I wonder how many are buying now because they want to continue having an Intel Mac for boot camp and legacy applications?

Probably a small contingent. I'm boot camping to play PC games, so I cannot update anymore.

Might be a larger number than you think. Around here the AS threads are filled with posts about needing bootcamp or virtualization for some specialized windows app or as @1rottenapple mentioned gaming. If the 16" didn't have widely reported issues with external monitors I'd buy one today to get rid of my dumpster fire 2017 with 3 keyboard replacements plus having an intel to ride out for a few years with bootcamp.

There were no failure complaints with the older keyboard that I remember. I'm typing this on a 2012 Retina 15, and the keyboard is great. In fact, I just got rid of two c2d MBPs (one a 17"), and their keyboards were fine. A small number of failures with the scissor mechanism is a lot more than basically no failures for the older mechanism.

I can Google some failures. https://apple.stackexchange.com/que...d-keys-q-w-e-r-t-y-u-i-o-working-sporadically

I'm typing on my 2018 MacBook Pro fine and never had an issue. That doesn't mean it's working perfectly for everyone. My personal experience and your personal experience doesn't represent everyone's experiences.

Only hard data we have is from Apple: "Apple has determined that a small percentage of the keyboards in certain MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors:".

I believe the reaction is overblown to the "small percentage".

i never said it had 0 problems. it affected a small number like you. the reaction is widely overblown given the small number.

and where's your hard info that shows millions of people were affected? i'll be waiting for that data.

And where is your hard info that shows only a small number were affected.... I'll wait but won't hold my breath.

I deleted Mission Control from the TouchBar on my MBP because Mission Control is accessible via a swipe up with three fingers on the trackpad. Check it out on System Preferences ---> Trackpad ---> More Gestures.

not a good replacement. how do you do mission control while dragging a file?

my typical use case is: show desktop -> drag a file from Desktop -> mission control -> drop into Slack or Finder window.

I replaced mine in December because of keyboard issues. Not sure why you think users have to be on this forum to know their keyboards kept failing and that Apple finally threw out the defective design and went back to the industry standard that worked for 20 years. Its a very well known issue among Mac users that use them in a professional capacity.

Of course, Covid and working from home has been a major driver of computer sales across the board with all vendors.
If you don't know then that means you didn't read my post. I never said they had to be on forums to know their keyboards are failing. I said the surge in sales didn't have anything to do with Apple dumping the butterfly keyboards. The only way to know if the issue was widespread enough to deter sales is to frequent forums, which do their damndest to influence people. It's beyond me how you completely changed what I said. 🙄

Haven't gone back to re-read it, I had read your comment as saying only people hanging out in forums were buying new machines due to keyboards, maybe i misread

I didn't state that either. Why would you even reply to a post you didn't read? Nothing you've "quoted" me saying is correct. Please move on to another member and properly read posts before calling someone out?

Um, yeah - ya think? I held off for years upgrading until they did away with the **** keyboard. I've been happy with my 2020 MBP, but will probably switch to an ARM Mac when they're released as long as the price is reasonable.

Yeah, I know I bought a 16” MBP because I was working from home. Was tired of being stuck in my studio all the time on my 5K iMac and needed to get some fresh air and sunlight.

Did you try CMD C to copy files, then CMD OPTION V to move them? No need to drag them. Just curious! I'm not saying it's better! 👍

The only reason they are selling more Macbooks Pros, is because they fix the Keyboard!
for 4 years many users were holding off to buy a laptop just because of that.
I am still waiting for Apple to make the RAM user upgradable. Still think it is a joke that we cannot upgrade the RAM ina $2400 Macbook so called "Pro".
Still Apple makes you pay obscene RAM upgrade prices At least 100% more than market value.
And still there was no major design innovation in the past 4 years.

Like many others have written here already I was ready to buy a MacBook Pro as soon as they fixed those keyboards. They finally did with the introduction of the 16" MacBook Pro and I pulled the trigger. No regrets, great machine.

That doesn't always work from my experience.

For example, goto images.google.com. How do you CMD OPTION V to paste in the image file to do a reverse image search?
I generally just drag and drop the screenshot onto the "Choose File" button and it automatically uploads

And sometimes requires *slightly* more work. For example if you have Photos.app open and want to import a file to a particular album. Doing it the CMD C is as follows (From Photos.app):
1. Show Desktop (via five finger "expand" swipe)
2. Click on the file
3. CMD C
4. Show Photos again (via five finger "shrink" swipe)
5. Click on particular album
6. CMD V

Doing it the dragging way is as follows (From Photos.app):
1. CMD + Mission Control (show desktop)
2. Click and hold file
3. CMD + Mission Control (show Photos again)
4. Drop onto particular album

I know it's just couple of steps less, but every little time shaved off helps.

30% and repeated failures after it is “fixed” is not overblown. You’re simply in denial.

Well yeah, release a MacBook with the latest gen processor and a keyboard that doesn’t suck for a change and surprise surprise: people will buy them.

I picked up an 11th gen 2020 MBP with 16GB memory and 512GB for 1300 as an open box during a sale at Best Buy. You don’t realize how much those butterfly keyboards suck until you perform the same tasks on a proper scissor keyboard with actual travel and tactile response.
I have no interest in a MacBook that can’t run boot camp, so this thing ought to keep me good for at least another 5 years until the ARM platform matures to the point of practicality.

Yeah, this is absolutely incorrect. Nice try though.
More and more posters in this thread seem to think that the change over to the scissor keyboard was part of their decision to buy.

If the 16" didn't have external monitor issues you could add me to the list of people that would buy today mostly because of the keyboard, not the only reason but a major one.

Genuinely surprises me it isn't the 2020 Air.

I think the fixed keyboard and $999 / 256gb SSD base ( I know, more would be nice but this is apple and 256gb imo is serviceable, 128gb is junk) is very compelling for the average consumer in need of a new laptop

I still have my 2016 NTB Pro and I appreciate the thinned tapered design over it.
I'm guessing much higher margins on MBP, and a lot of corporate purchases.

What is an NTB?

Well you can keep clenching your little fists and stomping your little feet but more and more posters in this thread seem to think that the change over to the scissor keyboard was part of their decision to buy.

Claiming it is not a reason for buying a recent MacBook is as stupid as saying it is the only reason.
Fill the rest of us in the external monitor problem. I have a 2020 16” that I use with the 27” Thunderbolt Display and the 24” Cinema Display and do not have any problems. I use them both together for a 2 display setup. I don’t use the MBP’s display while working at my desk Though I have and it works too.
