I wonder if any Beta testers out there can guesstimate which issue(s) are the big hold up in Stage Manager or elsewhere? I for one want a the most stable, official, release possible. If Apple hamstrings my M1 iPadPro under the new release I guess I'll have to buy the M2 iPad ;)

I think it was Gurman that first broke the story weeks ago. I guess he still has his connections.

EDIT:

Here we go.

Apple Inc. expects to delay its next major iPad software update by about a month, taking the unusual step of not releasing it at the same time as the new iPhone software, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

For the last several years, the tech giant has released major iPad and iPhone software updates, known as iPadOS and iOS, at the same time in September. This time around, Apple plans to put out iOS 16 during the usual period but not launch iPadOS 16 until October, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private.

For me as an 12,9 M1 user The update is huge, it is an completly different device now with stage manager And the better display scaling.

will 16.1 be seeded als an different update? I only see a new version of 16.0

Ok, maybe I’m dumb, but what does “the ability to resurface the Stage Manager side rail with a gesture while the feature is full screen” mean and why is it considered a “big update”?

This whole iOS/iPadOS thing is confusing. I thought with the iPod Touch gone that Apple would go back to calling it iPhoneOS. iOS made sense when there was one OS for all their mobile devices, but not so much anymore.

What is showing on Apple releases
  • iOS 16 beta 7 (20A5356a) - August 23, 2022
  • iPadOS 16 beta 7 (20B5027f) - August 23, 2022. S/B iPadOS 16.1 after its installed
  • watchOS 9 beta 7 (20R5359a) - August 23, 2022
  • tvOS 16 beta 7 (20J5371a) - August 23, 2022

iPadOS 16.1 comes with Safari 16.1. I would expect iPadOS 16.1 and iOS 16.1 to be released at the same time in October with the same build number.

The today's Xcode release doesn't come with a new macOS SDK, which, to me indicates that there won't be a new macOS Ventura beta this week as well. Although less likely, I won't be surprised if the official release is 13.1, instead of 13.

Very few journalists & websites hold Apple accountable when it underdelivers.

iPad OS & even MacOS in my opinion have been lagging in development lately with few features that are mostly focused on security-related matters and nothing meeting conudmers demand on UI & functions.

Even the Stage Manager in my opinion is a joke compared to the basic yet functional windows management on Win-11.

Add to it: no notification syncing, delayed iPad OS features coming 1 year after iOS and you see the whole picture is just not what you would expect from Apple.

I'm really hoping we see MacOS beta 6 tomorrow Wednesday. Between powerd and mds_stores occasionally hogging CPU beta 6 needs to come up for some air and be seen.

As if iOS 16 is going to be released bug free…😄

I'm staying away from any of these until the second or third point update.

Na, macOS is always about a month behind.
It’s been this way since 2013.
There was also a three week gap between Monterey beta five and beta six, and yet it’s still launched with 12.0

Apple has again painted themselves into a corner with their operating system updates. Delays don't inspire confidence. On the other hand I'd rather it be fully baked before it's released than 1/2 baked & buggy, so there's that. I'm still advocating for Apple shifting its major OS upgrades to at least an every other year time schedule.

A little sad to say I agree. Some of the new features are solutions looking for problems, rather than real "I didn't even know I wanted that!" features that used to be so innovative and fun.

I’ve gone back and forth with Stage Manager. It’s neat and I can see those who use their iPad with an external display will really benefit, but for those with 2018/2020 iPad Pros, rest assured, you’re NOT missing much with iPadOS 16.
I’ve been trying to hold back my desires to upgrade to an M1 just to test Stage Manager. Side-by-side does the job for me, but I can’t help but be interested in SM. I have to say though, from the videos I’ve seen on YouTube, SM’s overlapping windows kinda looks messy which might drive me nuts.

“This is an especially big year for iPadOS. As its own platform with features specifically designed for iPad, we have the flexibility now to delay iPadOS features, especially from iPhone. Home Screen widgets & App Library on iPhone? Nope, next year!”
