Comparing the old to new, I still have an iPad 2 and you can just tell by handling it that it's built more tough compared to the newer ones. The new ones will flex with a bit of pressure applied but the older iPad doesn't give at all. Of course they will both bend at a certain point, but there's no doubt the older one takes more force to do so. I don't think anyone is saying that the iPad is the only device that will bend, it's the threshold at which it does that is in question. There is no question in my mind that the newer devices are more fragile than the older ones.

I don't usually link to videos on YouTube, but this one does show the difference between the new and the old.

Looking at that video, I am confused, I thought the new iPad Pro was supposed to have and edge to edge display,m yet I clearly see bezels on all sides.

That being said, this expensive of a device should never be sent out bent, that is completely inexcusable, as is the fact that it bends more easily than previous models.

No, the new iPads are not edge to edge. The bezels are a bit smaller than the previous gen, but they are still there.

The video is stupid even for bending videos, and designed around a preset narrative. Making jokes about the headphone jack (why am I not surprised), the “perhaps build them better next time” comment - this is a classic clickbaity, unoriginal Apple-bashing video that tells us nothing and attracts people who either have no interest in Apple devices or find them too expensive. That’s it.

And even the comparison is stupid. Of course the first one, which is twice as thick, a lot heavier and has a smaller surface will bend harder. The question is - will this iPad bend under regular usage? (and of course, everyone is a structural expert all of a sudden so they know it will). Anyway, are these iPads built well and will they stand wear & tear from normal usage, over time? If you do want to compare them, at least compare them to other iPad Pros and under regular usage scenarios (put them in a tight bag, for example). The best test will be time itself, once this non-controversy dies down, we’ll see how many iPad Pros actually bent.

Until then, this is just people venting their frustration, that is all.

You mean things, shall get weaker if lighter and smaller?
Like titanium spoons or fiber glass. Oh wait all this stuff is lighter and more durable

Mhhh ... i think i missed something, please tell me!

I just thought of something... who in their right mind, especially after this, would ever trust Apple with their life by buying one of their rumored self-driving cars? Can you imagine the same lackadaisical attitude towards the build quality of a car?.

I think you’re being a bit dramatic in the sense of comparing a minuscule bend in an iPad to comparing an ‘Apple car’ that may never exist. You seem like you’re under the notion Apple should be perfect, they’re not, no need make it seem like they lost the ability to manufacturer a tech product anymore.

He has made it abundantly clear that he cares more about using his position of power to further his own personal agenda, rather than actually making Apple a better company towards its customers. He apparently thinks that everyone who buys Apple devices should live within the same silicon valley frame of mind that he does. He talks about how important encryption is to freedom, yet is all on board with censorship and stifling voices of those he feels people shouldn't be listening to. He is a hypocrite and a fraud.

What personal agenda would that be?

Oh I completely agree. Tim Cook is more concerned with everything other then running Apple. The contrast of him versus his predecessor is shocking. Steve Jobs was totally focused on product and customer experience. Tim Cook is more concerned with being a SJW and worrying about everything outside of his control then being concerned with what he can actually control. If it were any other company he would have been gone long ago. Apple is strong enough it has for the most part withstood a weak and leadership lacking CEO.

How so? I've been an Apple guy since 2002 and don't remember this many people being pissed and this many lackluster products under Steve.

Under Steve we got:
  • Imac
  • iLamp Imac
  • iPod
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Mac Mini
  • Best of breed laptops (Macbook Pro, Macbook Air)
  • Downloaded Music and Movies
There were a fair bit of flops too (Motorola ROKR, iPod HiFi, etc) but all in all Steve brought us new stuff we wanted. Tim brought us crap we don't want or need (Touchbar, bad keyboards, few updates on Macs, bent iPads, Beats, etc).

I still have my doubts Tim is the right guy. He may know supply chains but he sure as hell doesn't know technology or how to move the ball forward.

On the products that you mentioned, TC was the SVP that those products could be profitably made. Now, as CEO, his track record is a little less stellar. However, in 2011, the year of SJs death, total iPhone sales for the year were 72.3M. Unit sales in 2018 were 217M. Managing that kind of growth while maintaining relatively good quality is not easy.

As someone involved in corporate messaging, Apple's statement is almost messaging malpractice. Its basic point, that this is a side-effect of something happening in the manufacturing process and *will not under normal circumstances get worse*, is fine. That answers exactly the question many people have: is the iPad Pro more easily bendable than other devices. But the statement that this is "normal" and the focus on so-called practicality over aesthetics is unnecessary, cheap, and in severe tension with the very image Apple has long cultivated.

What Apple could have stressed instead was that if any users are troubled by this, they will see it immediately and can exchange or return their device with ease. That actually is Apple's policy, so the weirdly defensive statement about what is "normal" adds nothing while pointlessly (and possibly severely) damaging Apple's reputation.

Thanks for your opinion. I stand by my comment.

You actually posed two hypothetical questions, both of which are unrealistic. Again, you’re logic doesn’t apply to something that doesn’t exist.

Who would ever trust Apple with their life by buying one of their rumored self-driving cars? Can you imagine the same lackadaisical attitude towards the build quality of a car?.

Apple doesn’t “cut orders” for iPhone publicly, so you’re just speculating along with everyone else.

If you haven’t noticed, the entire market is in free fall.

Looked at NVDA, AMZN, GOOGL, FB, NFLX, TWTR, AMD, etc?

Not one official number or word has come out of Apple to the negative, but fear in markets drive stocks in the short term.

The last numbers we heard from Apple sported 20% revenue growth and 41% EPS growth. But you don’t deal in facts, right? Much more fun to speculate and doom and gloom.
Are you tired of winning yet?

Clearly the end of the world with you with all the comments trying to persuade people’s opinipns which are way justified over this matter than your own lol. I rest my case, as an apple sheep and one that doesn’t “put apple on blast over anything” I think a good crack in the face would wake you up to reality and if I could I’d be more than welcome to do it.

All I have done is respond to those who have quoted me. I made my points and stand by them. And yes, it is realistic that there are problems with devices. It happens all the time, but not with every device. I owned the 10.5, no white spot. I own the iPad Pro 11, no bend. That points to a manufacturing defect with a small batch of iPad's. Clearly not the end of the world. Haha I think you need to get off your high horse a bit. If you don't like their products, don't buy it, you have every right to that - but to say it's junk is just naive. Manufacturing defects have been going on for years and it has happened under your savior Steve Job's watch as well. Again, deep breaths - it's not the end of the world.

What I would like to see/read, is a _real_ (Not a Macrumors member guess) engineer that understands this type of manufacturing, and if they could comment specifically if this seems accurate to what Apple is describing reference the bending in the aluminum, And is it considered ‘Normal.’

My spouse is an actual mechanical engineer (university degrees in applied sciences) with more than a decade in industrial manufacturing. I inquired about the comments Apple made and received the following response:
  • There are a lot of factors that can contribute to this result (bent chassis).
  • Materials are a factor and certainly Apple could experiment with alloys that would not exhibit this issue; however,
  • The manufacturing process can also often be altered to mitigate bending (i.e. Apple is probably telling the truth in that the bending occurs during cooling, but it's not like the process couldn't be tweaked or additional steps added to ensure the part is flat by the end of the process).
At the end of the day the answer is: Yes this can happen during manufacturing but there is literally no excuse that it should happen; it's the type of thing that can be addressed.

I’m trying to understand your point, but you’re not making a ton of sense. People can think what they want, but I have no issue bringing some common sense to the forums. Apple is clearly wrong here, but it’s not a huge deal like you’re making it out to be. Once you’re able to grow up and realize that, the better off you’ll be. I know Apple wronged you, but hitting me in the face isn’t going to make your life any better.

If they consider it normal then they absolutely can deny a return. You’ve got the logic in reverse.
You can take any Apple product back within a certain number of days.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath. Wishing to crack someone in the face crosses a line. Apple is clearly wrong here but lets keep things in perspective. The world is not ending, life as we know it, is not ending.

I didn't expect anything different from a company that it isn't even capable of testing their own products for flaws like these:

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-headphone-adapter-wifi-interference.2155178/

I hope more and more people become aware of how they have been scammed over the years

Apple cripples their own hardware/OS on purpose, locks their own devices and then sells for ridiculous prices

And now more users are seeing their dirty tactics

Cost cutting and letting their greed (32% price increases) bury their quality control department

This company is going down and it's going down HARD

Totally not the point.
You may have a good one. @Sevanw stated it fairly well. #1034

So in other words, on a thread about iPads, you have only opinion and no actual iPad. Cool. Did I say I had one? I’ve owned 8. No problems. The fact is not that I had a good one, but that a few got a bad one. Totally normal
