These laptops are capable of being useful beyond 4 years. My 2011 is pulling home server duty. If something is going to breakdown in them, it shouldn’t be the damn keyboard.
Exactly. The only thing that doesn't work well on my 2012 cMBP is the ethernet port- it cuts in and out. Understandable, in my opinion. The keyboard works as flawlessly now as it did when I got it six years ago, as it should.

Err, MacRumors you've been around for a few years - you know full well that's exactly the kind of thing Apple does. GPU failures with MacBooks for example - yep, replaced with exactly the same mainboard that suffered the exact same fault several years later.

Your sentence is utterly wrong and misleading.

to be fair: “It wouldn’t really make sense” is accurate by MacRumors. Replacing with the same defect part doesn’t make sense.

Ugh.. After 30 years of owning Apple devices I am really starting to hate Apple... If I only knew they were going to launch these models... but I just got a MacBook Pro 2017 from an online retailer four weeks ago and now I am not elegible for an exchange!
Always check the macrumors buyers guide ;). MacBook Pros were overdue for an update. Even though this update came without warning, it was not a surprise by any means.

Why would you buy a laptop that’s 400 days old? You are on a rumors website... they have been talking about updated MacBooks coming for months.

"Hopefully, in that case, it means that Apple has quietly tweaked the second-generation keyboard to be more reliable. It wouldn't really make sense, and wouldn't feel very Apple, for them to continue using replacement keyboards that are just as prone to break as the ones they are replacing.""

MacRumors should indeed know better: this is precisely what Apple has done, over and over again. Apple did exactly that with my 2008 MBP with the GeForce 8600M defect. There are multiple accounts of the replacement board failing 2 and even times.

Is everybody forgetting about the multiple accounts of the butterfly keyboard replacement failing 2 and 3 and 4 times?

Just when there was a glimmer of hope here for those already with a screwed machine..

Bleh..

Apple - Do the proper recall and let people who paid hand over fist for the 2016-2017 models get made whole with a 2018 model if they'd like.

I bought my macbook pro 2017 13 inch(No touch bar) from best buy in Jan of this year..I think it would be fair for apple to at least offer some kind of upgrade option for us who have the keyboard issue..at least do something for us, maybe not do a swap for free Id be willing to add a little difference, something to rectify the situation

noTB people are SOL I would expect since I don't think they even make 3rd gen KB's on the side for repair purposes.

I'm one of those people too, 2016 nTB.

I have a 2017 with TB and I am of the same mind. I would be willing to pay a bit to get the new one, but I doubt that will be an option.

I wouldnt mind paying a few hundred dollars for an upgrade, that is fine by me..but seeing best buy trade in quote me 332 for my trade in which is by the way in PERFECT shape, you cant even tell it was ever used..is RIDICULOUS

Oh, that is TERRIBLE. I always sell my computer on Craigslist or the local equivalent, which usually returns much more. I got my 2017 with AppleCare planning on using it through grad school, so hopefully I don’t need to ship it off to be fixed often and it still has some resale when I am in a place to upgrade again.

Last year I broke my 2014 Alienware 17” 1080p with a gtx 980m and 32 gb ram 1tb ssd top of the line model at the time cost me $2900 $3300 after the warranty because i was playing around with my son while I was editing a video completely my fault I had dells 3 year extending warranty I call dell they set up a RMA send my laptop in 2 weeks later I get the brand new 2017 model with 4K display gtx 1080 1tb ssd and 32gb ddr4 ram better in every possible way and I didn’t have to pay a dime....

I bought a 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar max spec that year it came out cost me $3300 after apple care that year because my company started migrating to Mac and thought it would be easy, a little over a year in 7 keys completely stopped working I had apple care warranty I sent in for repair took them 1 month to fix I got the exact same machine back and 1 week later all 7 of the keys that we’re broken defected back to how it was when I sent it in... $2799 computers with a $350 warranty and it took them a month just to air compress my keyboard they took me for an Idiot and didn’t even replace it. I never have and never will buy another apple computer after that

If that was the case then maybe, but I haven’t seen any evidence that there are higher rates of failures on these keyboards than on other versions.

My work's IT says it is. They're supporting a few thousand Macs and said that the keyboard replacement percentage currently sits at low teens. Due to this and the overall expense vs Dell computers, they no longer allow Mac purchases and dropped Mac support. Company size of 40K+ but about 30k are factory related which leaves 10k that are office professionals (programmers, engineers, hr, media & graphics, sales, management and other general business employees).

Take a look at Apple’s trade-in quote. Almost $800 for my 2015 15”

https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in

Private sale would likely maximize your return, but has its own challenges.

I have mine on Craigslist too, someone offered me yesterday 800 bucks for it(I have it for 1100) I guess considering I bought the laptop for 1150 at best buy(Sale plus student coupon discount) I guess its Ok but will still wait to see what Apple does..would be a real shame if I sell the macbook then find out after wards Apple would have given me more for it

Apple trade in unfortunately does NOT include the 2017 models

Took my Late 2016 15" MBP in today for the keyboard issue.

Signed a Work Authorization for $895, fully covered by the Service Program, for what was described as "Replace Top Case." The Genius Bar associate said to expect the entire keyboard, touchbar, trackpad and metal casing for the non-display part of the MBP to be replaced. I am thinking they are replacing with the new generation keyboard. Will report back later this week when I receive it back. Got shipped out tonight.
