Tens of millions devices upgraded simultaneously,

Yeah, Apple should have made us all apply for specific download times and then this wouldn't have happened.

Never a shortage of humour on the MR threads.

I also think it is short term memory for people who praise Steve so much. Failures like Lisa, Mac TV, Apple III, G4 Cube. Steve is brilliant, but he flopped many times and blamed everyone but himself for every issue and every problem. Even when it was his fault completely. He never wanted to say sorry or take the blame. My gawd, he dragged the mother of his child through the mud over DNA matching him.

He tried to sell Pixar just to get out of the company for $50 mm but no one would buy it. He didn't want it. Later it sold for $7bb. He is not always right. We love him, but he screwed up and would blame this glitch on everyone but him. That's not a leader.

Not talking about Steve, because I never knew him. But I do know that "It just works", was mostly right at one time, not perfect, but right enough that I did not worry about how my macs would work after an update. My macs were open to install anything and I had all kinds of wonky non-Apple software on them and they just worked. Now we have closed system that routinely has all kinds of problems. Years ago, I recommended to family, just install the update, now I recommend waiting for 2 or 3 point releases for each major release.

There is no way tens of millions of devices upgraded simultaneously in the first hour. I'd be surprised if it were over 100k devices, or even 10k devices.

There's a BILLION iPhones sold, plus hundreds of millions of iPads.

Tens of millions among them were waiting with the finger on the button. Apple's scale is so staggering, that it's almost a miracle everything works at all.

There is great entertainment every September. Love the whining, the apple apologists, brilliant ideas, simple solutions (sarcasm), people wanting to be first to get their hands on the new iPhone, people wanting to install the new OS as soon as its live. September is a great month.
That's why it's got a song.

But that billion means nothing, plenty of phones are now dead, any older than iPhone 5 and older iPads are not getting iOS 10, plenty of people are asleep or in work and some will choose not to update right now or ever, so it's not as high as you are making it look.

It's still one of the biggest downloads and updates every year of course, but people who accept stuff like this are really part of the problem, and the rest is how the world works which is not right either but there it is.

Problem wasn't solved in an hour for those who did the update before Apple corrected the OTA issue.

There's an old expression - a recession is when your neighbor loses his job, a depression is when you lose yours. In other words, a little empathy wouldn't hurt those who are throwing daggers at the ones affected by the issue.

There is also the expression, don't update in the first hours, especially without a backup, unless you don't mind losing your device and all that's on it. That goes for any major software update from any vendor, even those from Apple.
Yet, people keep doing it.

I can't believe the number of people who keep updating in the first hour when they could have waited 1 day and avoided all that. The first hours of the big release is a "Beta" in itself as your testing wide deployment for the first time where you get bugs that rarely occur in Beta.

There are supposedly 1B IOS devices as of 6 months ago (more now) (which includes Ipads, Ipods, AppleTV and Apple Watch). Apple was selling a lot less devices in the early years, most devices have been sold in the last 3-4 years.

Brief issue my butt! I was looking forward to this update since it was announced early summer. I wish I would not have actually updated my phone. Here I am 3-4 hours removed from the initial install and I've had nothing but problems. These problems are typically android/samsung problems but not this year. I got rid of my macbook pro during the spring in hopes of either getting an updated version, or an ipad pro. Since I do not have a computer, I had to borrow a friend's pc to download itunes, and attempt numerous times to update my phone. I am still trying after this long. I spoke with apple care/ two representatives for a combined hour and a half and although their hearts were in the right place... the troubleshooting was something that you would propose to a novice. like unplug and change cords, restart, factory reset. If I could factory reset don't you think that I would?
I've had it in regards to this iphone 6s plus! In fact I did not want the phone. Sprint bullied me by using unfair practices when they were changing from the 2 year contract (which is what I purchased the iphone 6 on originally, paid $300) to their sorry "its not a contract, lease contract." After the first year of my contract they decided to charge me an additional $50 a month for the second year of my contract until it was up. That is an extra $50 per month just to have my iphone 6. So they pushed me into a lease with the 6s plus which was $15 cheaper per month, but has given me nothing but problems since. Dropped calls, stall outs on wifi and the normal network. Even their solutions were basic, restart your phone, factory reset it, we'll reset the network... I average at the very least one major problem with this phone each month since march 2016. A bitter taste has been left in my mouth by both companies at this current moment, my phone is still not working...

In a statement given to BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski, Apple says the issue that was causing iOS 10 updates installed over-the-air to fail on some iPads and iPhones has been resolved, making it safe to resume iOS 10 downloads.Shortly after iOS 10 was released, a number of people who attempted to install iOS 10 using an over-the-air download saw their installation fail, effectively bricking devices until plugged into iTunes for an update or restore. For people who are not near a computer or who do not own one, this is a significant problem.

Users who were already affected by the problem will need to continue on with the restore process using a computer, but new users who attempt to install the update should not run into the problem.

Apple recommends creating a backup before installing any new iOS update, and those worried about having the install fail can instead download the update through iTunes, an installation method that has not been affected.

You could have waited a day. There often issues in the first hours; not just this year.
As for your false equivalency and rant... Yeah right.

When Apple released iOS 10 for download DID a message pop-up telling downloaders to hold off for a day? you know just in case? or were we all to assume the download was dirty at the outset?

As far as I'm aware Apple doesn't send push notifications encouraging people to upgrade their iPhones for the first day or two. You have to go looking for it in settings.

So yes, customers are to blame for rushing out to upgrade.

This is technology. Sometimes bad things happen.

Almost every update these days has something trivial, suggesting that they haven't even tried it. Just let a few people test each build prior to inviting the general public, even if you are absolutely sure that the build is correct. Bricking every iPad Pro and iPhone 6S is brutal. Even much smaller companies than Apple perform basic smoke tests before public release.

Home now but iTunes is jammed and can't push the Update download. So I'm still locked out. But interestingly I'm still getting iMessage on my Apple Watch. And I can answer by dictation which I kind of thought was something Watch did by sending audio to my iPhone. Interesting.

And no real worries being without my iPhone for a few hours. I know that downloading the initial update has a bit of risk associated with it. But I have other devices and other phones. I really just wanted to update to iOS 10 so I could do update to Watch OS 3. That is what I'm really curious about. Hopefully iTunes will unclog at some point tonight and I can do the update to the phone and get it unblocked. If not, I can do the restore. But would like to avoid that as it will take quite some time to restore I suppose.

Don't get me wrong, Craig F. is a great presenter and has awesome hair, but as head of software, his QA is terrible. Scott Forstall was boring and iOS 6 was a dud (feature-wise) but he produced very stable iOS releases.
Man, it's like people like you truly have no desire to actually think before you speak. Go learn the number of iPhones there were back then around the iPhone 4. Look at how many iOS devices there were. Then, look at how many iPhones and iOS devices there are now. It's a hell of a lot easier to "produce very stable iOS releases" when you aren't dealing with an absurd amount of devices. Did that honestly not cross your mind even once before posting that? Not once?! Lol

I have a iPhone 6 plus 128 and the update went fine, but the then the phone froze. I restarted and it has been on the apple sign for a couple of hours. ugh

I just came to see how many little girls were still whining over a FIXED issue... This is more staggering than a one hour update minor glitch

There are millions of downloads of a major iOS release in the first hour.

I hate to be that person, but Apple needs to say that X software comes out at 9am on a given date. So NZ, Aus, etc start downloading earlier than other contries so slowly across the day the obvious huge amounts of downloads are spread out over the day, which is less stress on the servers. Some of the faults with the download not working is probably down to the file not downloading 100% correctly, probably due to huge download traffic off the server.

Apple's CDN is one of the biggest in the world, and of course it is global.

Yeah they used Wednesday September 7th as their BIG push notification. Yep, after Tim gave us another how great iMessage is going to be with ALL those stickers in the store HE thentold everyone that iOS 10 would be available for download on the 13th and every news outlet printed the story. But try again.

Well said.

Anyone with a business background knows that the person at the top needs to take responsibility for putting the right people in the right places below to bring about success in any endeavor. This is business. There is no room for people who drop the ball repeatedly. You can give them a few chances, but at some point you have to stop, regroup, and find someone who can complete the task to the standard required.

Could Apple find someone who is better equipped to put the right people in the right places? Sure. They had one at one time.
I do agree with you to a point, really is when you do download a new version of IOS there is the possibility of something going wrong and if you rely so much on your phone you should wait to download it until after you backup your phone and can restore it if something goes wrong. All that being said Apple does seem to have a lot of issues with updates the last couple of years and should take extra precautions to make sure that when they push the update thru it does work and not cause people to have to restore from backup. All in all I think they do a pretty good job with the amount of traffic that goes thru their servers, perfect no but pretty good.
