30 years working in tech as an engineer designing and no matter how well you plan and test and remember the old issues, something new comes up. You can do after action reviews and be 100% certain you have it covered and still something else comes up.

Then, you have everything tested and tripled checked and then something else comes up out of your control...

Do we blame Apple since this happens more than once? Too many variables. I laugh when I see posts saying "same as last year" - makes me want to say - Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me... I had the beta installed so I didn't have the issue, but I would have been in the same boat - minus the continuous whining.

I can hear the execs at Samsung saying "good good... anything to get the spotlight off of us"

Good observations.

For those who ran into the brick problem, I think the best way to prevent a problem such as this affecting you is to grow ten years older, and to learn something in those ten years.

I'm pretty confident it isn't fixed after seeing initial posts I decided to hold off after seeing this post I gave it a go. I've been waiting for the update to complete for about an honor ur now.

I don't disagree regarding the importance of taking responsibility, but there are also thresholds that dictate when someone needs to be fired, etc. Again, I'd point to Forstall as an example of someone that was taken to task and let go as a result of a major failure.

Who knows, maybe an engineer or two get let go today as a result of the snafu? Does it make anyone feel better if that's the case?

If Forstall was a major fail and the current regime is ok... wow..

How does that prevent an update error? Grow up.

I wasn't passing judgement on Forstall, rather using him as a clear example of someone that was let go by Tim as a result of a major situation (Maps).

I think one app being messed up is a whole lot better than rendering devices useless for any length of time or for any reason.

Priorities, man.

This was an issue with the software update mechanism, not the version of iOS. And there's a huge difference between distributing to a controlled, known number of registered users than to the larger population around the world.
I never said it was an issue with the OS - i said it was probably an issue with the wrapper - they've done this before.

Nothing will change. This is the Cook era, not the Jobs era. At this point, you should assume devices will get bricked on launch day. Just think of it as part of the annual iPhone launch festivities.

Wow. How it pains me to keep sticking up for TC today and remining people of Apple's faults during Job's tenure... but maybe you remember that OS X update that wiped external FW harddrives clean on install? This stuff can happen no matter who is in charge. And honestly, why rush to update when we all know there is going to be a glich?

Pro's who depend on their devices understand you never update a work machine as soon as the update is avaiable -- some even wait until the first or second point update. They are in no huge rush to send friends stickers, just to make dollars.

Some iDevices bricked, problem solved in one hour ---> OUTRAGE!

People almost killed, cars, garages, hotel rooms and kids burned, US banning the device ---> *shrug*

Not directed at you, but I love the Steve Jobs references. I remember how much he didn't want to take the blame for antenna gate. You are holding it wrong or just avoid holding it that way... people praise Steve way too much and most is deserved, but saying this wouldn't happen under Steve or he would take the blame is so wrong.

I'm currently trying to update my 9.7" iPad Pro through the new iTunes. The download keeps stalling. But within an hour or two, I'll hopefully be safely updated.

. . . . .

Funny how Apple can't do anything right, even when they acknowledge and fix a problem.

Yep, for some of us, we remember when the bar for Apple was higher and are disappointed that it has sagged so low. For others, with no reference point, Apple's current behavior seems fine. As to Samsung, no one really has ever had a high bar there, so anything is better than nothing. It is not really hard to understand.

I hate to be that person, but Apple needs to say that X software comes out at 9am on a given date. So NZ, Aus, etc start downloading earlier than other contries so slowly across the day the obvious huge amounts of downloads are spread out over the day, which is less stress on the servers. Some of the faults with the download not working is probably down to the file not downloading 100% correctly, probably due to huge download traffic off the server.
There are many simple solutions that would allow Apple to ease the strain on the servers, from releasing the update in different regions rather than all at once, to creating some kind of queue system.

What is the gold masters release of this? As I am unable to get apple's servers to communicate with me to get the latest GM release, the version I have installed currently is; 10.0.1 (14A403) and it says it's the latest update... although I've had this on my phone for the last few weeks so I doubtful it's up to date..
I have the GM and it is the same as you. We are good.
